Canberra Raiders 2010s Team of the Decade: Coach

It has been 10 years since The Greenhouse voted on the Canberra Raiders Team of the Decade - for the 2000s. Back in 2009, Neil Henry was selected as the coach the Canberra Raiders Team of the 2000s. Now it is time to vote on the coach of the Team of the 2010s!

There were two substantive head coaches in the 2010s and they are the nominees:

David Furner

David Furner made 200 appearances as a player for the Canberra Raiders (1992-2000), playing in one Grand Final and winning the Clive Churchill Medal and a premiership in 1994. He played two Tests for Australia and made 11 appearances for New South Wales. Furner also played for Wigan (2001-02) and Leeds (2003-04) in England. He played in a losing Super League Grand Final (2001) and a winning Challenge Cup Final (2002) with Wigan. He also played in a losing Challenge Cup Final (2003) and a winning Super League Grand Final (2004) with Leeds. Furner then returned to Australia to become an assistant coach with the Canberra Raiders, taking over from Neil Henry as head coach in 2009.

Furner coached the Raiders for five seasons, for a 44 per cent win rate. He took the club to two finals campaigns (2010, 2012), making four finals appearances for a 2-2 record. In 2010, the Raiders won in week one of the finals against the Panthers, before being eliminated in a semi final against the Tigers. The club also won a qualifying final in 2012 against the Sharks, but was eliminated the following week against the Rabbitohs. The Raiders missed the finals in his other three seasons as head coach, narrowly missing the wooden spoon in 2011. Furner was sacked three rounds before the end of the 2013 season. Andrew Dunemann took over as interim coach for the final games of 2013 - all losses. In the 2010s, Furner had a 45 per cent win rate.

Furner was appointed an assistant coach with Cowboys in 2013, and was with that club in 2015 when the Cowboys won their first premiership. He joined the South Sydney Rabbitohs as an assistant in 2017. He took over as head coach of English Super League club Leeds in 2019, but he and the club parted ways after 14 games. He will be the Newcastle Knights assistant coach in 2020. He has also been an assistant with the Kangaroos.

Ricky Stuart

Ricky Stuart played 203 games for the Canberra Raiders, including four Grand Finals. He was a member of the 1989, 1990 and 1994 premiership winning teams. He played nine Tests for Australia and made 14 appearances for New South Wales. He won the Clive Churchill Medal in 1990 and was named the Dally M Halfback of the Year that season. In 1993, he won the Dally M Medal, was Dally M Halfback of the Year and also won the Rothman’s Medal for Best and Fairest. Stuart went on to play 40 games with the Canterbury Bulldogs in 1999-2000.

Stuart has coached Australia (14 Tests, 2006-08), New South Wales (nine Origins, 2005, 2011-12) and New South Wales Country. He has coached three other NRL clubs, the Sydney Roosters (2002-06), the Cronulla Sharks (2007-10) and the Parramatta Eels (2013) - before taking over from David Furner as head coach of the Raiders in 2014. He won a premiership with the Roosters in 2002, his first season as a head coach. He also coached the Roosters to two other Grand Finals (2003-04), both losses. He parted with the Roosters after the club finished outside the finals in 2005-06 - but finished with a 62 per cent win rate overall. He took the Sharks to a Preliminary Final in 2008, but missed the finals in his other three seasons as Cronulla coach (42 per cent win rate). He resigned six weeks before the end of the 2010 season. Stuart spent one season with the struggling Eels in 2013 (21 per cent win rate), but took up an option to leave his three year contract early to join the Raiders.

The Raiders missed the finals in Stuart’s first three years as head coach, but in 2016 took the club to its first Preliminary Final since 1997 - and the first since 1995 in a full competition. Despite some high expectations, the club again failed to make the finals in 2017 and 2018 - with 2018 disrupted by key injuries and suspension. In 2019, Stuart coached Canberra to its first Grand Final since 1994, ultimately losing narrowly to the Roosters in a controversial match. He has had six finals appearances as coach of the Raiders, winning three. He has a 49 per cent win rate in his six seasons so far as Canberra coach. Overall he has a 50 per cent win rate as an NRL coach.

Pretty tight one.
Dave Turner 44% and 50% in finals
Ricky Stuart 49% and 50% in finals

Stick's recruitment pulling power gets him across the line but Dave did pretty well with the dealt hand.

Good one Brew. Weren't you offering to drive Ricky out of town after 2017/18 after blowing smoke up his **** when he signed?

Canberra Raiders 2010s Team of the Decade: Coach

Considering Brew spent the majority of 2019 saying the team wasn’t very good and didn’t stand a chance it’s pretty amazing to see him pull the “I told you so” card after the fact that we made the grand final

Bloke couldn’t have been more wrong in 2019 haha
