Ryan Sutton a success story the Canberra Raiders would like to repeat

John Bateman may have grabbed the headlines for his performances in the NRL this season but Canberra’s Head of Recruitment Peter Mulholland was even more impressed by the Raiders’ other recruit from Wigan Warriors, Ryan Sutton.

“I think he was the success story of the year. I always expected Bateman to be good but Ryan, out of the four Englishman, was the success story. He achieved more milestones than we thought he would.

Canberra Raiders tracking Wigan Warriors youngsters who they 'would like to grab'

Riders head of recruitment Peter Mulholland admits there are a couple of young English players he’d like to grab.

“Wigan have got four or five really good young forwards coming through. Oliver Partington is a good kid, Morgan Smithies is a good kid, young (Jake) Trueman (at Castleford), the young centre at Wigan is a good kid and St Helens have a couple of really good forwards.”

Petes doing an amazing job tracking all these different systems and identifying talent and not only building the current squad, but having a strategies to refresh the squad in place.
Hes been absolutely crucial to the direction our club has headed and to continue to do it in spite of what hes going through personally deserves more praise than he can get.

I'll second (third, fourth) Morgan Smithies, he is built for success.

Peter Mulholland despite his health battles is doing a most outstanding job.

On the flip side I'm interested in the cost vs return of Sutton vs Guler vs Horsburgh vs Lui

Guler +2, Horsburgh +5

I don't see Lui being retained past his current contract, especially if there's good kids in the wings

You should be getting your 6% mate!

What do you think of those named in the article? Most likely to succeed?

Lui is the cheap professional forward you want to set the bar for Guler and Horsburgh to surpass. This is why Ricky is so keen on having depth and players fighting for a first grade position.

If the young players out perform a Lui or an Oldfield off the park, they will earn their position. But they shouldn’t have spots handed to them just because they are young and have a higher ceiling.

This is a good position for the club to be in.

Yeah. Luis has stayed at the raiders for slightly less than he was offered elsewhere so we are getting value.
At the end of this contract he is 30. By then he will either be surpassed already by Guler and Horse, in which case he can still stay, but may need a contract that reflects he's now top 30, not top 17 or if he's having a career swan song and still keeping Sutton et al out then good for him, he played some good FG early this year and he's playing on under. That helps.

Thankfully the NRL have established development contracts for clubs to retain players like Lui...

Smithies is nailed on. Wigan didn't miss Bateman much because of him.

Partington looks to have the goods, too - so much aggression that is very well directed for one so young.

I've banged on about Trueman on here before. Very classy and bags of ability, but it's harder to tell with a half, compared to a forward. If he carries on with his current trajection, he's going to be in a Thurston kind of class, but he could just as easily plateau and spend his career as a typical SL half.

Smithies related to Bob Smithies at all?

The ex Balmain player, I believe he married an English girl and may have livd in England before his passing.

Excuse me if already mentioned.

Lui doesn’t qualify for a development contract.

Well that's a shame. Seems the perfect candidate for whatever purpose those contracts are meant to be for.

I have been told to expect a 16/17yo from Wigan to join the junior ranks in the next few weeks.

Ronan Michael is coming over from Huddersfield for the year. He's a young prop and already an Irish international at 19.

Interestingly, he's actually Irish, which Brian Carney aside, is virtually unheard of. He's apparently very highly thought of.

Don't think this is the player you're referring to, though. No idea who that will be, but you can be certain that if he's from Wigan he'll have something about him.

The young Wigan player I am referring to has a 12 month placement with Canberra whatever that means. I have no idea if it means he will join up with the SG Ball squad or just play locally. He is a very good player.

Doubt he’d just play Canberra Raiders Cup, if he’s been brought out from England...

I am sure there are heaps of Irish people.

Bono for example.

16/17 seems very young. The NRL are trying to set up systems so country kids stay at home. Seems a bit much to bring kids that young.
