NRL draw 2020: Canberra Raiders want an Anzac Day game

The Canberra Raiders want to bring Anzac Day back to the home of the Australian War Memorial for the first time in a decade. Raiders chief executive Don Furner also wants the Green Machine to start their NRL season at Canberra Stadium for the first time since 2016.

ANZAC Day on a Saturday next year opens up an extra ANZAC Day game.

I believe the draw is out early next week.

NZ would be the obvious choice but I doubt the NRL will change them from playing the Storm on ANZAC Day.

Aside from wanting the crowd leaving ANZAC day AFL game, Storm have no real reason for having the ANZAC game. Let them keep the game, but against someone else. Give us the Warriors.

Wait... why does Canberra "deserve" it more than Melbourne?

He’s not saying they do. There’s three games on a Saturday, ANZAC Day is a Saturday this year, so the Sydney and Melbourne games can take place as well as Canberra. Don has said is that Canberra is the home of the Australian War Memorial and the headquarters of the defence forces.

I’m not sure any city “deserves” an ANZAC Day game actually, including Sydney and Melbourne. Other cities should have the opportunity to host those games too.

Yeah, agreed. It should be shared around.

Just like the NRL Grand Final should be in Brisbane the next two years... but the NRL doesn't have that kind of forward thinking.

Its not about "deserving" it more then any other team. Its about Canberra having more reasons to have it in Canberra.
There is this thing in Canberra called the "National War Memorial" , its kind of a big thing come ANZAC day. Its where a lot of the key artifacts from the war are kept, and the main focal point of ANZAC celebrations in this country.

There is also this place called Duntroon in Canberra, also pretty important when it comes to the defense force in this country.

Yep a few good reasons for us to have it over Melbourne and pretty much any other team

I think being the country’s capital city, home to NZ and Turkey embassies and home to the country’s main war memorial is a good enough reason to play an Anzac match here every few seasons.

But NRL commission don’t have a track record of understanding the broader picture.

To be fair, Canberra is a bit of a national focal point for ANZAC Day commemorations.

Whether a sporting contest should be part of those commemorations might be debatable, but if it's part of the NRL agenda then it makes sense for Canberra to be in the mix.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

I thought the NRL stopped saying there is a correlation between success and FTA coverage a few years ago?

Every team should get equal FTA coverage. It's pretty simple really.

Friday 6pm is an awful time slot. Surely a big fixture at a sensible time to capitalise on the grand final hype would've been a lot better.

What an absolute farce giving us, the grand finalist the opening 6pm game on Friday.

Yep, NRL still hates us!

We actually couldn’t play Sunday because the Brumbies are playing Waratahs. Perhaps they wanted Saturday to turn the ground around.

Does the NRL know how to promote the code outside of the existing derby games?

They remain the most inept sporting organisation on the planet.
