Grand Final replay heading to Perth?

Post by greeneyed »

The Daily Telegraph is reporting that the first draft of the NRL 2020 draw has the replay of the NRL Grand Final taking place in Perth... Roosters home game. Reportedly a request of the Roosters, who now have a deal with the Western Australian Government. It will be a Saturday game probably, and covered by Fox League... as Channel 9 doesn't have a sports broadcasting team in Perth, while Fox does.

I’ve always wanted to visit Perth so might be an excuse now...

Good call from the Roosters- will likely get a bigger turnout of blue, red and white fans in Perth than Sydney.

I could be tempted, depending on the venue.

If that were the case, I’d probably go. It’s expensive, but it would be an experience.

It won’t be Optus Stadium, it is the Stadium where the Perth Glory play. I think it is called HCF stadium or something like that. It is the old Perth Oval but it was turned into a rectangular stadium a few years ago.

I have been there before, it has a really good stand on the Eastern and Southern sides. I don’t think the Western stand is much from memory. Behind the Northern goal is basically a tin shed but it is where many of the Glory fans stand.

It’s a good location too. It is a bit of a hike but you can walk up Beaufort St from the city / Northbridge to the ground.

Apparently it is called HBF Park now. It has changed sponsorship names a number of times.

I thought it must have been early 2000s that it was converted because I remember being the runner for an AFL team on that ground in the late 90s.

Why?

This venue is a far, far better venue than Optus Stadium. I went to Origin there this year and it was a great atmosphere but it didn’t take away the fact it is an oval built for AFL and cricket.

HBF Park is a perfect size and will be near full whereas Optus could get 25k and will be more than half empty.

The fact the Western side stand is heritage listed is probably not ideal but the Eastern stand is similar to AAMI Park or Bankwest which are fantastic.

I was hoping it would be round 1 or an early round in Canberra. You'd get a huge crowd.

I suppose it could still happen.

Cause it is not really an experience. It is just another ground... probably inferior in quality to half or more of the regular stadiums. Going to the new stadium would be an experience.

It isn't like I haven't been to Perth before either... and it's not really a destination I feel compelled to re-visit.

We're also playing NRL Nines in the pre-season there... at HBF Park. I'd probably go if it were at the new stadium, but I'll probably save the cash.

The airfares are so expensive for a start.

I can reach Perth in 4 hours flying vs Sydney in 8.

I'll be there. Always wanted to go to Perth.

Might be best if you don’t go to any games.

Then you can save your cash.

Sadly, I can't afford to go to every game at the moment. I'm a poor retired person. I should probably start a Go Fund Me campaign... send GE to the Nines and the Grand Final replay in Perth.

In other games, I assume the Magic Round will be Mother’s Day weekend again as the Reds are playing at home the following two weekends.

Presumably our Wagga game will be the weekend before if they want to combine it again with the race day on the Friday.

We are probably going to go to Europe for 6-8 weeks about May so I did suggest I could get an overdose of all 8 games in Magic Round before missing a few weeks.

I wouldn’t worry too much about going to the nines.

I expect it will be. I thought that was the deal with the Wagga council.

Being a Perthite (Dont know what you call us) i would probably prefer it o be at HBF Park as its rectangluar and when i went to the Aussies Vs New Zealand there a couple of years ago the place was rocking with 20k people there. I probably wouldnt want to watch a game at optus stadium, hence why i didnt go to the origin......
