Keep him at all costs: Canberra Raiders forward Joe Tapine hopes club locks down Jack Wighton

Canberra forward Joe Tapine has urged the Raiders to lock down off-contract five-eighth Jack Wighton at all costs.

“He’s been outstanding for us this year,” Tapine said. “He’s got all he deserved, playing for his state and his country. I’d love him to stay, for the team and who he is. We’re really good mates.

Plenty of journalistic license in the "at all costs" part. Tapine said nothing like that in the quotes.

What if 'all all costs' means 10% of your own contract, Joe?

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Haha I was just thinking the same thing... "Sorry Joe, we're going to have to move you on for 2021 and beyond so we can lock down Jack Wighton and George Williams."

And honestly, when you look at our roster, that's not that absurd a suggestion anymore!

That’s what I thought too. I ha already adjusted the title though... to remove “wantaway”... the suggestion Wighton wants to leave. Is that even a word? I think he wants a better long term contract with the Raiders.

RS: So Joey, i saw your comments in the paper about Jack Wighton. Interesting. Keep him at all costs you say?
JT: Yeah, i just said how i feel you know?
RS: I do know, i do. And look we are trying but the cap is tight, and that's why i asked you to come in for a chat. It would help us tremendously if you would take a small hai..
JT: **** Jack Wighton
RS: Thanks for coming in Joe.

Read the article guys. Tarps said nothing like "at all costs". He simply expresses that he wants Jack to stay a Raider. No doubt a sentiment carried by the whole team*.

Sombreros and brown envelopes aside, could the Roosters be looking at Jack as an immediate replacement for Cronk?

Yeah they’ve made a pretty substantial investment in the young Flanno
And they know the 7 figure Keary deal needs to be done soon too

So no, I don’t think they’d be in on Wighton at his costs

I don't think the Roosters and/or Melbourne's of the world would poach Jack at the numbers we are talking about. He is not as influential as Cronk or Keary or Smith. He's more like Lattrell. And I don't think the Roosters would pay a million a year for Lattrell. He is estimated to be on 550-600k at the Roosters.

Latrell is a pretty good comparison really. Chequered history with behaviour and mental health. Talented but not good enough fb, can play 5/8 well - but probably best suited to centre. Maybe we should upgrade Lattrell with Jack's money and bring him into 5/8 in 2021

A few more head knocks and Politis will offload him in a heartbeat.

Wighton is clearly on very good money with us. It won't take much for him to extend here. This is more about him changing management.

We didn’t hear from his manager actually... we heard directly from him.

However, I’m confident both players will want to stay with the Raiders. This is just part of the unfortunate business of contract negotiations.

Jack Wighton turns down Raiders option to go on open market for 2021

Post by LastRaider »

I’m confident about Bateman staying not so much Wighton.

Some of the bottom 8 teams have a bit in reserve available in the cap which worries me. They could go big and with the amount of international players in our team, our cap might be too tight to match an aggressive offer.

I’m confident Jack will play out 2020 but beyond that I’m not confident

Wighton was quoted in the media today as saying he was keen to stay with the Raiders beyond 2020, loved Canberra, and was largely turning down the option just because he changed managers (which I don't really get, but anyway)

Jack Wighton reaffirms love for the Canberra Raiders amid contract concern

Jack Wighton says a decision to turn down an option for 2021 with the Raiders has nothing to do with his love for the Green Machine.

"I'm 100 per cent there for next year, and the option for the following year in my favour was signed under my old management, and that's the only reason I haven't taken it up,'' Wighton said. "That's all it is. I love Canberra. I love the place, the community, the fans and the club.''

His old manager would get a percentage of he took up the contract extension. If he declined the extension and signs a new contract his new manager gets paid.

Either way, Jack gets paid.

Haha Jack is being remarkably upfront there isnt he?
Basically his manager is like "Yeah no, we're not taking up that option so you can pay that other **** money"

This will be a formality, but the timing of it for us will mean it'll also come with an upgrade.

Why would you advantage someone you fired as your manager?

Yes, sorry, you're right. Fair enough call. Although I note his new manager specifically said he'd be testing his options on the market.

Managers are a cancer on the game IMO.
