At the start of season 2019 no one could be sure how JB or CNK would go in the NRL. On the basis of 'little or no NRL form' to go on, the negotiated price would have been on the low side. They have proved they are worthy of an upgrade. How much that is will depend on the cap. This will not be easy with the Brit Williams on the way. Not to mention Bailey S and Ryan Sutton. Then there has been the development of the likes of HorsPOWER and NC playing SOO. I don't see 'upgrades for all' without putting a heap of pressure on the cap. Interesting times post Grand Final.

Ahh, talking about renegotiating the contract of a marquee player, one year into a 3 year deal, on the eve of the club's first grand final in a quarter of a century is more than a little bit inflammatory. Hence the commentary all through the media.

What other definition of bombshell is there?
One of the best players in the world is being paid like he's an average NRL footballer and would like to redo his deal in the offseason.
That's a very low bar you're setting for a bombshell.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. The issue is the timing, not the contract.

Seems like very odd timing. Almost too odd.

Left field idea- maybe this was intentional so Bateman (our only player with grand final winning experience) takes all the media attention and leaves our other players sheltered.

I read that and thought that’s a silly conspiracy theory!

Then I considered that Paul Kent is still fuelling the fire with articles/rants Image now I’m reconsidering...

It’s starting to look like it was planned..
you really think a new acting agent for a player would bring this up now with the risk that his player will get the **** over him bringing it up on grand final week?? I don’t think so

John Bateman clause for concern

John Bateman's future at the Raiders may be clouded as he seeks an upgrade on his current deal - and it has since surfaced there is a renegotiation clause in Bateman's contract.

However, that clause doesn't guarantee Bateman an upgrade, rather an understanding the Raiders will do their best to accommodate him.

I would be more than happy to commit more money to John Bateman. He deserves every cent. However I believe if we do so it should be on the proviso he commits longer term to us. Both parties win in that scenario.

Bateman's hopes take a hit

John Bateman’s hopes of earning a contract upgrade next season have been further dented by the impressive performance of the Raiders this season.

The Raiders were already struggling to upgrade the Englishman’s contract in 2020, and now have a number of representative clauses that have been triggered as a result of the team’s breakout season.

I’ve never understood why clubs pay players for earning rep selection??? Seems stupid. Surely the payment they get from their State or Country should be enough?

I believe we upgrade then when they first make it. It's a performance incentive I suppose.

Really the managers demand these sort of clauses anyway.

"The Raiders are happy for Aidan Sezer and Joseph Leilua to look for new homes next season, however there is a strong chance they remain in the nation’s capital.

If they stay, which the Raiders are happy for them to do, the club’s salary cap will all but be full for next year."

Well Aiden is not staying so there's at least $500k once you replace him in the roster available for upgrades...

Hmmm all that talk of the club being a more attractive option for players to come now also has a flip side- no one wants to leave!

If we can't upgrade him he'll have to sit tight for a year but they really do need to put something aside for 2021 to keep him happy. He'd be mad to leave right now and I don't think he will.
