Canberra Raiders forward Luke Bateman re-signs on one year deal

Post by sprintman »

Luke Bateman to Super League according to Total RL. Apparently he’s ‘surplus to requirements’.

Luke Bateman offered to Super League clubs

The latest player offered to Super League clubs is Canberra Raiders forward Luke Bateman. However, the form of John Bateman, coupled with minor knee surgery, has meant the 24-year-old hasn’t played a single game this season.

Not a single game?

Was Mounties cancelled and no one told me ?
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

I think he’d do pretty well in that competition. He’s been a good representative of this club imo and I still reckon he’d be a good squad member on minimum NRL wage. Can definitely understand him exploring his options though that’d be less than halving his wage compared to his latest contract I presume.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

I’d be looking to sign him if I ran the Titans tbh. While they need talent, they more desperately need some players who try their guts out and lead by example and he’d be a good start on a small amount of money imo.

Yeah he'd be a great buy on min wage as squad filler. 70 games experience. Excellent trainer.

Luke Bateman re-signs with Canberra Raiders on a one year deal

Canberra Raiders forward Luke Bateman has re-signed with the club on a one-year deal. Bateman was off-contract at the end of this season but has signed a new one-year deal to keep him at the club until the end of the 2020 season.

“Obviously I’ve had a disappointing season with injury which set me back and didn’t allow me to push my case for an NRL position, but I love this club and I’ve always said that and I’m happy to stay and keep working hard to try and get back into the NRL team,” Bateman said.

Fine with this. He's not getting in anyone's way and if we do need him for 2-3 games during the year he'll be fine off the bench.

If its a min wage or near min wage 1 yr deal, im ok with this. Experienced depth can be invaluable. And make no mistake, the club and player know this is a depth deal.

I'm happy with this re-signing. Always gives his all and won't let anybody down.

In the current climate of attitude and commitment in defence, Luke Bateman could easily slot into the 17 if required and fill a role.

Hard to say if I’m happy or unhappy about this without further context. On face value agree with everyone’s comments on here and I would assume he isn’t breaking the bank, but if resigning him reduces the likelihood of locking in other higher priority signatures then maybe it’s not the best outcome. Good on him, he seems a good fella and hard worker with the right attitude. I trust Don did all the sums thoroughly so all good I guess.

He seems like a very good bloke. Reportedly a very good influence, works really hard, the coaches would no doubt love a player like this in the squad. The number of good young forwards coming through... it’ll be very competitive to get into the top 17.

Agreed. If it's close to min wage I've got no issues here. It was frustrating when he was a regular in our 17 but it's clear that the club/coaching staff see him as depth now.

You need low wage players like him to fill out the squad - he's got experience, he knows the team and the system, and seems to be a good trainer. That's the type of player you want on the lower end contracts... you want a combo of guys who fit that description and young guns with potential to develop.

He's behind around 9-10 players for a spot in the team so yeah, this is to basically fill out the squad and not much more. It'll be year by year for him from here on in.

Notwithstanding a plane crash killing our entire first grade squad I dont see him playing any games next year.
Frankly hes in the way of a more talented youngster coming through.

Do you reckon the NRL would give us special dispensation for that or make Bateman play by himself?

I think most people rate him quite fairly tbh... definitely not a better player than people give him credit for. Maybe a worse player than what the guys who overrate him think. But fine as a low wage squad filler which seems to be how the club rates him nowadays.

Most here feel the same way. He's a handy player to fill out the extended squad. We know what we're getting with Bateman and he's a good club man. He was actually playing some decent footy late last year.

Yep, happy enough with this.
He's a good squad guy who does it the right way off the park and helps the culture of the club, he's a guy that when young guys get promoted to the squad the coach can point to and say "look at that guy, he's not in our 17 most weeks and look at how he approaches his work on the training paddock. That's the standard."
and i dont think he's nearly as bad as people think. I think there are going to be times in a season where you're down solders in the middle due to a combination of injury/suspension and for us rep duty... and i think in such circumstances, Luke Bateman is a pretty handy bench middle who will come on in limited minutes and take plenty of hit ups and making plenty of tackles

It's likely none of those tackles or hit ups will be particularly impactful, but he'll do it and hopefully that will contribute to lessening the workload of other players who can have impact

Good depth re-signing. Experienced solid player who always gives 100% and will never let you down, as well as being an excellent role model for younger players. Every squad needs guys like him around. I'm pleased.

Waste of a top 30 spot, he won't play first grade for the raiders again,
But he would of taken a pay cut, which is admirable at least

Yep, ill reconsider my last post from that point of view. If he is a good trainer and mentor for the young blokes then another year is good, incentive based, if you want to think of it like that.

I wouldn't write him off too soon. Hes a former jnr qld origin player with oodles of potential. Still very young and could hit his straps at any time. Been plagued with injuries this year but maybe an off season might be the making of him. Agreed plenty of competition ahead of him but if he gets back, he'll bloody deserve it no doubt.

Na i agree with Mrs Bateman
He was repped for his state his entire junior career. He's an out and out middle forward and those typically dont mature until later. It's probably fair to say he's not going to be a rep player, but a Dunamis Lui type of career where he's a good solid NRL middle is probably a reasonable goal
