Yeah, who would you prefer to play in the first round of the finals, and why?
They're both bad choices in my opinion!

My preference is we finish 3rd over 4th. It's higher up the table, and reflects our standing as clear 3rd best team in the comp going into the finals.

Easier for me to go to the SCG than Melbourne so 3rd is my preference.

We're going to have to beat both of them IMO if we're to take the premiership. Slight preference for the Roosters in Week 1.
Re: What's your preference : Storm or Roosters for the first finals game
It'd be easier for me to go to Sydney too, that swings it.The Rickman wrote: ↑September 5, 2019, 11:01 amWell we should all care about what's easier for zim then, shouldn't we??

What day are we likely to play if we finish 3 compared to 4

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Storm. I feel like the Roosters are a near flawless side on skill alone and have a whole gear we haven't seen this year yet, whereas the Storm are a great side but rely more on tactics. I prefer our odds against the latter, especially in the semis.

If we can play up tempo we'll win the comp.
If It's a wrestling game storm or roosters will win

Re: What's your preference: Storm or Roosters for the first finals game
I agree with Rickman, we should be aiming to finish as high as possible on the ladder regardless of opponent. If that means we play Roosters, so be it.
Re: What's your preference: Storm or Roosters for the first finals game
Either, I think we can beat both if we play well
Sydney's easier to get to but I love Melbourne

It’s funny because while I think the storm are tactically smarter and better at slowing the ruck, the roosters really **** us up with absolute **** scrappy play, deliberate penalties and injury stops.

Re: What's your preference: Storm or Roosters for the first finals game
No one has won outside the top 4 in NRL history.
No one has gone back to back in NRL history.
In the current finals system, started 2012, 1st = thrice, 2nd = once, 3rd = thrice >>> none from 4th.
From 1999 to 2018:
With Storm stripped titles - 1st place won 7 titles, 2nd place won 4 titles, 3rd place won 6 titles, 4th place won 3 titles.
Without Storm stripped titles - 1st place won 6 titles, 2nd place won 3 titles, 3rd place won 5 titles, 4th place won 2 titles
So, history suggests that GF winners more likely finished 1st or 3rd.
Figures from: https://www.reddit.com/r/nrl/comments/4 ... o_win_the/
I've added the info from 2016 til now. (Sharks from 3rd 2016, Storm and Chooks from 1st 2017 and 2018).
We cant come 1st, so our best statistical chance is 3rd. Lets come 3rd.

The way we came back against the Storm a few weeks ago, there the team I want to play first.

Don't care who we play as long as we play well and win, we gotta beat what's infront of us regardless!

Winning in Melbourne twice is a big ask. I'd prefer Sydney.

Re: What's your preference: Storm or Roosters for the first finals game
I want to win this weekend, so in that case 3rd.
However, if we are to finish 3rd in all likelihood we have a 'smoother' run to the GF. By smoother it'll still be incredibly tough no doubt if we are to topple Sydney and Melbourne. We finish 3rd and lose in Week 1 we play either Broncos or Eels in week 2 and then Storm in week 3 (most likely), as opposed to Sea Eagles or Sharks in week 2 and then Roosters in week 3 (most likely). I see the former scenario as better TBH. But regardless I think we have just as much chance beating Roosters in Sydney as beating Storm in Melbourne. We still have to beat the best to win the GF.
So let's finish 3rd.

It will surely be Saturday so all the top 4 get at least a 7 day turnaround.dubby wrote: ↑September 5, 2019, 11:51 am What day are we likely to play if we finish 3 compared to 4

Re: What's your preference: Storm or Roosters for the first finals game
I want 3rd and play the Roosters although I will hold off complete judgement until after the Parra Manly game .
1. SCG is easier to get to than the Melbourne (although watching at the SCG is rubbish).
2. I know winning week 1 is key. But I believe it is a little easier if we happen to loose week 1 to Rooster than Storm. Because if Manly happen to beat Parra this week baring any other major upset this week or next we would play the winner of Parra v Broncos in the following week. Then provided we win that we would play Melbourne in Melbourne. I think this is easier than likely playing Manly in week 2 (even without Tom) then going on the road to play the Rooster at the SCG.
3. Finishing higher on the ladder is more deserving of the team performance this year.
I just want to get to the GF and then anything can happen on the day.

Re: What's your preference: Storm or Roosters for the first finals game
Matt, do you have the stats on premiers that have won week 1 versus lost week 1 handy?
Is the reason 3rd is doing reasonably because they have won more of the 2v3 matchups flipping 1 and 2 into the same side of the draw?

In the NRL era North Queensland 2015, before that Brisbane in 2006, Bulldogs 04, Melbourne 99, and Brisbane 98 in the top 10 format (technically week 2)

Re: What's your preference: Storm or Roosters for the first finals game
Winning the first game is the key. That pits the two heavyweights against each other on the other side of the draw.
That’s the key to us winning in my opinion.

Our position gets decided tonight if Rorters win. Souths will be keen to grab 3rd though as it means they get an unofficial home final.

I'll say that I think the roosters were in 5th gear valve bouncing against the raiders last game.edwahu wrote:Storm. We only need to beat them next week and maybe again in the grand final. **** em, this team is good enough to beat them. We've only had a couple of games click with attack this year, and still will finish top 4.
Bloody good times

Roosters. They were genuinely afraid of us at the last game.
But also, a trip to Sydney - especially on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon - would be as close to a home game as we could get. We can just ship several hundred Raiders fans up the Hume. Hopefully buses will be organised or something!
