That’s a good question. For the trials, the NRL should expect that clubs follow the normal rules for Tuesday afternoon announcements. It’s a very basic thing which promotes the clubs and the code.
TBF, not all teams have, but it be the usual TLT deal.

I think all the clubs should do it.

Yep. I'd feel much better coming into the season if Ricky already had at least one classic smokescreen manoeuvre under his belt. I'm worried he's going to come in undercooked, I heard he's been doing too much charity and has barely kicked a chair all off-season.

While sad, if this was any Tuesday during the season, a team list would be submitted.

Young is suspended for another 5 or 6 wks. He wont get starting minutes this wk.

If I were to guess, I think Ricky will start with:
1. CNK
2. Simo
3. Croker
4. Scott
5. Cotric
6. Wighton
7. G Williams
8. Papa
9. Hodgo
10. Sia
11. Horse (as per the fan day)
12. Whitey
13. Tarpz

14. Havili
15. Guler
16. Sutton
17. Lui

Rest... probably doesnt matter much

So I'd assume from this O'Donnell and Spencer are closest to getting upgraded to the top squad.

The NRL doesn't seem to have formally announced this, as far as I recall, but it seems suspended players are free to play trials... but the old rule where they could serve one match suspension in an official trial appears to have gone as well.

It was announced last week that Tyrone May, for example, was clear to play trials, despite his recent lengthy suspension. So Young can play.

This is the last official list of players released by the club... except I have updated it for subsequent announcements (Frawley promoted to the top 30, release of Joey Leilua) and what appears to be the imminent release of Jack Murchie.

2020 Train and Trial Players

Dan Keir
Duwanye Mariner
Reuben Porter
Matt Timoko

Pre-Christmas Training Players

Adam Cook (Under 20s)
Lachlan Lewis (Under 20s)
Jordan Martin (Under 20s)
Tom Robertson
Daine Spencer
Leo Thompson (Under 20s)
Sila Titiuti (Under 20s)
Trey Mooney (Under 20s)

2020 NRL Squad

John Bateman
Luke Bateman
JJ Collins
Nick Cotric
Jarrod Croker
Matt Frawley
Emre Guler
Siliva Havili
Josh Hodgson
Corey Horsburgh
Sebastian Kris
Dunamis Lui
Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad
Michael Oldfield
Josh Papalii
Curtis Scott
Bailey Simonsson
Harley Smith-Shields
Sia Soliola
Tom Starling
Ryan Sutton
Joe Tapine
Elliott Whitehead
Jack Wighton
George Williams
Sam Williams
Hudson Young
Semi Valemei

Development Players

Darby Medlyn
Andre Niko
Jarrett Subloo
Kai O’Donnell

So that is 28 players in the top 30 - and it is a bit worrying we have Luke Bateman out for the first two months, Seb Kris unavailable on extended sick leave, Hudson Young unavailable due to suspension to Round 6, John Bateman under injury cloud for early rounds and Curtis Scott under thread of stand down/suspension (although based on nothing other than reading the tea leaves, he might avoid stand down).

In any event, there are two spots left for the top 30 and two development spots left. The Raiders must get to 29 in the top 30 by the start of the season.

Kai O'Donnell, Daine Spencer and Matt Timoko are the three players outside the top 30 named for the trial. Timoko and Spencer look certain to get at least a development contract, and my guess would be that Timoko gets promoted to the top 30, given that the outside backs look most stretched - although Spencer is probably a bit more versatile (can play fullback). I'd assume a fair few other guys on the list would then get Mounties deals.

Matt's talking about who is going to start. Would be a bit odd if Young can't play for the first month+ but you start him in the second row for our only trial. Spot should go to whoever is going to be there for round 1 if Bateman is out.
Young can slot in later.

Canberra Raiders hope to do things by halves in trial against Canterbury Bulldogs

It's Canberra Raiders fans' first chance to see their new halves pairing in action. It's also the main thing coach Ricky Stuart wants to take out of the game.

"I just hope he finds a little bit of cohesion and combination with Jack. He's played a lot of football with Josh Hodgson from an international point of view, but he hasn't been able to do a lot of training with Jack.

Seriously guys sort it out. Season hasn't even started yet.

I'm oddly pumped up for this trial. George Williams better be the second coming of Ricky Stuart and Curtis Scott the next Leilua or I will be bitterly, bitterly disappointed.

Well it’s the first game for Scott in Raiders colours before he goes on a 8-10 week NRL vacation.
Thanks Scott you knew we lost Rappa, BJ and S Kriss has been on personal leave and hasn’t trained at all. So with you gone our backs become a bit thin .... yes it’s a chance for some younger guys but that’s if they are in our top 30 right ?

Canberra Raiders recruit George Williams flying, John Bateman out for seven games

In good injury news, Canberra Raiders recruit George Williams is flying. But on the flipside, his English teammate John Bateman could miss the opening seven rounds of the NRL season.

"It'll be good. It'll be the first time we've taken the park together in a game so it's going to be awesome having the big fella [Williams] there beside me," Wighton said.

Canberra Raiders co-captain Josh Hodgson looking forward to Saturday's trial in Port Macquarie

CANBERRA co-captain Josh Hodgson can't wait to team up with fellow Englishman George Williams in Saturday's NRL trial in Port Macquarie.

"George will have experienced it in England where good teams like Wigan - who have been successful over the last few years - can play teams at the bottom end of the table, not play too well and still get a result. It's a lot different over here; if you don't turn up - it doesn't matter if you're the bottom side in the league or the top - you get beat."

Cost of staging NRL trial in Port Macquarie a concern for local league

GROUP Three Rugby League chairman Wayne Bridge says at least 1000 more tickets will need to be sold for Saturday's NRL trial between the Canterbury Bulldogs and Canberra Raiders at the Port Macquarie Regional Stadium to cover the group's $70,000 outlay to stage the game.

"So far we've covered about $45,000," Mr Bridge said earlier this week. "So fingers crossed we'll get good weather and we'll get bums on seats."

Canterbury Bulldogs and Canberra Raiders prepare for NRL trial in Port Macquarie

Canterbury and Canberra will end a near-decade long NRL drought in Port Macquarie when Josh Jackson and Jarrod Croker lead out their respective sides on Saturday. The last time any NRL club brought a match to the region was in 2011 when Penrith hosted Newcastle.

"You'd rather play somewhere that holds a couple of thousand and have it packed out so i'm looking forward to it. Hopefully the locals can get the Viking clap going," Cromer said.

Was a story on the local news in Port Macquarie tonight... the local league has to meet all the costs of the travelling teams, even the costs of the travelling NRL referees. By tonight, they said they need another 500 ticket sales just to break even. That means 2500 tickets have been sold, 3,000 needed for break even. No assistance has been provided by the local council or NRL.

You’d think they could at least throw in the referees.

Local media will always bring the situation down. That is simply what they do.

I just spent a great night with both teams and I have to say just about every Raiders is so approachable. Even the Coaching staff are great. My Random take aways from the players and coaches from tonight. I rarely get to spend any one on one time with them so maybe these are silly comments that most people know.

1. everyone is really looking forward to the season. However many players mention a disruption to preseason from Curtis to moving 10 days of training to QLD.
2. Sisa seems like such an Rugby league fan. He mentioned a number of players and coaches that he is excited to see this year perform and that he wants a competitive league. He splent a long time talking how he needed to get out of Sydney due to the crowd he was with in Sydney before going to the super league. He is just loves his children.
3. Josh H Is really looking forward to coaching and would be even willing to cut his career short to get the right role.
4. There is no specific KPI for player performance for the Raiders. A few teams will set requirements such as run X meter on x amount of hit ups. But not the raiders. It is more of a qualitative approach.
5. There is a really lack of knowledge as to what the players are doing and when. They seemed to be told last minute where they are to be, what to wear and What they are doing. The Raiders players earlier in the day didn’t know there was a dinner function on for them tonight or that the “captains” session was on tommorrow.
6. Ricky is fairly annoyed at “everybody” wins at a Junior level football. He thinks you need to teach winners and lossers.
