Ricky Stuart interview:

Morning before the big clash... have to be happy with last night's results? What those teams have done is brought themselves into contention for the eight. It could be Round 25 before the top eight is sorted out. The bottom four today, the top four on Sunday. We'll be interested in the ladder on Monday.

Looks congested from position 5 to 12? Yes and the next few weeks those teams are playing eachother. For us, what we need to do is to focus on what we can control. We must look at the next game and prepare each session the best we can. We've had a lot of injuries, the young players have done a great job to put us into the position we are in today.

Joey Leilua is ready to play, he's worked hard to get him to where he is today. He's done himself justice to get back and will be a significant part of the team over the next five games. Still to decide if he'll play the Roosters, will depend on the game and the opponents when to bring him in.

The medical team and conditioning team are great. They have a lot of care about how they work. I could see our injured players would be coming back at the back end of the season, and that would be an advantage at this stage coming into the finals.

Joey Leilua... how he adapted to coming back into contact, showed how much rehab he'd done, his surgeon has given him confidence he's as well placed as anyone to come back from this.

Our defensive effort against Parramatta... we had about 50 per cent possession and very low completions. More recently, we've been in the high 80s for completions and that makes a big difference in defence. I was very pleased with the defence against Penrith, that gave the boys a lot of belief, defending set after set.

We have changed our attitude and structure in defence, we've changed the composition of the team, we have changed everything. There are two or three or four defensive shapes and structures... and sometimes you have to employ them all in a game. The team is believing in our structures. Andrew McFadden and Brett White have done a great job, but the bond amongst the players and their belief makes it work too.

We've been beating teams we should if we want to be a serious threat. The Roosters are last year's premiers, they're a very good unit, consistent and patient. They can play conservatively, patiently, and we'll have to go with that.

* This is a summary that is written as the interview unfolded live. It attempts to replicate as many words and phrases as possible, but it is not a transcript. You can listen to a podcast of the whole program later this afternoon: https://www.abc.net.au/radio/canberra/p ... d/11381412

Ricky Stuart's interview will be about 10-15 minutes into the program.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.
