Poor old Madge Maguire.

Clearly dissapointed with his teams performance..

Then ducked next door to join the Old Boys keg show..

I'd like to see the stats on our high cross field kicks to the wingers.

Feels as though we hardly ever get a result.

It’s a ploy with diminishing returns - in the last few years refs have steadily let ‘escorting’ worsen without penalty, and the result is the high ball to a winger is slowly phasing out of the game and the low kick behind is increasing. Bombs to a winger are exceptionally rarely a clean 1on1 contest anymore. Odds are
Much better of a scoring or repeat set result keeping the ball kn the deck and rolling it in goal.

I'd be giving CNK a week off somewhere over the next few weeks. He's resilient but first year in FG and the load at FB and the battering he's copping will have an impact eventually. We need him firing for semis and that's more important to winning the comp than whether we run 3rd or 6th. If he's injured maybe next week, if not maybe the Warriors on the 5-day turnaround. He is perhaps our least replaceable asset with the current squad (Jack and Hodgo in the argument).

If we really believe we are in the Roosters/Souths/Storm echelon we will adopt that mentality. We've got other players that have missed games via injury and suspension that can lift.

There were a few bad options, the Oldfield kick straight to the winger, Croker kicking into opposition and several cross field kicks. Sezer has been a lot more involved and is contributing nicely, just needs to own the 5th more. We seem to be happy to handover at 5th on opposition try lines and back our defence. Which as others have said previously we would have folded. 12 errors also - I think it’s building nicely - few players coming back and we can have a red hot go.

I thought the tigers were very willing last night and while our line speed slowed a bit as the game wore on - with a couple of raleighs to lift the team, we defended very well to hold out a team that on the night would have been a challenge for anyone to hold out.
I think maguire was a bit harsh on the tigers with the criticism. They played well.
Its therefore reassuring to see us holding them to 12 points.

I wanna also throw in a shout-out for Dunamis Lui. The guy has copped a veritable flogging on here for the past few years but he's worked hard and diligently and he's become a very dangerous forward. Watching him and Papa hunt together is enormous fun. He may have been a fill-in once but he's definitely one of our main forwards now and he does his job well. I was so happy for him to score that try and it was good to see the boys were happy too.

Sometimes the "ordinary" players need a chance, and we gave Dunamis that chance.

These are the positive sides to a three year contract for a journeyman player. Suddenly he has three years in the bank and can focus on being a highly professional player for his team, without worrying about his next contract.

Remember the story about his young daughter telling him he had to stay in Canberra, not take up his other offer. Probably on half Boyd’s contract with twice the effort.

We had all the ball in the 1st half, they had all the ball in the 2nd. Think we had 2 sets in their 20 in the 2nd half. Thought tigers were quite good in the 2nd half. Couple of errors but we were nowhere as bad as some on here are making out. No surprises there though!

Which one? He did a few that were excellent.

I also especially enjoyed Oldy shooting through the line at such speed he made two of the Tigers faceplant each other.

My worry about the "trust your defense" approach we're currently relying on is that it is so exhausting, mentally and physically. Exhibit No. 1 CNK.

Don't get me wrong...great defense is what wins Minor Premierships (and often Premierships too)...but not the style of frenetic effort-based stuff we're currently surviving on. Rather, you need a structured, calm defensive line where players trust their inside men to make one-on-one tackles. At the moment, we're all turning up for each other (which is great attitude), but we're spending too much gas in defense...which is why it looks like we're shutting up shop sometimes (when in fact we're just too gassed from our defensive set to put anything into carrying the ball).

Ricky is a genius at getting players to bust a gut for him and for each other, but we need him to rely more on repeatable, sustainable structure in defense. IMHO of course.

Lui is a good player, does his job perfectly. Those on here who don’t think he deserves a spot in our 17 don’t really understand the dynamics of a rugby league team

Luis has earned his place. Another of our team that wants to be here, not just somewhere to pick up a paycheque. Titans have found out that that isn’t a good idea, with Boyd, Peachey et al

I think in other years I might have been disappointed with the second half too but I thought the tigers played really well and gave us a lot of different looks and strong ball movement
We defended them extremely well

I thought HorsPower did his job well off the bench too. A couple of offloads, one in particular to Jack early in the second half, shows he is much more than a one dimension middle forward. Not a lot of minutes but also defensive work rate was good via my eye test. The young man is developing nicely. Hudson Young available next week but I would expect him to come back via Mounties unless the JB shoulder injury is worse than a stinger.

Guler I thought looked the most comfortable I've seen him which is a good sign for next year but he really needs to figure out how to get more involved. Charnze shouldn't be doing tough carries with 1 arm and on 1 leg on the 3rd tackle.
We don't want his career being over in 2 years.

No players charged from the match at least. I was happy to see our player "put on report" for the late shot wasn't even considered but how did that high shot on CNK not even warrant a fine?

20-12 against a team coming 4th and with the Tigers having a number of reserve graders in their team. I thought they went alright

Thought they were very well drilled inside our 20 and their kicking game was immense for the majority of the night. In general they're lacking across the park a bit quality wise, getting rid of overpaid dead weight like Reynolds will be a good start to free the cap up.

glad to see common sense prevailed with emre,

there were a few shots from the tigers that they "missed" last night.
the knees into CNK should have been on report and charged IMO

Sea Eagles jump over Raiders in NRL.com.au power rankings

3. Canberra Raiders (2)
A great win at home on Old Boys Day. It looked like they would run away with it early but they had to get gritty and work hard for it in the second half. There might still be some questions about their game management in big games but they're doing everything they can at the moment to cement a top-four spot.

Turbo Jurbo Turbo Jurbo will have Sydney frothing.

Plus an actual slightly concern of mine is Jack has the error yips again. He's been really good this year and coming back and not letting one error ruin his day. But Darwin was a Barry and he's had a few since. He's grown a lot as a player but the knocker he had to overcome as a FB (which he did and wa superb last year 1st half imo) was that error streak he has in him that can go for a month...

With Jack on song- we beat can anyone. If he's a bit off we have to find other ways to win and compensate and it gets tougher.

I'm watching the replay and I'd like to call **** on the short dropout penalty. It's a completely nonsensical rule.

You can practically do the splits on the sideline, have your toe on the sideline, and touch the ball, and it will be called out on the full. You can have a single foot in the in-goal area and lean into the field of play to catch the ball, and it will be called caught in the in-goal.

But you have your foot on the 10m line and catch it behind you, suddenly the ball has to have travelled 10.
