Re: 2019 Rd 15 V Eels: Teams and Previews
Can somebody ask Ben what kind of pre-game stuff Raiders will be holding in Darwin
e.g. meet the players and if there will be a public training run held?

Re: 2019 Rd 15 V Eels: Teams and Previews
As others have mentioned we've got the bye coming up but if you're concerned about wearing him out we might see the same prop rotation as last origin with papa on the bench. Though with the longer turn around I think we'll see him start.
Re: 2019 Rd 15 V Eels: Teams and Previews
A friend of mine contacted the club and was told as this is an away game for the raiders/fly in/fly out 24 hour gig that there will be no open trainings or meet n greets.

Canberra Raiders rising star emerges as Dally M Medal contender
Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has always had an eye for talent, but the unearthing of star fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is impressive even by his standards.
"I'm really stoked that Ricky has stuck by me through some of the games I've had this year. He's always given me a bit of guidance and wanting me to improve and hopefully I can keep doing that and build off what's already been laid."

Thanks, I know teams tend to do less at their 'away' games, though a lot of people in Darwin don't seem to realise this and praise the Eels for doing player signings at Mindil beach etc. while the away team cops flak for not doing many public appearances

Hahaha the "four point game" quote really is silly, because by that logic if we lose, it's a two point loss.
Re: 2019 Rd 15 V Eels: Teams and Previews
you still get 2pts for the bye - which also grinds my gears just forget bye pts everyone gets them anyway so they make no difference

Re: 2019 Rd 15 V Eels: Teams and Previews
I absolutely agree with this 100%. Why give two points for the bye when everyone gets it??
Might as well give every team 17 billion points for the bye.
Re: 2019 Rd 15 V Eels: Teams and Previews
Keep in mind though that if we didn't award 2 points for the bye the problem isn't really solved and the table would still be confusing. Because assuming you get 2 byes in the year, that's effectively a week where you don't have the opportunity to get 2 points where the other teams do.

Yeah I don't really mind whether we give none, fifty, or two. I'm just saying there's no perfect answer.

I wonder why Oldfield is continually left out? He's a reasonable player. Admittedly, not a great center.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Well done to Kris for winning the spot over Oldfield. He hasn't looked out of his depth in firsts which I had somewhat expected.
Oldy is very unlucky, I wouldn't be surprised if he does eventually look elsewhere again.

Consistent defense and familiarity probably got him there. Oldie was good last time he was there. He brings more energy than Kris.
Re: 2019 Rd 15 V Eels: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
Ricky has certainly done less smokescreens this season than he used to. The Sezer for Williams game was about the only one of any note.Old School Green wrote:Does Kris play or is Oldie the classic Sticky smokey swooping in from the 21 jersey on game day?
Re: 2019 Rd 15 V Eels: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
I don't think Ricky is going to run smokescreen involving naming a rookie at the start of the week and the yanking him- you don't put a rookie in that position with their friends and family all expecting them to play their 2nd ever start or whatever all week.
So Kris will play. Will be good to get another look at him in a more settled/close to full strength side. He hasn't been much more than steady so far.
Interesting Sutton hasn't been able to force Lui out of the starting side yet. I thought that was coming.

Canberra Raiders' lime green wall born in the pre-season
Raiders assistant coach Andrew McFadden has revealed they spent about 80 per cent of the pre-season focussing on being more aggressive in defence - and they've now produced their best defensive start to the season since 1995.
"We want to be a lot more positive. Last year we were kind of a little bit too passive at times, so we wanted to have a more aggressive approach," he said.

Canberra Raiders fly physio to Darwin to ready Origin duo
Raiders sports scientist Tom Christian joined Jack Wighton and Josh Papalii in Darwin on Tuesday to get them ready for Friday's captain's run.
"I'm sending up our sport scientist, who's an accredited physio, [Tuesday] morning," Ricky Stuart said. "He'll put them through rehab, a little bit of work and they'll just have a little bit of time off until we get there Thursday."

Re: 2019 Rd 15 V Eels: Teams and Previews
I think its a psychological thing for most clubs. Say two teams are level pegging coming into the first bye round. If there are no points for a bye and one of the clubs has a bye, then that side falls behind if the other side wins and there is nothing they can do about it. The following week the side with the 'no points bye' then has to play catch up on the side which is then ahead on the competition table. It changes the mindset of the club which is behind through no fault of their own, simply the draw. Yes it evens out later in the season but for the rounds between the draws one side is disadvantaged on the ladder. I hope they keep the two points for a bye. Particularly in Round 16.Azza wrote: ↑June 25, 2019, 4:05 pm Keep in mind though that if we didn't award 2 points for the bye the problem isn't really solved and the table would still be confusing. Interesting the team can’t fly to Darwin early to acclimatise... because of the football department cap. Couldn’t afford to do that and fly to Auckland early for the Warriors match, straight from Sydney, due to the short turnaround.

This is a bit of posturing surely. We have until 2020 to get under the cap and even if we don't it's a soft cap with a 30% tax.
