Well I guess the NRL are lucky it's origin week.

A grub act attacking someones eyes, McGuire should have got weeks for his and it again proves how incompetent the NRL are and that there's rules for some and not others.

At every level its dispicable.

Seems to me with the grade they are trying to send a message, and a low profile player from a low profile club is the perfect candidate to do that.

You don't consider a seven week ban is disproportionate, given McGuire only received a fine of $3000 odd for very similar incidents. You consider this to be the worst incident since 2004 in the NRL? Do tell.

The difference could be that the McGuire one half the "gouge" or action is actually hidden or out of shot, so it's harder to prove the full severity. Young's was all in full view and is a definite eye gouge imo. McGuires was too but the footage isn't as clear. So Young will get the full book.

He needs to get that out of his game and now the club will be missing another player for several weeks (on top of Hors' elbow break). Bloody idiot.

If George got 4 weeks then yeah, I'd say 4-5 weeks is fair. He did it, cop the penalty.

Here's another precedent from 2014. Grade 1 and no suspension.

To me that is a "gouge action", I didn't see that as obviously with Young.

Didn’t the McGuire decision happen because Cameron Smith ordered Munster not to dob in a fellow Qlder at the judiciary? Pretty sure that’s the difference.

Yeah pretty much. If a player makes a formal complaint they have to provide evidence which is then used for the grading. No formal complaint and it's video only.

Shockingly disproportionate and inconsistent.
Surely plan would be plead guilty to charge but challenge grading utilising similar (Maguire) example from this year.
Grade 1 guilty and whatever the punishment is it is etc..
The review panel seem at odds with judiciary lately (Moloney and was it Morgan from NQ?) so hopefully all will go well

If we can avoid one because the MRC/Judiciary set a bad precedent, so be it. But that footage is damning to say the least.
It doesn't look good I agree. The question is the severity of the charge in my mind. If he got seven weeks, that'd be the longest suspension since 2004, they were just saying on The Sunday Footy Show. It is disproportionate. The lack of consistency with what the MRC does is astounding, really.
Junior Paulo was suspended for 9 weeks in 2015 for a dangerous throw

I get everyone is upset because of the McGuire fiasco
But what does everyone honestly think it is an appropriate punishment for that action?

2-3 weeks actually seems fine if not light! And that’s his charge. He got a charge that would have sat him down for 2-3 weeks with an early plea
It’s his loading that has beefed up the sentence

I want to know what that act is worth in the eyes of the GH?

I'd defend it as downgrade to grade 1. So nothing.

I think eye gouging is a dog act.

If Hudson actually gouged Tolman..he should be punished.

It's a low act, on par with spitting !

I think downgraded to the same as Maguire’s. Most areas of the law refer to precedent so I don’t see why it should be different?

@Nick... Put it another way... do you think he should be suspended longer than 2-3 weeks? I think the "priors" loadings are ridiculous myself. If they have accumulated points, fine. But they should treat each offence on its merits. I was expecting maybe a couple of weeks... three at the outside. The system is fundamentally broken when we have two incidents side by side, which are approximately in the same ball park... one attracts no suspension and a $3000 odd fine, and the other attracts five to seven weeks on the sidelines.

I also think the Raiders should definitely seek a downgrade in the charge. The judiciary is made up of ex players... and consistently show they give the players the "benefit of the doubt". On balance, I don't think what's happening with so many players being let off is right, though I acknowledge it could reflect the fact the MRC is coming up with to many severe and incorrect charges. Either way, the Raiders would be crazy to just accept five weeks. They should at least go for a downgrade... a lot of other clubs are, as they know the judiciary's record.

What irritates me is the inconsistency. The NRL seriously have no clue. What an unprofessional sporting body.

I reckon Young deserved a week or two out, it wasn't a great look, but what a complete overreaction this charge is. Terrible for a young up and coming player, we have to fight it.

It deserves 5 weeks at least. There is no place in the game for eye gouging. It is one of the worst acts of foul play in the game. McGuire deserved the same. There is no way to justify sticking your fingers into someone's eye, with the very real possibility of blinding another person.

But I'm not sure at all that he did that gerg. I hate the idea of a "facial", I'd very much support the NRL cracking down on it. It was inappropriate what was done. But at the moment, there'd be one "facial" at least every set and the NRL has said nothing about that. They're hardly even penalised on field. If the NRL decide to crack down in a sensible, consistent fashion, that's good. But that's not what the NRL has done, they've proven themselves to be wildly inconsistent.

Well it didn't happen with McGuire, so the precedent had been set, and youngs didn't look overly deliberate, it was a good old fashioned head rub but looks like tolman was looking for a penalty
