Canberra Raiders forward Hudson Young takes early plea, will miss five matches

Post by greeneyed »

Hudgson Young faces seven-match ban for dangerous contact

Hudson Young has been charged with grade-three dangerous contact - head/neck (eye contact) from an incident involving Bulldogs prop Aiden Tolman in the 34th minute of Canberra's 12-10 win.

He will receive a five-game ban if he submits an early guilty plea but could miss seven matches if he challenges the charge unsuccessfully at the judiciary due to a prior similar offence in the past two years.

Disproportionate considering Josh McGuire got a fine.

Early plea gets 5 , challenges gets 7

Wow the match review could see something that was so bad it was a grade 3.

Weird, I’m watching the game for the first time now and a minute after the penalty a notification comes through for the 5-7 week charge

Wow. That is ridiculous.

I just can’t see the justification for a grade 3

Fight the charge

Show the footage of McGuire as defense

No way in the world that’s a grade 3 and worth 5 weeks.

They should fight the charge and with a decent lawyer will at minimum get it reduced. I don't think the footage conclusively shows an eye gouge and the precedent was set with Macguire.

The club should at least fight the severity of the charge.

To me a gouge means sticking your fingers in the players eyes and Grade 3 suggests he didn't just contact the eyes but directly attacked them.

I don't see footage that shows that. Maybe I am biased though.

What was the previous charge he got loading for anyway?

This is the McGuire incident: https://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/watch ... 5eadb59f4d

Neither are good incidents, but McGuire was fined $3350.

And he had 3 prior incidents loading. His base fine was $1500.

Based on that footage, that’s a very ugly incident and deserves a lengthy suspension

If we can avoid one because the MRC/Judiciary set a bad precedent, so be it. But that footage is damning to say the least.

Canberra Raiders forward Hudson Young hit with massive ban

Canberra Raiders forward Hudson Young faces up to seven weeks on the sidelines for an alleged eye gouge in the Green Machine's gutsy 12-10 win over the Canterbury Bulldogs.

The Raiders are still considering their options, but could opt to take the early guilty plea simply because of the enormity of the risk of fighting the charge.

Thanks, also just saw it on the footy show. It is bad and deserves a suspension. Is it 5 weeks worse than McGuire's? Not in my opinion, but still deserves maybe 2-3 weeks.

It doesn't look good I agree. The question is the severity of the charge in my mind. If he got seven weeks, that'd be the longest suspension since 2004, they were just saying on The Sunday Footy Show. It is disproportionate. The lack of consistency with what the MRC does is astounding, really.

Seven weeks is insane. Burgess literally does this **** every week. O'Neill was let off with a fine. What the frick.

I’m fine with 5 weeks if that was consistent
As others have raised, the problem is this is no better or worse than McGuire who go a fine
So the consistency is absolutely wild

I think these sorts of incidents SHOULD be heavily punished. But it’s not right to give McGuire $1500 and sit Young for 5 weeks.

Do you think that's the worst possible grading of eye gouge though?

I agree it was grubby but for me there is a fine line between a facial and what he did but a massive leap between a facial and a genuine grade 3 gouge.

Looked a legit gouge to me
As for most severe grading, probably not, but it’s not a low grade either

As said, the punishment to me fits the crime, the problem is some other clown got a fine for what I thought was a similar offence

Steve Linnane got a full season for his on Brandy.
5 weeks is right for this act but as others have said that's not what others have got for the same act if not worse with Maguire hooking his fingers into the eye area getting a slap on the wrist.

Also, just FYI
The grading would normally be 2 weeks with an early plea, he’s copped 50% loading for similar incident in the last two years
So that’s why it’s so high

Aside from my issues with the judiciary’s laughable “similar offences” fiasco, that puts this his grading into a different light
edwahu

Re: Hudson Young facing up to seven weeks on the sideline

Post by edwahu »

That's why I don't see it as a grade 3. He had his fingers together from what I could see and didn't hook them into his eyes.

This would be the other recent precedent
https://www.nrl.com/news/2018/11/07/geo ... eye-gouge/

Linnane was next level and detached Brandy's retina.

Yeah that’s fair, I don’t think Young’s is that different, the intent is there and just dumb luck he wasn’t as effective

But it’s a different committee so not sure how successful we’d be using it as evidence

What was McGuire’s base charge? That’s our grounds for downgrading imo

So we might get down to a grade one and then he misses probably 3 weeks instead of 5.

I’d plead guilty and contest grading. Caps us at 5, gets us a good shout at less

Post by edwahu »

Yeah I would say that's the best strategy. Even Grade 2 would get a couple of weeks less.

Yeah, focus on Burgess tapes, that grubby **** is always doing stuff like this.
