Round 11 2019. North Queensland Cowboys 22 - Canberra Raiders 16. It was a disappointing performance from the Canberra Raiders, probably the worst of the year. The Raiders are seriously affected to injuries to key players and they lost another during the match, with Josh Hodgson leaving the field with a suspected broken thumb. But the Raiders looked flat after two close losses, in intense matches against the top two teams.

More on Round 11: As I saw it

In Round 12, the Canberra Raiders go back on the road and travel to the Sydney Olympic Park for a meeting with the Canterbury Bulldogs. There are a host of changes for the Raiders due to injury and State of Origin duty.

Siliva Havili comes in at No. 9 for the injured Josh Hodgson. Mounties hooker Tom Starling is set to make his debut for the Raiders on the bench. He's been signed as a development player for 2019 and granted dispensation by the NRL to play from outside the top 30 squad.

Aidan Sezer comes in at five eighth to cover Jack Wighton, while Sebastian Kris has been named as starting centre in place of Nick Cotric. Both Wighton and Cotric are on representative duties with the NSW Blues.

Corey Horsburgh replaces Josh Papalii at starting prop, who is on Origin duty for the Queensland Maroons. Joe Tapine will start in the second row, with Hudson Young moving to lock, and Ryan Sutton dropping to the bench. Emre Guler comes into the top 17 on the bench. John Bateman (fractured eye socket) has been named on the extended bench, and will see a Sydney specialist on Friday to determine if he can make an early comeback.

For the Bulldogs, Ofahiki Ogden will start at prop for Dylan Napa, who is on Origin duty, while Raymond Faitala-Mariner has been included on the bench.

Late changes: On Friday, John Bateman was cleared to take his place in the Canberra Raiders team after just three weeks on the sideline with a fractured eye socket. Emre Guler drops out of the top 17, joining Ata Hingano on the extended bench. Royce Hunt and Andre Niko have been omitted from the squad. For the Bulldogs, Lachlan Lewis and Kerrod Holland were cut from the squad on Friday night.

History: The Raiders have won 30 and lost 39 matches against the Canterbury Bulldogs. That’s just a 44 per cent win rate. However, the record has been more even recently, with Canberra winning five of the past 10 clashes - and more positively, four of the past five. The Raiders have a reasonably good record at Sydney Olympic Park, winning five of the 10 matches played at the venue. The clubs have played 33 matches in Sydney, with the Raiders winning just over a third of the games (12). The Raiders won both matches against the Bulldogs last year. The Raiders took the Round 5 clash at Canberra Stadium, 26-10. And then the Green Machine produced one of the most extraordinary comebacks in the club's history in Round 17 at Belmore, winning 32-28.

2018 Round 17 Canberra Raiders V Canterbury Bulldogs

2018 Round 5 Canberra Raiders V Canterbury Bulldogs

Form: Raiders: LWLLL
Bulldogs: WLLWL

The Bulldogs have two recent wins, over the Cowboys and Titans, but fell to the Melbourne Storm in their last outing, 28-6, at Belmore. The Raiders have won just once in their past five games, against the Panthers. They have recent losses against the Sea Eagles, Roosters, Rabbitohs and Cowboys.

Betting: The bookies can't split the teams with both payin $1.90. The Bulldogs still have 1.5 points start in the line betting, but they have firmed from being outsiders at the start of the week.

Stat attack: It is a battle between fifth (Raiders) and last (Bulldogs) on the ladder. Canberra has a six and five record to open the season, while the Bulldogs are three and eight. Canberra has won three of five games played away, while the Bulldogs have won one of five games played at home. The Raiders have won four of five matches against bottom eight teams, while the Bulldogs have lost all six games against top eight opposition.

Canberra ranks fifth in the league in attack, Canterbury dead last. The Raiders have averaged 21 points (3.3 tries) this season, compared with 13 points (2.4 tries) for the Bulldogs. The Raiders' defensive record is slipping, and now ranks third behind the Storm and Rabbitohs - but is still below the 16 point benchmark that premiership contenders strive to achieve. Canberra has conceded 15.5 points (2.5 tries) per game this year, compared with 22.9 points (3.7 tries) for Canterbury.

The Bulldogs complete at 81 per cent, compared with 77 per cent for the Raiders. The Bulldogs also have a slightly better average error count than the Raiders (9-10) - but both rank in the top three teams for least errors conceded. Neither team ranks well in the discipline stakes. The Raiders are second in the league for penalties conceded (eight per game), while the Bulldogs rank sixth (seven per game). The completions and error count don't translate into possession share for the Bulldogs. They rank last in the league for share of the ball (47 per cent), while the Raiders have an average 51 per cent possession share.

The Bulldogs make slightly more runs (179-170), running metres (1565-1524), post contact metres (444-438) and offloads (12-8) per game. However the Raiders make slightly more line breaks (3.4-3) and a lot more tackle breaks (31-21) per game. Both teams are bottom three for try assists (20 each in total for the season), while the Raiders rank second last for line break assists (19 for the season, compared with 25 for the Bulldogs).

The Raiders now rank second in the NRL for kicking metres - which is a huge difference from recent seasons. They average 603 metres from 21 kicks per game, compared with 584 metres from 21 kicks for the Bulldogs. There is little doubt that the Raiders are more aggressive and effective in their kicking game this season... but to some degree the kicking metres are making up for lower running metres gained (with the Raiders now ranked 13th in the league).

According to Fox Sports Lab, the Raiders rank fifth for least running metres conceded (1358 per game), but the Bulldogs concede the most in the league (1550). The Raiders have missed an average of 31 tackles per game, the Bulldogs 35 - but the Bulldogs have the better tackle efficiency rate.

Our tip: The Raiders have not been at their best in attack this season, but it's not too bad... and they've definitely improved the defence. The Bulldogs? Well despite their high completions and low error rates, they've got nothing in attack... and are pretty poor defence as well. Just look at the points differential. The Raiders are +55, the Bulldogs are -110.

However, the Raiders have been decimated by injury and State of Origin duty for this contest. There are six regular first graders unavailable, and six of the best. Josh Hodgson, Joey Leilua and Jordan Rapana are all injured, while Josh Papalii, Jack Wighton and Nick Cotric playing in Origin I. That means the two best spine players will be missing, the forwards leader will be missing and most of the strike in the outside backs will be missing. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs will only be missing Dylan Napa on Origin duty.

In addition, the Raiders recent form line is now actually poorer than the Bulldogs. The Raiders have played very well in some of their past five games, but they haven't come up with the competition points.

It will take a pretty special effort for the Raiders to win this one. The rookies and journeymen will have to have the game of their lives - and the intensity in defence, and organisation in attack, will need to lift considerably on last week. The heart is hoping for a win, but I can't see it. Bulldogs by six.

What they're saying:

Josh Papalii: "We've got a lot of young forwards and a lot of young backs coming through the ranks there with our feeder club Mounties. I'm actually looking forward to watching the boys play this weekend, there's a few missing but I think they'll be alright."

Let's get that swagger back in attitude..

It was way down last week after being up for the competition front runners.

This Dogs side is hot fire garbage tbf and a win is never guaranteed.

Hopefully the boys are fired up...

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Not sure where all the confidence comes from. While it was only a trial, their "spuds" comprehensively outplayed us in that first half. In both 2017 and 2018 they were much better than us in the away games (we were lucky to win that 2018 game). We are missing 6 of our best players responsible for the bulk of our points.

I have zero confidence.

I’m only going because I made a promise to my son that I’d take him weeks ago. If I’m being honest, I’m scared and prepared for the worst.

I'm weirdly convinced we're going to lose but also kind of excited because NEW RAIDERS! Bateman! Sezer!

I'm not gonna lie though - really I'm hoping that Sezer absolutely plays out of his skin.

Ricky Stuart interview on ABC Canberra Grandstand this morning:

Team feeling good, good week, more energy about the preparation this week compared to last after coming off two big games. Good opportunities for the younger players this week, for Corey Horsburgh starting, Tom Starling on the bench.

Horsburgh says he's feeling a bit nervous? Not a bad sign, shows he's caring about how he plays and the result. He's made the transition to the NRL very quickly. He and Hudson Young have done a great job with more senior players unavailable.

When you're missing key players, it is very clear how important they really are. But it is good that the younger players are up against experienced internationals and Origin players. They'll only be better for that. Not concerned about the young players will go, I need the senior players to stand up and take the extra load.

Must be a relief that John Bateman has been cleared to play? He has a big influence on the team despite just having joined the team, he has a big effect on the other players. We need to win tonight. Two competition points would be like getting four given the number of key players unavailable.

Bateman is not that big, how does he have such an impact? I put it down to his character and his desire, size doesn't matter. That's why he's one of the best back rowers in the world. Will make the decision on which position he plays later today.

Dean Pay. Do you enjoy coaching against a good mate like Dean? No, I don't enjoy coaching against close mates, Dean and Craig Bellamy. I want to win against them, just as much as they want to win against me. Will have a beer after the game.
