Canberra Raiders rewarded with representative honours

Jarrod Croker for NSW right centre?

NRL.com has a NSW team predictor.
https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/05/19/cho ... in-game-1/

Jarrod Croker is currently just ahead of Josh Morris at right centre in a close race. Wighton and Cotric also mentioned but looking like Croker the popular choice among NRL fans. Good to see him getting recongised even though media commentators don't.

I think even quite a few non-Raiders fans are starting to get surprised by how desperate the Sydney media and Blues selectors seem to be to pick anyone but him. Especially when it's apparent the guy is going to end up the all-time leading pointscorer.

No chance. If Mitchell was injured it would be different.

I dont think he'll get picked
In fact i think they'd pick Cotric at centre before him, whether that's fair and right, im undecided.

I'd prefer Wighton over Croker or Cotric. Cotric should be pencilled in for a wing position anyway.

After last night's game, Cotric will get picked before Croker does.

If Cotric could put in another effort like that then he'd be a real show. We're assuming they haven't already picked the side and current form will count.

Plenty of top pointscorers have never got much of a look in at Origin. El Masri, Taylor, Burt, Gordon.

I just don't agree. I think he's plenty good enough for Origin.

God, I remember when Hodkinson got picked. As a specialist goal kicker. When he was kicking at 57%. Yeah.

What does "good enough for Origin" mean anyway? Because there are way worse players than Croker who have played it.

Cotric will make it eventually if he keeps playing there for us. He'll make it as a winger too, although I think centre is better suited given his relative lack of pace.

Croker doesn't have enough in his game at Origin level, and still has games where he's make to look silly in defence.

Listening to Brad Fittler on The Sunday Footy Show, no Raiders are being picked. Says the Raiders defence around the edges is suspect.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Yes but in no way shape or form is Jarrod Croker responsible for any of this now or at any time in the past.

Blame the guys playing on his inside and outside over the last decade because Jarrod isn't the common denominator here ok.

Konrad Hurrell would beg to differ regarding Crokers defensive issues in seasons past, he has well and truly fixed that and deserves a go

I dont think i'd pick Croker, simply because as a sports fan im ageist. And given age, id already go Cotric over him just because that guy could be a 7-10 year stalwart of the team... but that's my hang ups.
I will say this, the idea that Croker isnt good enough for Origin is an out and out joke, he may never play origin footy but there have been FAR worst footballers to don a origin jersey than Croker.

FAR worse.

Agree - there have just always been better options at left centre. Doesn't mean he couldn't give it a good go given the chance. I'd take Croker over Steve "the human hurdle" Turner any day.

Yeah i think Centre has been a pretty competitive field in Croker's time. If he got picked i bet he'd be really good. This wouldnt be Turner/Merritt situation. I dont think it'd be a Adam Mogg situation either. But he'd do his job and do it well.. but it's just tough, like i said, i've seen one game of Cotric at centre in FG and id already have my eyes on that if i were Fittler.

Yeah picking Croker for Origin suddenly at right centre when he's a career left centre when you know Cotric is twice the size, younger and just played a good game (mind you he needs a few more but he was a gun winger too) there and was a junior right centre just doesn't make sense.

Size does matter a but more in origin because everyone is offside and bigger and the gang tackling is fiercer. It's not the be all and end all but I'd see Cotric as just a likely to bust an origin game open on the right side and handle whatever came his way defensively.

I don't think anyone in the team (who can) deserves to be picked for NSW except for maybe Wighton for a bench position.

Funny thing is that at the start of the season, I was really hanging onto Cotric getting into the NSW team as my only shimmer hope for anything positive for this season. And while he hasn't been amazing and will unlikely be picked, here we are in pretty good form so far!

Don’t know if this is true actually. Pretty sure Daley picked Jennings from reserve grade and Dugan a couple of weeks after he returned from an injury requiring hospitalisation. And neither played well.

I reckon there were a few times when there was no clear choice and Croker was in excellent form but not even considered.

I think Croker has a bad reputation for defensive issues that occurred years ago and have since been fixed. If he isn't picked this year with all the injuries, it's unlikely that he will ever get a chance.

Update on the poll with 16,300 votes in. Interesting there are 3 Raiders players accounting for 40% of the vote.

Croker 22%
Morris 20%
Roberts 18%
Ramien 16%
Wighton 9%
Cotric 9%
Aubusson 6%

What these figures tell us is you can lock in Dugan for the spot.

This exact issue has had me pondering the left side/right side player thing. It is interesting that it seems those specialist threequarters are so specific to their role these days that changing them to the other side of the field could be a disaster in the way they pass, or read the defence or even hold the footy (less of an issue on say a fullback like Turbo on the wing). And those margins for error are smaller at that level. I know Cotric did it reasonably well on the weekend but the caveat there was his junior footy was played there so not totally out of his comfort zone on that side.

I agree with BadnMean in that in Origin size is important and JC isn't a particularly big player in that position. They either want a body or the fastest player on the field or at least a combo and he's neither. Plus his record on more physical players isn't flash which may raise concerns for the selectors. I do however think he could do a job for NSW at left centre (undecided on right centre), but until 2016 he was nowhere near close to Origin standard. He improved a lot in a short space of time but by then his card either may have been marked or like Pigman has alluded to, NSW wanted to build a long term squad and there is a perception that Croker is older than he is because of how long he has been in 1st grade.
We continue to **** about with blokes that are part of some fraternity. It's infuriating.

I have noticed a lot of people on social media are calling for Croker for that centre position (and even more for Crocker)
When Latrell went down injured I thought that was Croker's opportunity to claim a spot in left centre, but Latrell's injury didn't keep him down and he bounced back. I didn't see the bronco's/roosters game so I don't know how much that injury has effected Mitchell, but leading up to that he was in career best form and has a hold on that position. I hope to see Croker don a Blue's jersey, even if it's just once, as that's his only concerning hurdle when it comes to him receiving a paid testimonial.

Gut feeling is that Cotric and Wighton would probably be better served for right centre for reasons mentioned.
Although knowing NSW Selectors they'll put Aubuson there.
