Mine too, boney M. I remember when we signed him in 92, I was like " who the hell is that?". We all soon learned.

Pongia was a pioneer for many budding NZ players.

Really professional and reliable in his time here are my memories from childhood. Left the club in an unofficial trade for Vainikolo from memory. We ended up getting the short end of the stick on that deal.

RIP.

Canberra Raiders great Quentin Pongia loses cancer battle

Ricky Stuart says the former Canberra Raiders enforcer was the toughest man he ever played alongside, bar none.

"At the moment, mate, I'm shattered," Brett Mullins said. "Having a beer with Brett Hetherington, Luke Davico, and sharing happy moments of the Q. More tears than words at this stage. Hard, tough man. Better man than player. Gone way too early."

Too true.

Quentin Pongia: Tim Sheens on how late hardman saved Canberra Raiders dynasty

Master coach Tim Sheens still remembers the day he brought Quentin Pongia into big time rugby league at the Canberra Raiders in 1993.

“I went all the way down to a little town at the bottom of the south island of New Zealand to sign him - it was the last stop before Antartica and was full of tough men - and ‘Q’ certainly qualified for that title.

Very sad news :(

As a young Raiders fan in NZ, Quentin Pongia and Ruben Wiki were naturally 2 of my favourite players, and I was lucky enough to get the chance to meet them at a Kiwis training session in Christchurch in 1996. Got them both to sign my old Video Ezy jersey and a small notebook, and still have both to this day.

Bradley Clyde pays emotional tribute to former Canberra Raiders teammate Quentin Pongia

Former Canberra forward Bradley Clyde has paid an emotional tribute to fellow ex-Raider Quentin Pongia following his death last week.

“I remember when Tim Sheens went over to New Zealand to find some forwards to replace Glenn Lazarus — and he came back with John Lomax and also Quentin Pongia and by God, they made an impact.”

John Lomax remembers his Canberra Raiders teammate Quentin Pongia

John Lomax recalls the day he last visited his good mate, Quentin Pongia.

"When I caught up with him, I did say to him 'mate, I didn't know how to handle coming to see you given the state you're in'," Lomax said. "He just said 'mate, I'm just glad to see you. I don't want to talk about myself, I want to talk about the good times we had when we went on tour and when we played footy together, I'm just happy to see you'.
