Bob Hawke dies at the age of 89

Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke has died, aged 89, his wife Blanche d'Alpuget has confirmed.

"Today we lost Bob Hawke, a great Australian – many would say the greatest Australian of the post-war era," she said in a statement.

"He died peacefully at home at the age of 89 years. I and Bob’s children, Sue, Stephen, Rosslyn and stepson, Louis, and his grandchildren, will hold a private funeral."

He was a guy well respected on both sides of politics. Will go down as one of the great PM's of Australia.

Ricky Stuart and the Canberra Raiders remember Bob Hawke

When the late Bob Hawke was Prime Minister, he doubled as the Canberra Raiders' No. 1 ticket holder. And having the Prime Minister in the corner of a club still finding its way around the big smoke was a huge coup.

"For us, we just felt Bob was one of us. It was 'Mr Hawke', our Prime Minister. But to us, it was 'G'day Bob', and he wouldn't want it any other way," Ricky Stuart said.

History will reflect he was absolutely one of our greatest Prime Ministers. Contemporary politics certainly misses the vision and plan that a person like he had for Australia.

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart proudly reflects on happy memories of Bob Hawke

It was 30 years ago but Ricky Stuart remembers his Bob Hawke moment like it was yesterday.

"After the 89 grand final we were all invited back to The Lodge for a massive big BBQ - they had a marquee tent out and the whole lot," Stuart said. "I was talking to Bob - having a beer with him and Steve Walters walked past and started to fall into the conversation, and he said, 'Gee, Hazel must have been busy last night mate, it's amazing what she has put on here for us today'."
