Canberra Raiders looking to re-sign Jordan Rapana

Canberra Raiders look to re-sign Jordan Rapana

The Canberra Raiders have set their sights on Jordan Rapana's signature as the off-contract winger braces for a stint on the sideline. Rapana is unlikely to be fit for Saturday's clash with the Rabbitohs after suffering a suspected PCL injury against the Roosters.

"It's lucky we had Bails [Simonsson] there on the bench [against the Roosters] I guess, but it would have been nice to use him differently," Raiders captain Jarrod Croker said.

They must be trying to low-ball him while he's injured.

Is a PCL what that used to refer to as MCL? Or something altogether different?

Posterior cruciate is different to medial cruciate ligament. PCL stops the knee going backwards in a way it shouldn't. Medial sideways. Anterior forwards. That's my limited medical understanding anyway!

Time off is similar between a PCL and MCL though right? 4-6 weeks with the 6 weeks being more likely.

No doubt Raps is a great player and has a couple of good years left in him but I wouldn’t be breaking the bank to keep him. Make him a good fair offer and see where it lands. I wouldn’t go more than 2 years.

James Hooper reported on Big League Wrap tonight on Fox League that it is confirmed as a PCL and the club is hoping for a three to four weeks recovery period.

Bad the timing for the injury. 😔 I hope the club re-signs him for a couple of seasons. He's a massive contributor to this team.

Rapa is one of the best wingers in the world. When he is not there we are a different side and not in a good way in terms of go forward. Very safe under the high ball and will turn and chase break throughs. Unfortunately a try saving tackle caused a rib injury and now he also has a knee injury. I hope they both heal up over the next month or so. It would be a minimum 2 years contract with a year option for mine. Every player in the team would support it I reckon.

Must re-sign, two year deal would be good. Wingers are much more important in the modern game than historically. They start your sets, defuse bombs, finish tries.

I'm confident the deal will get done. I reckon Rapana wants to stay in Canberra and Raiders will want to keep him.

It's a no brainer. He's a brilliant winger and embodies the kind of professionalism and commitment on and off the field, that wins premierships.

Three year deal for mine. 30 at the end of the year so I don't see an issue with him keeping on till 32.

I think the raiders have been guilty in the past of undertaking contract negotiations with the heart and not the head. Guys offered long deals on over the odds dollars. Raps has been brilliant but injuries are starting to catch up and he will start to slow. It’s easier to find a good winger than a good half - I’d be considering all options carefully. If we can get him at a good price grab him but if there is a chance to free up big cash I would like to see them think carefully about that option.

For some perspective he has missed 5 games over the past 3 and a bit years before this injury.

He does like us and we do like him but that’s the wrong criteria PJ. The club needs to give serious consideration to what we can expect to get from him in the next 1, 2 and 3 years and what dollar value that is worth.

Consideration also needs to be given to the opportunity cost of what you miss out on if you tie that money up in a winger. I would expect team balance, culture, what Raps brings to the club beyond footy would all be part of the conversation. If it stacks up then sign him. If it doesn’t I’d support the clubs decision to move him on.

These aren’t easy calls to make but you would hope they are looked at from all angles and not just based on whether there is a tinder style like match or whether the player has performed in the past. If that is our only criteria we would still have Mal, Laurie and others on the payroll.

2 year deal plus a 3rd year deal optional in The GH's favour.

hope so but it does seem to have taken a long time, he's only got around 4/5 months of his contract remaining and there was talk 6 months or so ago when he got injured playing for the kiwis that we wanted to negotiate a contract extension with him, What's the hold up? this will likely be his last decent contract and considering he missed out on a fair bit of his earning potential when he went on his Mormon mission etc it would be totally understandable for him to be holding out for a really good final deal.

All contracts should have GH clause for every year. Come to think of it there should be a clause tha the GH decides on a weekly basis which players will remain contracted. We get 2 trades a week just like in Supercoach.

Jordan Rapana is one of the very best wingers in world rugby league..

He's a current international, we'd be crazy not to re-sign him..

Don't let a couple of injuries or his age haze your judgement...

Bunch of cowards.

Obviously you haven't played Supercoach before. We get to replace them with a player of equal or lesser $$ value. By the end of the season our squad will more resemble the Roosters current one.
