I see no value in this and nothing that makes it "magic".

The "magic" of the 9s tournament is that there is a lot more on for the fans that go (or so i hear) AND for the fans back at home. 2 days sitting in front of the tv watching all games, not changing the channel , different kind of game too compared to an 80min game

There is nothing special here, I presume some clubs like ours are doing a fan thing but that is with a limited number of fans- not open for as many that can possibly come to come etc and not an official part of the weekend.

There is no dinner or something on for all the captains to raise money for charity. Apart from tonights game I dont think there is any charity thing at all.

The clubs wont even be mingling or seeing each other unless they play on the same day. Cronulla will fly home tomorrow, magic weekend done and dusted before the weekend begins.

I honestly cant see the "magical" bit in the "magic" weekend

The NRL have really missed the point here

If you have to have a game on it’s own it needs to be a donkeys game.
Yeah and it was even cheap tickets for last night most of the tickets were 10 bucks

It looks pretty shabby. The events in the lead up have been pretty low key as well. For the Auckland Nines, the captains and teams of every club appeared in the main city square at a lunch time launch event. There was a whole day of activities, and the teams made appearances and did signing sessions, photo sessions etc etc. Every club had a public appearance at a local junior club, with that event open to the public. There was a gala launch on one evening, for the VIPs and that was broadcast. The clubs ran open training sessions.

As far as I can see, all that's been done for Magic Round is the kick for a million, where the teams were represented by former players (the Raiders sent Terry Campese). The teams clearly are not ever going to be in the one place at the one time... which is why Bolton couldn't address the 16 captains as part of his punishment for his off field indiscretions. None of the things that made the Nines a "festival" appear to be happening.

It is sort of typical NRL. No idea how to run such an event. No idea how to price such an event.
A lot comes back to keeping the Thursday night game. Its just like any other stand alone Thursday game. One match, 2 sets of fans etc. In isolation it was a very good crowd for a Thursday. Titans only get a third of that if it was at Robina stadium. But it still lacks an 'magic' feel. Overall it makes it a dud start to the weekend which isn't what you want.

Tonight should see a totally different atmosphere.

The TV networks are still holding the game to ransom to their own ultimate detriment. Would have been much easier to have 3 Sunday games and that would have made Friday, Saturday or Sunday a good day out for fans.

Hopefully tonight is a better show.

There's certainly a lot of people I know who follow league who have no idea what magic round is, why all games are being played in Brisbane or what the point of this is and that shows how badly the NRL have gone at promoting it. The ticket pricing is clearly an issue. Surely the goal should be to fill stadiums, create the atmosphere and make it something people want to get around in the future!

For something like this to work you would need a festival atmosphere in a city for the weekend so there were more draw cards than just the football. Bands playing, entertainment in outdoor areas, food markets etc. Not sure what if anything like that is happening so would be good to hear from anyone who is up there about what is happening.

That is my biggest concern. We already have enough injuries. I’m more than happy to take a loss this week for no injuries.

Yes it could. There’ll be a big crowd, but it’s clear they’re not interested in watching this match.

This is the downside to a game in a area where 99% of people don't care

What is the magic? And i am being serious.
All i can see that is different is all games are at the one venue

Nothing else seems to be different and worth the travel and cost

I was in Caxton St this afternoon, and the atmosphere was good in the pubs and on the street. But not much different to a regular Broncos game day. The main difference was a bigger variety of jerseys. It’ll be a big crowd tonight. It’ll be interesting to see how much of the stadium is filled the course of tomorrow’s triple header. My bet is people will attend their own match and be in the pubs before and after while other games run.

You poor bugger. Must have been in your army days. Wattle Grove or Moorebank?
I watched Moorebank play a league game from sporties once. Long time ago.
Bloody feral place.

Although, I did enjoy watching grass roots rugby league.

No random bloke in a Souths jumper will ever outdo the fat bloke in a Raiders Phone Zone jumper still hanging around the Tuggeranong Hyperdome (edit Southpoint)

I still feel for the day in the mid 2000s where Rebel Hyperdome were trying to sell off racks of Raiders jumpers for $20 each and I saw people buying full price Roosters and Broncos jerseys. Bad days.

Some pretty nasty knee and ankle injuries in the Broncos/Eagles game too.

Magic round is kind of a cool idea. I just don't know if its worth the effort. I would prefer they put their effort into promoting the game in areas where it was most welcome. A magic round in PNG or something like that would be wild.

Hey! I still wear a Fone Zone all-weather jacket. Wore it yesterday to Southpoint, in fact.

I'm not buying a replacement until they make one that's as good as that old thing.
Some people talk about the weather. Others do something about it.

Anyone else watching the pre game for the Knight - Dogs game? Kickoff in 6 mins and there’s no one in the crowd. Looks like a reserve grade crowd.
