Round 7 2019. Manly Sea Eagles 24 - Canberra Raiders 20. It was ultimately a disappointing performance from the Canberra Raiders - given the high standards of the opening six rounds and given the bright start, which saw the Raiders go to an early 12-0 lead.
The Raiders were disrupted by the loss of Jordan Rapana, but the Manly Sea Eagles were more seriously disrupted by the loss of half back Daly Cherry-Evans early in the second half. Most expected the Raiders would go on to win, but the remaining Sea Eagles had other ideas. The Sea Eagles produced off load after off load - and the Raiders' defence was unable to stop the second phase play. The Raiders were also ill disciplined, and gave away far too many penalties - and that just added to the Sea Eagles' momentum.
More on Round 7: As I saw it
In Round 8, the Raiders are again on the road, taking their home game against the Penrith Panthers to Wagga Wagga. Canberra Raiders winger Jordan Rapana has been ruled out for two to three weeks with a rib injury, and is replaced by Bailey Simonsson. Hudson Young and Corey Horsburgh return to the top 17 on the bench, after strong performances for Mounties against the Sea Eagles on Sunday. The Panthers have named an unchanged top 17.
Late changes: Aidan Sezer and Jack Murchie were cut from the Raiders squad on Friday, while the Panthers omitted Tyrell Fuimaono and Dylan Edwards.
Milestones: Canberra Raiders centre Joey Leilua will play his 200th NRL match on Saturday. Jarrod Croker is three tries away from equaling Jason Croker's all time club record for most tries (120).
History: The Raiders have won 36 matches against the Penrith Panthers, lost 38 and drawn one. Canberra has won four of the past 10 clashes between the clubs, but have lost the past four matches straight. The Raiders lost the first clash between the teams in 2017 at Bathurst, after leading 20-12 with less than two minutes remaining - conceding two rapid fire tries. The Raiders also lost narrowly in Round 24 2017, 24-20. In Round 14 last year at Canberra Stadium, the Raiders led 22-16 with just over five minutes remaining. A Panthers try leveled the match, and a Nathan Cleary field goal with less than two minutes remaining delivered a 23-22 win for the visitors. That was followed by a 40-31 loss for the Raiders at Penrith in Round 21.
2018 Round 21 Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers
2018 Round 14 Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers
The two teams have never played an NRL match at Wagga. The Raiders played a Panasonic Cup match against the Bulldogs in at Eric Weissell Oval in Wagga in 1985, losing 16-6. The Raiders last played a trial match at McDonalds Park in 2012, winning 16-14.
Form: Raiders: WWWWL
Panthers: LWLLL
The Panthers have won just once in their past five games, a one point win over the Wests Tigers in Round 4. They have lost their past three matches by six points or less, to the Titans (30-24), Sharks (24-20) and Rabbitohs (22-18).
Betting: The Raiders are $1.62 favourites in the match, while the Panthers are paying $2.30. The Panthers have 3.5 points start in the line betting. The Raiders have firmed as favourites over the week.
Stat attack: The Raiders are placed fourth on the ladder, the Panthers in 14th. Canberra has a five and two record to open the season, while the Panthers are two and five. Canberra has won two of three games played away from Canberra Stadium, while the Panthers have won one of three games played away. Four of the Raiders' five wins have been against bottom eight teams, while the Panthers have won once from four games against top eight opposition.
The Raiders have the better attacking and defensive record so far this season. The Raiders have averaged 20.4 points (3.4 tries) per match, compared with 14.4 (2.3 tries) for the Panthers. After the four tries to three loss to the Sea Eagles, the Raiders have the second best defensive record in the competition, behind the Storm. The have conceded an average of just under 13 points (2.3 tries) per match. The Panthers have conceded over 21 points (3.7 tries) per match.
The Raiders have the better average completion rate of the two teams (75 per cent, Panthers 68 per cent). The Panthers produce more errors per game (13-10), but have been slightly more disciplined - with the Raiders conceding eight penalties per game on average, the Panthers seven. The Raiders have more effectively controlled possession (53 per cent share, compared with 47 per cent for the Panthers) - and have the highest average possession share of any team.
There is not much difference between the two teams in terms of runs per game (Raiders 171, Panthers 168), but the Raiders have produced more running metres (Raiders 1556, Panthers 1446, ranking last in the NRL). The Raiders have fallen down the rankings for post contact metres. They now rank seventh, the Panthers sixth, with both teams averaging around 452 metres per game. The Raiders rank fourth for kick return metres (198 per game), the Panthers seventh (178). Canberra relies heavily on dummy half runs (17 per game) ranking first in the competition (Penrith just seven).
Canberra ranks third for tackle breaks (34 per game), while the Panthers rank 14th (23). Canberra is middle of the pack for line breaks (3.3 per game) and offloads (8.7 per game) - the Panthers rank bottom three in the league in both departments (2.6 line breaks and 6.7 offloads).
According to Fox Sports Lab, only the Storm concede fewer running metres than the Raiders (1313 per game). However, the Panthers rank third (1324 running metres conceded per game). The Raiders have missed an average of 31 tackles per game, the Panthers 40 - with the Raiders having a slightly better tackle efficiency rate.
Our tip: This is a danger game for the Green Machine. For a start, the Raiders' recent history against the Panthers has involved a whole world of pain. The Panthers play a style of attacking football that the Raiders somehow find difficult to contain. Penrith probably played their best game of the season last week, despite the loss to the Rabbitohs, and their attack showed signs of getting back to their best. The Raiders will need to significantly improve their discipline and reduce their error count this week - as no team can afford to give the Panthers too much ball.
The other reason for concern is that the Raiders looked tired in the latter stages of the win over the Broncos in Round 6 - and struggled to contain the second phase play of the Sea Eagles last week. The Raiders have been playing a high intensity brand of football this season, in both attack and defence. But it is taxing, and hopefully, they'll be well rested this week - and can get their defence back in order. If the Raiders play to their potential, however, they should be too strong for Penrith. Raiders by four.
What they're saying:
John Bateman: "We need to get a win and we need to bounce back from this one, and that's what it's all about. The better teams do that, the better teams dig themselves out of a loss and have a reaction. That's what we need to do. We've got a great team in there, we've had two losses now but don't say we're going to start falling off now. We know what we're about, we know what we can do."

Re: 2019 Rd 8 V Panthers: Game Day
Today we get to see how much Ricky has progressed as a coach. Given it took him 5 yrs to address the defence issues I have grave concerns about his capacity to fix the many deficiencies (defence, discipline, patience, ball control, line speed, set-plays, selfish plays etc) laid bare in last week's loss. The four point deficit was not a true reflection on how badly the Raiders played. It still amazes me that after such a long tenure Ricky has still not developed a suite of set plays. The Raider's attack last week in the red-zone was piss-poor as it usually is. If we win today, it's going to be on the back of some individual brilliance. After today, the going get really tough so a win here is crucial!
It's a simple game; tackle, back-up, pass, hold the ball! What did I say? "Hold the bloody ball!!"

A big match, 3rd spot on the line and with a couple of form teams coming up it’d be a nice one to win. I’m nervous, as always, but Penrith make me more nervous. We need to start well defensively.

We will need close to 80mins of good football to get the job done today.
If we are a bit off, or decide to go missing in the usual places (red zone, line speed, poor contact in tackles leading to offloads) Penrith will spank us. Their arrow is pointing up

Not confident with Oldfield at centre.
No Rapana, no BJ. There goes our X Factor. There goes our strike power. Lord knows our spine has zero power

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Geez, on paper that Panthers team should beat us by a lot. Their halves alone are way above ours

The Penrith Panthers run out of their shed... Now David Barnhill, Viking Ambassador for the game is about to start the Viking Clap. And now the Raiders are out on the field.

Our right edge defense is Williams, Oldfield and Simonsen
