Our start is vital here, we need to nullify Klemmer.

I would start with Papa and Sia. And would rather have Redhorse starting at lock with Sutton off the bench.

We need to get on top of the Knights from the get go...

Surely they won't run out like that..

#13 Ryan Sutton ??

Thoughts on Lui starting, Sutton at lock and Sia on the bench ?!
Not a fan of Lui starting.
Sutton is a strange one. Given how little game time he's been getting I would have gone with someone else, or started him at prop with someone else at lock. He was fine in defence and seems to find his front in what little we've seen in round 1 and 2.
How big a role he plays really depends when Hudson-Young comes on as you'd assume Bateman shifts in when he does.

My guess is J.Bateman will start at lock, Young will start on an edge.

Disappointing to see Bateman moved. Stuart said 4 weeks ago that he doesn’t want to be moving Bateman around and wants him to play one position and settle in there. Classic Stuart say one thing and do the other.

With Sutton starting and losing the fitness of Bateman in the middle, the Knights forward pack with Pearce are going to run inside out plays all day and tear us a new one. Bateman in the middle has been a huge part of our defensive resurgence!

I’m changing my tips unfortunately, Raiders to lose by 12

Anyone see Hudson Young play for the Mounties? Is he good?

Saw that he already has 2 NSW Cup TOTW nominations...

He was very good v Newton on Saturday. Got footwork and a late offload. Looks pretty skilful. Albeit in Reserve grade. Brad Abbey looks good in reserve grade too. Hope he kills it.

Though we did lack go forward early vs Storm.
I have a niggling feeling that he won't actually start at lock.
Im not sure TBH. I think Sia off the bench has been huge. It also keeps the experience split. I can see us running out that way. I wouldnt do it, but I think Ricky will

He was the man of the match for mine. He's impressed me in every trial match as well, in the preseason. He's come on massively over the off season. Very well deserved debut. It's also a clear indication that the coach is rewarding form, and form alone.

Wouldn't surprise if the debutant starts in the second row, with Bateman back to lock and Sutton back to the bench.

Agree.

Papa, Whitehead and Hodgo are the only ones playing in their chosen spots. As we get closer to kickoff Stick would have had second thoughts on who starts and who his bench will be.

Still..great to see our coach picking in form players and once again congrats to HYoung.

And may I add it's important we get the balance of our bench right.

I've banged on about the start, it needs to be full bore, ripping into them but I don't want a lull in proceedings when Papa, Sia and co come off for a rest.

Klemmer, Gavet have been good over the first few weeks. We need to be at our very best early.

I think if Stick intended on playing John Bateman on the edge for 80 minutes we'd have seen Luke Bateman or another middle into the side.

I don't think there's any smokescreen re: Bateman starting in 2nd row... I expect him to play the first 20min or so there and then shift to lock for Hudson Young. No way would Ricky play him for 80min on debut. Sutton will probably play those first 20min or so at lock and then go to the bench when Bateman shifts back there. But it's definitely more likely that there will be a change to starting middles (ie Lui or Sutton) than Bateman starting in 2nd row imo

Hudson Young to make Canberra Raiders debut

Rookie back-rower Hudson Young has been named on Canberra's bench for their match against the Newcastle Knights on Friday, while John Bateman shifts to the second row in place of the injured Joe Tapine.

"You need to go into the game and you need to win your individual battles. That’s what everyone will be going out to do this week," Bateman said. "I’ve played most of my career at back-row and on the right side as well. It’s a big loss for us, obviously with Joe going for scans on his hand. I’m looking forward to playing that position."

Fiery Canberra Raiders redhead Corey Horsburgh harnessing the hate

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has pulled Corey Horsburgh aside in a bid to help the youngster rein in the aggression which can sometimes counter exactly what he is trying to do.

"Still controlling my anger, it gets to me sometimes," Horsburgh said. "I’m getting better at it. I’ve been better at it this year, but it gets the better of me sometimes. I just get a bit passionate, I want to get the team up and sometimes it doesn’t go that way.

Very happy to see horse and young jump lateman in the pecking order, good signs from Ricky, although I would hope he a straight swap for Tapine come kickoff.

Happy to see Young on the bench. Watching juniors come through is always good.

I think Sia will start at 13 and Bateman will be on the right edge. Sutton will move back to the bench as part of the frontrow rotation.

I noticed Emre is on the bench for Mounties

Given the team lists I defintely think we should be using our outside backs in attack. We have a distinct advantage their, especially on the right side.

I wouldnt be surprised if this happens but I don't mind the starting lineup as it is. Play Sutton for 15-20min, bring in Soliola, Lui for 20-25min then bring in Young with Bateman to the middle. I would like to see Papalii playing a long stint before having a break, maybe first 40min and then last 15-20. He's capable of big minutes. Then we'd have Horsburgh and Havili coming on to the field in the second half. I reckon that kind of rotation would allow for a better balance.

I've been really drunk both games... Can't remember how Sutton has been playing? Is he good enough to keep others out?
Also looks to be the end of L Bateman and for whatever reason Guler as well.

Combined 28 mins 11 runs for 70 odd metres, 15 tackles

Meh.

I actually quite like the side as named, we lacked a bit of size/power early on against Melbourne so having a bigger lock for the first 20-30 should help before Bateman moves there to keep things tight once the game opens up.
I also want to see more of Sutton so we can get a gauge on him

VIDEO: Hear from Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart, John Bateman and Sia Soliola about the Green Machine's upcoming clash against the Newcastle Knights

The Canberra Raiders hope Joe Tapine could be sidelined for just one week - after scans revealed his thumb injury is not as bad as first thought. John Bateman will fill Tapine's place in the second row for Friday's clash against the Knights, opening the door for Ryan Sutton to come into the starting side, WIN News Canberra reports.

That's what i thought...cheers
Also very hazy memory but the Storm seemed like they could be penalised for every tackle.. The holding and wrestling seemed to be worse than usual. Maybe i was just looking through one eye?
