Round 1 2019. Canberra Raiders 21 - Gold Coast Titans 0. It was the sort of tough win in tough conditions that every Raiders fan - and no doubt Raiders coach Ricky Stuart - had been hoping for in Round 1. There was no hint of the Round 1 performance of 2018 against the Titans, when the Raiders conceded a big lead, suffering a last gasp, narrow loss. Most of the match was played in a monsoon. There is no doubt that the Titans were impacted by the loss of Ashley Taylor prior to the match - and Tyrone Roberts early in the match. But Canberra's more mobile forward pack contained the much bigger Titans forwards.

The Raiders' defence refused to concede a single point, the first time since Round 19 of 2013. And the Raiders showed the results of their work on game management. There were four forced line drop outs. And in the final stages, a field goal, to take the lead to 19 points - taking the match completely out of reach of the Titans.

More on Round 1: As I saw it

In Round 2, the Raiders play their first home match of the season - and this clash, against the Melbourne Storm, will be a real litmus test for the Green Machine. The Raiders have been boosted by the early return of winger Jordan Rapana - who had been expected to miss the opening month or two of the season. He replaces Bailey Simonsson, who drops to the reserves list. Dunamis Lui has been named at starting prop, with Sia Soliola on the bench - consistent with the late change in Round 1.

The Melbourne Storm has named an unchanged starting team. Tom Eisenhuth, recovering from surgery (fractured larynx) has dropped off the interchange bench. Pat Kaufusi, Albert Vete, Marion Seve, Ryan Papenhuyzen and Billy Waters have been added to the squad that turned out against the Broncos.

Late changes: The Canberra Raiders omitted Sam Williams and Jack Murchie from their extended squad on Thursday evening, while JJ Collins and Bailey Simonsson remained on the extended bench. Billy Walters and Albert Vete were cut from the Storm squad of 21 24 hours before kick off.

Milestones: Canberra Raiders winger Nick Cotric, still aged just 20, will play his 50th NRL game. He debuted at the start of 2017, taking out the NRL Rookie of the Year award. Siliva Havili will play his 50th NRL match.

History: The Raiders have won only 11 of 41 matches against the Melbourne Storm, for a 27 per cent win rate. Canberra has won three of the past 10 clashes between the clubs, and have lost the past four matches straight. They narrowly lost the Preliminary Final in 2016, 14-12, in Melbourne - and lost both contests in 2017. It was just a six point margin at Canberra Stadium in the first of those matches, but a 32-6 blow out in Melbourne, in the final round of 2017. The only match played in 2018 was a 44-10 drubbing for the Raiders in Melbourne.

2018 Round 20 Canberra Raiders V Melbourne Storm

Canberra has won just seven of 20 matches the clubs have played at the Canberra Stadium. Canberra has had a LWLWL record in the past five clashes at the venue. The last win against the Storm in Canberra in Round 23 of 2015 was one of the club's best performances in many years.

2016 Round 23 Canberra Raiders V Melbourne Storm

Form: Raiders: LWWLW
Storm: LWWLW

The Melbourne Storm played the season opener against the Brisbane Broncos in Melbourne and were dominant, particularly in the first half. The Broncos did well to hold the Storm to a 22-12 scoreline. With the retirement of Billy Slater, Cameron Smith is the last of the "big three" remaining - but the Melbourne production line keeps on delivering under the tutlage of coach Craig Bellamy. Whoever Bellamy brings into the team, players seem to just slot in to his systems. They’re always methodical and relentless.

Betting: The Storm are firm $1.65 favourites in the match, with the Raiders paying $2.30. The Raiders have a 3.5 points start in the line betting. The Raiders have firmed slightly in the betting over the course of the week.

Stat attack: After one round, the Raiders are placed second and the Storm are placed fifth - on the basis of points differential. It's unusual... but the Raiders go into the match with the better defensive record, with both teams line ball in attack. But those numbers don't count for anything really.

The size of the Raiders' challenge in this game is better reflected in the 2018 ladder, with the Storm finishing second, narrowly missing the minor premiership on points differential. They were the losing Grand Finalists. The Raiders finished 10th, five wins away from the top eight. That is quite a gulf. Canberra had the second best attack in the competition in 2018, averaging 23 points per match (the Storm 21). But the Storm had the second best defence, conceding just 15 points on average per game (the Raiders 22). This contest will give us a much better feel about how far the Raiders have come in the off season.

Our tip: The Raiders new spine was a success last week - with Josh Hodgson having an outstanding game, and Jack Wighton performing well in his new role at five eighth. But now they face a Melbourne Storm spine that includes Cameron Smith and Cameron Munster. Jahrome Hughes really produced the goods last week after taking over Billy Slater's No. 1 jersey. That's one intriguing aspect to this match up. The other is the clash in the forwards.

The Raiders newly mobile forward pack - led by Josh Papalii, Sia Soliola and John Bateman - stopped the momentum of the big Titans forward pack last Sunday. They'll now have the challenge of getting on top of the Melbourne forwards, including the likes of the Bromwich brothers, Felise Kaufusi and Nelson Asofa-Solomona. That's a tough task.

One big plus for Canberra is the return of Jordan Rapana. If the Raiders are to win, they'll need to repeat the defensive effort and game management of Round 1. But it's a very tall order, given that Melbourne probably produced the best performance in the competition last week - and the Raiders have just a five day turnaround, compared with an eight day turnaround for the Storm. I think that tips the balance in favour of Melbourne. Storm by four.

What they're saying:

Jack Wighton on his move to five eighth: "I had a full pre-season there and that really helps. I’ve got good players around me and I’ve got some good advice. I’ve done a lot of practice on my kicking game and I think it showed [against the Titans], so I was happy with the start. We’ll move onto the next job now. We’ve only got a five-day turnaround. Short turnaround, coming up against a class team, it’ll be a good test."

John Bateman on his impressive NRL debut: "You're not human if you don't think negative stuff. We've all got stuff in the back of our head but I was confident in myself. I know what I'm capable of to go out there and do it but until you actually do it it’s a whole different story. I just went out there to play my game and kept it as simple as I could. That's where I get my confidence from really."

I think rapana is the smokescreen, give him another week, and the co captains both saying he doesn't train well is a kick up the bum, he has another 2-4 years in the NRL, time to step it up a bit, if he's serious, and I'm not questioning his intent and will to win at all

I’m hopeful but not confident either.

My lack of confidence lies in the short turnaround and the tiring conditions that would have been against the Gold Coast.

Still the talent is absolutely there to win, I hope we cause an upset.

If we keep up our defensive structure we displayed last week then I have no doubt we can hold the Storm tight, we also have a pretty good recent hx of turning up in defence against them (much like Cronulla games).

Where I lack confidence to get the win is going to be our ability to score points with a new 5/8 and fullback, It may all take a little bit of time when up against a well oiled machine that is the Storm.

Rapana back will help us though.

Let’s go Ricky, you can do it

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart's face to hit a brick wall

Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council has today announced Ricky Stuart as the subject of a large mural to be painted on a wall in Queanbeyan’s CBD. In February, contemporary artist Claire Foxton was chosen to create the mural on the wall of Queanbeyan’s Bicentennial Hall. Claire is a designer and artist based in Jamberoo, NSW.

A few years ago a mate of mine had a sickie on a Friday to go see his beloved Man U play in Melbourne. So he finishes work on Thursday, flies to Melbourne on Friday morning and rings his boss back in Newcastle and calls in sick..sweet so far right ?

Kickoff was 8pm in Melbourne an here's old mate "LIVE" on Foxsports wearing his Man U shirt. Beer in one hand, jumping up and down having a grand old time.

Boss pulls him into the office come Monday for a please explain.... :nooo
