Considering Lui had no errors, no penalties conceded, caught a difficult pass and had just 1 missed tackle, I’m still in the ‘someone’ will have to outperform him to take his position.
I want Guler or one of the other young guys to knock down the door for Lui’s position.
Raiders need some reliable middle forwards who do their job without fuss.

Canberra Raiders John Bateman wants to bury Melbourne Storm curse
New star Canberra forward John Bateman is bringing a no-fear policy into the Raiders' clash with NRL nemesis Melbourne.
"I've watched the Storm play myself, obviously last year in the grand final. They're a good side with some world-class players," Bateman said. "There's not really a burden over my head of losing against them or having this record against them.

So in one way there's too little experience with Lui on the bench (and Soliola starting) but dropping Lui and adding in a 3 gamer is the way to go? Interesting.
Re: 2019 Rd 2 V Storm: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
The issue is there's not a lot of difference between Guler and Lui in terms of impact IMO. Lui has experience and solidity, Guler has long term upside potential above Lui. There's a question as to when you give the player with the upside a chance.

You don't have to sell Guler to me. He was on my bench over Lui before round 1 but my bench is only like that as I'd start Soliola.
Who do we bring on next to Papalli to play against every other teams best forwards?

In the first month or two Ricky faced the risk of a prop bench rotation with 3 nrl games between them if he picked Guler, Sutton &Horsburg...
Too much risk when we have a known quantity of reliable service here in Lui.
I agree Guler is a good prospect but Horsburg appears the more aggressive and dynamic at this point, plus Guler is contracted longer. I’m fine with the call at this point.
I do hope to see Guler get a look in after the inevitable injury/suspension/origin and hopefully make himself undroppable so Lui or Sutton need to aim up.
I get it. And cool, but we did this dance before, and it wasnt worth it then and it's not worth it now.
Lui is a known quantity and that quantity isn't a shade on what Gruler could give us. This the side of sports and roster building that we've go to get a handle on. Lui is what in other sports would be called a "progress stopper". That being he's better than your young guy NOW and so he gets the minutes, but because of that, you never get the chance to develop your young guys. We've got him locked up too, he's not going to get head hunted anywhere else like a 21 year old middle is. We need to show a commitment to Gruler, and continue to develop him.
Changing a winning team is hard, and Lui isnt doing a bad job, so that's even harder. But at some point we have to think strategically.
Is the difference between Lui and Gruler (minimal at best) worth the risks? IMO it's not. Lui is a dime a dozen. Gruler's upside is rare to find.

Canberra Raiders rookies Horsburg and Simonsson impressive on debut
Exciting Canberra rookie Bailey Simonsson has received a jolting dose of reality after being forced to make way for Jordan Rapana. He and fellow rookie Corey Hornburg were impressive on debut.
"The intensity was the biggest difference I saw. Everybody knows what they are doing and if you slack off you'll get found out," Horsbugh said. "Defence is my favourite thing to do. I love getting in there and doing the tough stuff."

However, right now, you need to do 1 of 2 things:
1. Play 3 rookies on the bench, thus the middle of the game could get away from you once Sia and Papa are off.
2. Start a rookie. If you do, which do you pick?
Im ok with running Lui for 4-6wks, as long as its a case of getting BRFE and Sutton up to speed before reintroducing Guler. Given Sutton has 120 ESL games, I think a month or so should be enough to at least consider him the starting option if you were to run the 3 rookies.
Re: 2019 Rd 2 V Storm: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
As you say, Sutton has 120 FG games to his name... i know it's not at the same level but i think it's rough to call him a rookie, he's played plenty of top flight football.

The standard recovery time frame for a shoulder reco is 4-6 months. Rapa is back in just over 4. Not sure why people are stunned he's back. He's been on insta absolutely hammering them on the golf course, you can't do that if your shoulder's rooted.

Morley, who? Canberra Raiders forward John Bateman not interested in history as he aims to forge his own NRL path
The last bruising, no-nonsense English backrower to take the NRL by storm on debut was Adrian Morley. John Bateman, the latest British import, is so young he doesn’t recall the ferocious trail of devastation Morley left.
“I was probably not that aware of his impact over here,” Bateman admitted. “I remember him briefly when he came back to England with Bradford for a while and I caught a couple of games of his.”

Yeah, but in reality that makes him a seasoned NSW Cup player only. He gets what it takes to be a pro footballer, day to day, etc, but as yet hasnt mixed it with the best in his sport. In the 2 trials he looked behind the pace, and struggled with the heat. In his 15min stint the other night, he looked ok... in English weather.PigRickman wrote: ↑March 20, 2019, 9:28 am As you say, Sutton has 120 FG games to his name... i know it's not at the same level but i think it's rough to call him a rookie, he's played plenty of top flight football.

As per my previous post, Im happy to give BRFE and Sutton 4-6wks, with Lui playing as an experienced middle taking the pressure off, as long as the plan is to be looking to make 1 of BRFE or Sutton the future starting prop. If game 1 is anything to go off, BRFE is in front. Then, make the switch to Guler, who has obviously been asked to go away and work on something, hence not making the 21 for 2 wks, but has already tasted NRL footy.
If the scenario is to leave Guler to rot, then your 'development killer' post stands, and Im not happy.

Jordan Rapana rapid return catches Canberra Raiders co-captains Jarrod Croker and Josh Hodgson on the hop
Jordan Rapana's return from a shoulder reconstruction this week was so unexpected, it even caught the team's co-captains unawares.
"I actually didn't have any idea, I knew he was coming along quite well and that he was a little bit ahead of schedule, which was around round 10," Croker said. "Only Rapa could do that, for somebody in the past hasn't been the best trainer and he's a pretty laid-back sort of bloke.

Jordan Rapana's healing powers come to the fore to face Storm
Fractured skull. Can I play this week? Serious hamstring injury - back a month early. Shoulder reconstruction? Miss one game.
"Four months is about as fast as you can get coming back from a reconstruction," former Raiders doctor Wilson Lo said. "The [players] that are faster and more powerful, they tend to recover from injuries a lot faster than ones who have a different type of muscle fibre."

I know he is in his 4th year but why isn’t anyone mentioning Elliot Whitehead, it really put a bug up my backside that no one mentions him but us , he is so underrated it isn’t funny , he makes his tackles and does his runs , gets a good off load or set last up a play , he reminds me of Chris flannery, you could put him anywhere and he won’t let you down

I'd go with Papa and Guler, with Sutton and Sia off the bench
As per my previous post, Im happy to give BRFE and Sutton 4-6wks, with Lui playing as an experienced middle taking the pressure off, as long as the plan is to be looking to make 1 of BRFE or Sutton the future starting prop. If game 1 is anything to go off, BRFE is in front. Then, make the switch to Guler, who has obviously been asked to go away and work on something, hence not making the 21 for 2 wks, but has already tasted NRL footy.
If the scenario is to leave Guler to rot, then your 'development killer' post stands, and Im not happy.

Following the trials I did not have a spot for Sutton. I had Lui starting with a bench of Havili, Sia, Guler and Horsepower. Sticky has swapped Guler for Sutton the way I see it.
