Weather: Showers. Possible storm. Cloudy. Very high chance of showers. The chance of a thunderstorm, most likely in the afternoon and evening, possibly severe. Light winds. Chance of any rain: 90 per cent. Possible rainfall: 15 to 30 mm Min 20 Max 27
The Canberra Raiders head into the 2019 season after two come from behind victories in the pre-season. In their first trial at St Marys, the Parramatta Eels went to a 20-0 lead after 31 minutes, but Canberra came back in the second half. Andre Niko's try in the final seconds of the game, and Sam Williams' sideline conversion, produced an unlikely 22-20 victory. The Raiders also came back in the second half in the trial against the Bulldogs at Bega, winning 28-22. It was a solid hit out for most of the top team. However, the metres and points conceded in both trials was a concern.
More on the trials: As I saw it
In Round 1, the Raiders travel to the Gold Coast for a meeting with the Titans. Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has selected two players to make their NRL debuts - Bailey Simonsson on the wing, in place of the injured Jordan Rapana, and forward Corey Horsbourgh on the bench. Simonsson gets his chance, with the experienced Michael Oldfield (groin) also out injured. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad will play his first match in green at fullback, as will English forwards John Bateman and Ryan Sutton. Bateman has been selected at lock and Sutton on the bench. Josh Papalii moves to starting prop, with Sia Soliola to partner him in the front row. As expected, Jack Wighton has been shifted to five eighth.
The Titans will feature former Raiders prop, Shannon Boyd, as well as a former Raiders back, Brenko Lee. It will also be the first time that Canberra Raiders Immortal, Mal Meninga, will be in the opposition corner. He joined the Titans as "Head of Performance and Culture" during the off season.
Late changes: Luke Bateman and JJ Collins turned out for Mounties on Friday night, so they are the two players to initially drop out of the Raiders squad of 21. The Titans omitted Mitch Rein and Keegan Hipgrave on Saturday night.
Milestone: The Raiders are six points away from 20,000 all time points scored by the club. Three players have scored more than 1,000 (Jarrod Croker 1,768, David Furner 1,218, Clinton Schifcofske 1,052). It would be fitting if current co-captain Jarrod Croker scored the 20,000th point.
History: Canberra has won 10 of 22 games against the Gold Coast Titans - and 25 of 39 games played against all incarnations of the Gold Coast. The Raiders have won five of the past 10 matches against the Titans. They lost in the Round 1 clash last year in the final two minutes, 30-28... after leading 24-6 at one stage. The Raiders got some revenge at Canberra Stadium in Round 9, winning the re-match 32-18. The Raiders have won just four of 11 games played at Robina Stadium - and four of 12 games played on the Gold Coast.
2018 Round 9 Canberra Raiders V Gold Coast Titans
2018 Round 1 Canberra Raiders V Gold Coast Titans
Form: Titans: LLWLL
Raiders: LLWWL
Last year's form doesn't count for a lot, but the Titans won just one of their final five games in 2018, a 42-34 victory over the Sea Eagles. However, three of those losses were narrow (Panthers 17-16, Storm 10-8, Cowboys 30-26). The Titans lost both of their 2019 trial matches. In their first trial at Sunshine Coast Stadium, the Cowboys ran out 22-16 winners. The Titans went to an 18-0 lead against the Broncos in their second trial, with Shannon Boyd putting in a barnstorming first 20 minutes. However, the Broncos came back, with Alex Glenn scoring three tries. The Broncos ultimately took out the match, 25-22.
The Raiders produced two good wins in the final five matches of 2018, beating the eventual premiers, the Roosters, 14-12 and the Rabbitohs, 24-12. They'll be hoping to repeat those performances much more consistently in 2019.
Betting: The Titans are slight favourites in the match, paying $1.85, the Raiders $1.97. The Raiders have 1.5 points start in the line betting.
Stat attack: The Titans finished in 14th place on the ladder in 2018, winning just eight matches and losing 16. The Raiders placed 10th, with 10 wins and 14 losses. The Raiders produced a 3-9 record on the road, while the Titans won just four of their 12 home games. The Raiders averaged 23 points per match last season, second only to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, while the Titans averaged just under 20 points. Canberra conceded 22.5 points per match, the Titans more than 24. Both teams had an average winning margin of around 13 points, but the Raiders suffered more close losses. The Raiders had an average losing margin of eight points, the Titans over 13.
Our tip: The Gold Coast Titans have recruited well for the 2019 season, adding Tyrone Peachey (Panthers), Shannon Boyd (Raiders), Tyrone Roberts (Warrington Wolves) and Ryley Jacks (Storm). Boyd adds size to the Titans forward pack - which already featured the likes of Ryan James, Jarrod Wallace, Kevin Proctor and Jai Arrow. The Raiders will also feature new forward recruits, John Bateman and Ryan Sutton - making the Raiders much more mobile up front. However, the extra mobility means Canberra now has one of the smallest packs in the NRL. They'll need to stop the momentum of the Titans forwards if the Raiders are to win the contest.
Canberra has a new spine combination, with Jack Wighton moving to five eighth and former Warrior, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad taking over at fullback. The Raiders trial at Bega provided some assurance that shifting Wighton is a good move. It'll certainly stiffen the defence - and that is what is needed if Canberra is to return to the top eight. Cutting one try conceded per match, on average, will put the Green Machine alongside the benchmark defensive teams.
One of the most interesting match-ups will be between the two hookers, Josh Hodgson and Nathan Peats. Hodgson has been elevated to the role of co-captain, and when in form, is one of the top three dummy halves in the competition. I'm banking on him having a big match, and will help lead the Raiders to a Round 1 win. Raiders by four.
What they're saying:
Josh Papalii on facing Shannon Boyd: "It will be real emotional playing Boydy, coming up through the 20s with Shannon and then playing NRL together. He was a massive loss to the Raiders but we've got some young boys coming through now and I'm excited to see them step up. I don't think blue suits him... but I hope he does well and we get the win."
Jarrod Croker on the Raiders' more mobile forward pack: "It's very mobile and even though we lost two boys [Shannon Boyd and Junior Paulo] who are absolutely loved here at the club and they loved being here, it's just the way it is. They say we've lost a bit of size, but Josh Papalii and Joe Tapine aren't exactly little men so we've still got some punch there."
