Canberra Raiders say George Williams deal not done

Post by greeneyed »

Don Furner on 2CC this morning discussing players from England. Asked if the Raiders are still watching what’s happening in Super League with a view to recruiting more Englishmen, he said there is a player they have interest in and are hopeful of recruiting the player. Will keep an eye out for the podcast of the interview.

I think Sezer is out the door after this season and this is his replacement. Good upgrade!

Yep that is my read on it, and the Dogs will have enough money for him for next season.

I agree he will return to Sydney. I can't see us making the move for Williams if something like that wasn't known.

And if it is known, it may be that we are negotiating an early release of Williams to move on Sezer.

We could also do a sneaky Williams/Williams swap.

Kent suggested on NRL 360 the other night that the Dogs have money in this year's salary cap. If that's true it seems plausible that an early release is on the cards for Sezer. The sticking point could come down to a suitable replacement for Williams at Wigan.

It's not about wanting him to go but just trying to join the dots.
I hope Sezer has a great year.

I hope our number 7 leads us to a premiership this year.

I don’t really care who wears that jersey though.

THEO Fages could join the raft of English players heading to the NRL after receiving offers from two clubs. One club it is not, however, is Canberra Raiders as they are thought to have signed Wigan’s George Williams: https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/8677527/ ... er-league/

Had a drink with a few blokes this evening who are all inside the tent at the Raiders to one extent or another, one of whom has just returned from northern England. All convinced Williams is coming here, and soon.
Which doesn't mean it WILL happen.

Fages could be absolutely anything in rugby league. He's loaded up with skill, pace and vision and hits like a truck in defence.

Problem is, though, is how rarely he brings it all together. If, and it's a big if, someone can get him to do that, they'll have a world beater on their hands.

I hope so, because it will bring on the French team no end.

Sporting News reporting that it’s a 400k per year deal over 3 years.. but as always I take reported salaries with a grain of salt

If so, that sounds fair. He has some pedigree at Wigan and England but untried at NRL. I wouldn’t baulk at paying that for a promising half.

I'll make one final plea to not agree a fee for Williams and to throw the money at Castleford for Jake Trueman.

Mentioned him a while ago. He's younger, a class above Williams, an organiser and likely to be cheaper.

Let’s get them both!

Our track record of recruiting halves to this club has stunk for a quarter of a decade - why not continue to mine the ESL? Looking to England been possibly the only aspect of the Raiders operations in the past few years where we are showing greater vision/creativity than our rivals - so many of the things we do are amateurish compared to the best clubs in the competition

400k Australian isn't a big risk cap wise either. It's probably closer to Sam Williams salary than Sezer's.

I find it very hard to believe that a wider England squad member would pack up and move halfway across the world for $400k, I'd imagine 5-600 would be closer to the money. Looking at the ESL Salary Cap it's surprisingly low though - £2 million.

He is a marquee player, so isn't counted on the cap.

You do have to remember plenty of young Poms do choose to come here and live on nothing. 400k is plenty to live on.

English players aren't coming here for the money, they're coming here to test themselves the NRL.

Even the French Press are convinced that George is Raiders bound and are speculating that his replacement will be James Maloney

It's really very clear he's coming and it's just some silly PR exercise from Wigan to control the narrative.

Im wondering if the delay and secrecy is more around the transfer date than the transfer fee. Canberra might be quickly looking for a replacement player so thy can get him here by June.

So you're saying Sezer isn't really injured and he'll be in Wigan by June !!!

I am slightly concerned if we're punting Sezer and bringing him in to partner Wighton, that Williams hasn't worn the #7 for almost five years in professional football.

In my perfect, chess type player movement mind - Sezer will somehow end up at the doggies in June, we will get Williams, and someone form the dogs will be in England. Shipping someone like Toleman towards the end of his career would be beneficial for him - extending his plying days, beneficial for Wigan as a replacement for Bateman, beneficial for the dogs as they get a half and clear some cap space.

PJ, can you give Deano a call??
