Canberra Raiders reportedly interested in signing Chad Townsend

Post by greeneyed »

NRL clubs sweat on off-field dramas triggering late buying spree

The Daily Telegraph is reporting the NRL will mete out the punishment for salary cap cheating this week after an ARL Commission meeting on Thursday.... and it is expected the Sharks will subsequently need to release a mid-tier player to become cap compliant. The NRL has a “last man in, first-man out” rule which states the club’s last signing — in this case, Shaun Johnson — cannot play if the club cannot become cap compliant. It is unlikely but this could push Johnson on to the open market.

Canberra has indicated they would sign halfback Chad Townsend but the Sharks are reluctant to release their grand final-winning No.7.

Aiming high as usual. It's not exactly a vote of confidence in the Wighton move either.

More importantly , how come this stain of a club can be rorting the cap in 2015 and 2017 but not in 2016 when they won the comp.

And another thing , why were they allowed to sign SJ , when the NRL fully knew they had salary cap infringements.

No to Townsend BTW

I really like this.

He can either dethrone Sezer, OR, push Jack back to FB.

I can also see why they would punt Townsend over SJ. However, they will probably lose Flanagan too, so unless this is a last ditch effort to kepp him, as in, we punt Townsy and you start. Moylan could go to 6 too.

The have FB options in Dugan and Moylan 🤣🤣🤣 . If it was Dugan, Xerri can play at centre, and if you saw him vs Manly, wow.

Some feasibility there. Its VERY VERY late in the piece to be bringing in a half though.

Its around their Salary cap , therefore Townsend will take up more than Flanno , so losing Flanno wont help their cap too much

The question is... why is the NRL allowing the Sharks to keep Shaun Johnson? Why? Why are they breaking their own usual rules and guidelines for the Sharks, who have cheated the cap. We're told the cheating is worse than expected. The Raiders tried to sign Johnson... why is a club who has cheated the cap allowed to trump other clubs from signing free agents?

You’re right GE. And we will end up with the Chad Townsend booby-prize, just so that the NRL can do their “all good, nothing to see here” routine. As if jettisoning him here makes it all ok

I’m all for nabbing a marquee signing, but I just don’t think Townsend is good enough to be brought in 3 weeks before the start of the season as a half. It would likely push Jack back to FB when he’s spent pretty much all pre season at 5/8, I think Jack at least deserves the first few rounds in the halves.

Shaun Johnson would be a completely different story.

A premiership winning half back with a clam temperament and kicking game. And people are saying no.
He is an upgrade with what we have. Not much of an upgrade but it’s slim pickings really.

FWIW Chad Townsend does seem like an upgrade now... put him in our system and our coach, and i think we'll find out whats what.

Chaddy T isn't going to move the needle here. Not in this situation.

Geez Chad Townsend is like chasing one of the Daddo brothers and ending up with Lochie.

Just to be clear on the analogy, we were probably chasing Reni Matua and ended up with Chad Townsend.

If we are fair dinkum about getting him, potentially having his premiership dummy half on the coaching staff is not a bad thing to try and get him.

I can’t read the article but you may get Townsend in a fire sale just like when Fenton and Lee left a couple of years ago.

The more I think about it the more I would like to see it.

He is a better player than Sezer for sure. But has anyone seen Townsend play as the primary half before? He has been atrocious every time I have seen him in that role, and that's what he would be alongside Wighton.

I rate Townsend. He’s got a calm head on him. In my top 10 hairstyles, and has also won premierships in every division he’s played in.

The guy is a beautiful winner.

Chad wasn’t a key player in the Sharks premiership run, He was on the cusp of being dropped and doesn’t offer much beyond stability.

I can’t believe we would be chasing him. Wise choice by Sharks to choose Johnson over Townsend. We should be paying bigger dollars for top line halves or fullback. Not biggish money for NRL level only.

I can't see the point in adding him to the squad, unless he's a replacement for Sezer or Wighton - who would need to move on.

If the Sharks pay a bit of freight, the Raiders could get a (bit) better player and a reduction of the cap to be spent elsewhere.

He’s not better... and we can’t carry an extra half of his quality in the squad.
