Raiders, Panthers deny Dylan Edwards switch

Post by greeneyed »

Edwards-Raiders rumour a dud
The Mole

Hottest rumour doing the rounds this week is that classy utility Dylan Edwards is on the outer at Penrith and could be headed to the Raiders. It’s come about because Dallin Watene-Zelezniak may start the new season at fullback despite Edwards’ sizzling performances there last season.

But I’ve checked with both clubs - and the rumour is a dud. The Panthers realise the value of Edwards and aren’t about to let him go anywhere, while the Raiders have little money to spend in the cap in any case.

I loved the optimism around here about this recently. Why people continue to believe we have high functioning geniuses running the club I have no idea. We're up against the cap so any signings will be fringe first graders.

The Panthers and Gould especially have very little credibility when it comes to denying player/coach movement.
If and it is a big if we have the money to spend it is still entirely possible despite denials.

This club never ceases to amaze me with their incompetence. Should have millions in cap space but alas we have blown it on god knows who.

If Abbey starts in the starting 13 for round 1 (fb or wing), we might as well have the spoon...

If this is the case Wighton stays at 1 and Williams at 7.

You aren’t getting much in the fullback stakes with $350K.

That's not the point I was making.

I bet we end up spending $80k on some park footballer from Dubbo.

I thought it was less than that anyway unless Rapana is on circa $700k per year

Ha ha - imagine believing a Penrith denial!

Hooks not going anywhere - nek minnit
Moylans got our full support - nek minnit
Bryce Cartwright is part of the future - nek minnit
Trent Merrin will be here in 2019, not super league - nek minnit

Getting a denial is almost confirming the opposite with those blokes...

It is hard to take much heed of anything Penrith tell us... but it is not a huge surprise, I guess, that even with the $175,000 Rapana cap relief... we have no cap space for a signing of this sort.

I was very hopeful that we might, I hope something can still work, somehow. I still can't quite work out why there is insufficient cap space, given the players released and signed.

But if we're told there is nothing in the kitty... at least it is consistent.

Sadly, without the recruitment of a strong half or fullback, I can't see us seriously competing in 2019.

It's the mole, so doesn't mean much.

I am sure we don't have much on the cap but we probably wouldn't need a lot the first year.

It is so depressing. Our side would've looked heaps better with Edwards but he is no superstar. The recruitment is so disappointing that we think of gaining a competent 1st grader like Edwards like we're getting Tedesco or something.

We don't have $350,000 from Rapana's relief though, it is half that. There are three spots to fill in the top 30. The club must have at least around $305,000 to spend (three minimum salaries), plus the $175,000 salary cap relief. That's $480,000 on three players, two on minimum and $270,000 for another. That is no doubt overly simplistic. Any player we sign from here comes at a three month discount for this year... though train and trials I presume also cost. But if those rough figures are right... then we're not signing any player of note.

We were told last year in August - when the Sharks cap breach became a story - that they were $500,000 under the cap for last year at that time.

So if we were the Sharks and operated on having a fairly large buffer in the cap maybe we could get a player like Edwards. But that's not how the Raiders seem to operate. Don Furner has told us that the club spends right up to the cap.

By the way, Edwards is better than "competent"... so I hope a deal can somehow be done. I'd be thrilled to get him.

The only way I can figure in my right mind that we're up against the cap ceiling is if we're still paying a portion of Boyd and Paulo

So we are committed to playing Wighton at 6 ??

Maybe its part of the game day promotion...get there early with your boots and an hour before the main game they pull a name out of the hat for a shot at the raiders #1

couldn't be worse than the alternatives :| :rant :|

Considering they were not actually contracted to the club for this season, still paying them would be a mighty fine case for seeking a new contract lawyer at the Raiders.

Point taken and I figured people would take issue with that description but superstar potential isn't buying a top quality player so the point still remains. This is where we are in regards to recruitment.

The only explanation is gross managerial incompetence.

If the cap truly is maxed out with us short a half (say $750k), a prop (say $450k) and an outside back (say $350k) there is no other way to look at it.

Think about that - we're maxed out and a million and a half off the pace.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Every second player signing in the competition is preceded by statements from all and sundry that the player is staying put.

Edwards is coming off a season ending injury and is currently pencilled in for reserve grade in round one (assuming DWZ starts at fullback). If we can't afford or can't present an offer deemed attractive to a player like Edwards than its just further evidence of the gross incompetence of the people running our club IMO.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.
