Tom Starling (born 4 June 1998) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who plays as a hooker. He previously played for the Newcastle Knights in the National Rugby League.

Born in Windsor, New South Wales, Starling played his junior rugby league for the Kincumber Colts, before being signed by the Newcastle Knights.

In June 2015, Starling won the Knights' Carlson Club-Andrew Johns Medal for best under-18s player. In September 2015, he won the S. G. Ball Cup Player of the Year award for best under-18s player. From 2015 to 2017, he played for the Newcastle Knights' National Youth Competition team. In September 2017, he re-signed with the Knights on a 1-year contract until the end of 2018.

In 2018, Starling alternated between the new Jersey Flegg Cup competition and Intrust Super Premiership NSW competition for the Knights. In round 25 of the 2018 NRL season, he made his NRL debut for the Knights against the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He parted ways with the Knights at the end of the season.

A bit small for a modern day 9. But hopefully he goes ok for us.

He goes really well. Tough as and pretty dynamic around the ruck. Specialist 9 though and not a part time half. With Patterson being young he will be a good backup for the top side.

We obviously need at least 1 more hooker I'm the squad, so I am surprised this is just train and trial with Patterson already on a development deal.

Also do the Knights really think Mann is a first grade hooker? I think they sell the position short.

Agree, we definitely need another hooker. You need three in a squad of 30.

Ex North Queensland under 20s Hooker who played Flegg for us last year. He is on a development deal.

So happy with this signing glad to see we're looking at improving our 3rd stringers.

Get him in front of the Canberra Times as often as possible. He could become our media Starling

A cheap 3rd string hooker is the kinda depth we need.

Yeah ok. He's too small for firsts so rather not have in the top 30.

Hopefully he kills it in reggies and never gets a shot in first grade.

Starling life-line

Canberra Raiders have thrown a career life-line of sorts to discarded Knights hooker Tom Starling. Starling, who didn’t figure in the Knights’ plans this season despite getting an NRL debut off the bench in the final round against the Dragons last season, had signed with Tweed Heads and was in training with the Queensland Cup side before taking a call from Raiders recruitment guru Peter Mulholland.

The up-shot is the young hooker arrived in the national capital this week on a train and trial basis with a view to the Raiders potentially signing him at the end of it. He has bunked in with former Knights junior halfback Brendan O’Hagan.

Tweed Heads Seagulls lose recruit Tom Starling to Canberra Raiders

The Tweed Heads Seagulls have lost the services of recruit Tom Starling, with the 20-year-old scoring an NRL trial opportunity with Canberra. The young hooker made his NRL debut in the final round of 2018 with Newcastle, but the Knights opted to not renew his contract at the end of the season. The Seagulls let him chase higher honours when the Raiders came calling.
