What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
I think the coach can get a better picture on who fits where, especially on the bench, if he uses the trials properly. If we are considering Horsburgh then play him properly in the trials, same with Sutton and J.Bateman and the 7's winger to see what works best with a side told they're all competing for Round 1 spots. The trials also need to work out the Wighton/Williams/Abbey scenario too. These things are critical before R1. I've never been either way on the trials debate but this year I don't think the significance of them can be understated. I'm curious to see how Ricky approaches these games and whether he treats them with the usual contempt and is simply proceeding with them because a review recommended he does it.
We continue to **** about with blokes that are part of some fraternity. It's infuriating.

Yeah, I'd be very happy with that as long as it's 1. Edwards 5. Olfield.
Without Edwards it's 1. Wighton, 5. Oldfield, 6. Williams.
Our depth is pretty horrendous this season.

Kris is about the only one but he looked a long way off first grade standard last year. Do we have any young star backs coming through?
We have to be looking for an outside back , at least 1 , hopefully 2 .
A good fullback to allow Wighton to move to 5/8 without losing too much.
If Wighton is moved to 5/8 without recruiting then its between Cotric , Abbey and Oldfield for the fullback spot until Raps comes back midway through the year and that isn't pretty.
Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
Oldfield isn't a fullback option. His game is basically running in a straight line, which he does very well. Playing him at center was bad enough.
Kris could play on the wing but he looked years off last season and I think with his build he would be more of a center anyway, I reckon he would struggle against attacking kicks on the wing.
We will surely sign another winger with Rapanas cash but if there is an injury I would think Bateman would go back to center.

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
You guys are forgetting that All Blacks 7s kid Simonsson. By all accounts he is training very well, and has a better skill set due to being a 7s player.
Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
Haven't forgotten him... but no-ones seen him tackle yet or even play a game of league, so I'm not really putting him in then pile.
None of our other 7's signings have worked out. I can't think of many that have worked out for any club (there probably are, I just don't know them). 7's is fast and has open space, you make the odd tackle but very rarely have to hold a disciplined line in defence for repeat plays and never really make decisions with multiple bodies at angles/layers of attack ala league.
It's tackle, tackle, scrambling, try. Tackle, scramble, tackle, tackle, chase a kick. Repeat.
He'll be a lovely bonus if he turns out to be anything but I'm not planning for him.
Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
He is a development player.
Plus defense is a skill and Union 7s has hardly any.
Bateman just played half a super league season at center and was arguably the best player in the comp. It's not like moving Tapine or Whitehead in there of we need cover.

can't think of 7's players that have transferred to NRL very well. Didn't we have a reggies player that played in the Australian 7's side a few years back? Have a feeling their last name started with H
Edit: think it was an Australian touch player, not 7’s

Noa started there.
We had Dukawaqa last year, who was a gold medal winning Fijian 7's player. He lasted about a month and never got past playing country footy.
However Simonsson played Harold Matthews for us so he at least has a League background.

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
You are basing your entire team and season on the unscheduled comeback of a player from long term injury who will return at an unknown date/round into a position he has never played before... Which involves a mid-season six player shuffle upon that return...Gazman wrote: ↑February 5, 2019, 9:20 pm 1. Cotric (until Rapa is back)

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
I had to laugh at the news report about Wighton to 5/8th.
“It’s a position not unfamiliar to Wighton, with the 25-year-old having started there in nine games in 2014. Wighton also hasn’t been shy to put boot to ball, averaging six kicks and 197 metres per game.”
Problem was those six kicks were from inside the 10 metre zone.

Rapa will be back round 13 so we get the salary cap relief.
He has also played a few games at FB for raiders. Last time in 2015 - there was an article where he said it’s his favoured position.

If that's the case, we still need another winger to replace him should he move there permanently. Still can't believe it looks like Gennings is going to Tigers. Why??? they have Thompson and Nolo??Gazman wrote: ↑February 6, 2019, 11:23 am Rapa will be back round 13 so we get the salary cap relief.

So with the recruitment of Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad today... do you have changes to your strongest starting line up for 2019?

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
Assuming we don’t get another fullback like Edwards, I reckon it’s most like Nicoll-Klokstad will be on the wing and Oldfield at fullback. But it’s a worry if we expect Oldfield to cover No. 1 for the whole season.
Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
Oldfield at fullback is going to be a disaster. I can't believe that's the option been considered.
