Ah right you are. I would have thought they'd have seen enough in AJs last 4 games of the year at fullback to pick him first even with Gordan still there who looked a bit cooked about halfway through the year.
My strongest raiders lineup would be:
1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad
2. Nick Cotric
3. Jarrod Croker
4. Joey Leilua
5. Michael Oldfield
6. Jack Wighton
7. Aidan Sezer
8. Josh Papalii
9. Josh Hodgson
10. Sia Soliola
11. John Bateman
12. Elliot Whitehead
13. Joseph Tapine
14. Siliva Havili
15. Emre Guler
16. Dunamis Lui (changed my mind from bateman, opted for more impact, really could be Horsburgh if he has a big trial)
17. Ryan Sutton
Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
As usual I think you're pretty bang on there Zim.
I have the same 17 but my only change is i'd start Lui and have Soliola on the bench. We need that leadership in the forwards when the first changes are made and our other middles get tired and I feel like he drags everyone up with his standards and energy. He deserves to start in that line up but his importance as the on field heavy when other teams are making their impact change and straight after halftime might be critical.
Additionally, at that 20 minute mark when things are changing, I wouldn't mind seeing Ricky start to shuffle the middles/edge on the park to increase the energy in there. That might mean pushing Tapine wider and getting Bateman or Whitehead in more central where we need to try win the ruck and the back end of the half.

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
Good points on Sia. I've considered a few sides with him on the bench and Sutton or Lui start instead, even had Tapine at prop but I keep coming back to selecting who I think are the best 13 just based on getting off to the best start possible. The idea also being those guys are there to close out the matches, but as you point out there's plenty of flexibility with the side we have so we could see some interesting combinations tried out.
Havili can also come on and free up Hodgo to roam or play lock and release Tapine to an edge after a short rest.

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
I think Oldfield will start the year at fullback with CNK and Simonsson fighting it out for that wing spot. He’s trained all offseason there and I think he’ll get first crack in the dogs trial.
Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
It’s not my strongest lineup, but I think this is how we’ll start round 1
1. Oldy
2. CNK
3. Crokes
4. BJ
5. Cotric
6. Wighton
7. Sezer
8. Soliola
9. Hodgo
10. Lui
11. Tarps
12. Whitehead
13. Papa
14. Havili
15. J. Bateman

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
That would not shock me, but we can’t play a full season with Oldfield at fullback and expect to make the finals, IMO. Guess that’s a statement that might well come back to haunt me!

Jacks wasnt Storm material. He isnt good enough to hold a spot when competition for spine positions is so great - Croft, Drinkwater, Hughes, some bloke starting the P and every letter of the alphabet, and there is young Johns.zim wrote: ↑February 14, 2019, 8:58 pmSo you're saying he's been proven to not be good enough, which is fair enough.Matt wrote: ↑February 14, 2019, 6:38 pmHe wasn't asked to do anything more than make his tackles and kick if required. Is Jacks a good enough player to play NRL footy? Yes. He is a 2nd receiver who will make his tackles and make very few errors. TBH, he is the kind of guy you want to pair with a DCE, Pearce, Johnson etc. As it turns out, looks like he will partner Ash Taylor, who is the next young half to push to be a part of the aforementioned group.
We want that kind of player because attack isnt the issue, a half that could hold his own in defense is.

IMO, Oldie at FB is the 'safety 1st' option. I have no doubt he will make few mistakes. However, I cant see any value add. The 2 youngsters have a bit of attacking flair about them, and not taking advantage of that is a mistake.

Yeah I don't see this team running out round 1 either. As you know there's been talk of Tapine "maybe in the middle" but when you've got your new "marquee" signing wanting to play lock and your 4 year re-signing international second rower wanting to be an 80min second rower then they've probably earned the right to get first crack in those positions.Matt wrote: ↑February 15, 2019, 10:19 amId definately play AJ. And maybe somehow Luke Bateman still sneaks in there somewhere .
I had Sutton starting at different times. I don't think he'd have any issues with a starting 20min stint given his numbers.
There's always a ricky curve ball in the team too and it sounds like Oldfield at fullback is it for this year, which I completely disagree with. I don't think he offers the energy or skills required for a 1st grade fullback.

After a small sample last year and what I saw tonight I'm still surprised not many have Murchie in their 17. For all the wraps the likes of Guler get (who I think is a fine player) I really think Murchie is our best young forward coming through the lower grades. He is a definite FG'er to my eye, would hate to lose him going forward.

Agree, that’s why I thought the recruitment of Bateman was odd. We have 4 international level second rowers on the books now, with two shifting to the middle to get starting spots.Wiki Special wrote: ↑February 15, 2019, 9:42 pm After a small sample last year and what I saw tonight I'm still surprised not many have Murchie in their 17. I thought Sam Williams was the best on ground last night. I would have him in the halves with Jack at the Back. Such a side has our most experienced spine players in their best positions.

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
I think we have five certainties in our starting pack - Hodgson, Papalii, Tapine, Whitehead, J. Bateman. Where they all play depends on who the sixth guy is. If Murchie gets a go in the squad (whether starting or - more likely - the bench) it is likely Tapine sees time at prop even if he starts on the edge. Which I like.Coastalraider wrote: ↑February 16, 2019, 3:49 amAgree, that’s why I thought the recruitment of Bateman was odd. If Murchie were to progress to a starting spot during the year, what would be wrong with our starting pack being the below for the next few seasons;
Papalii
Hodgson
Tapine
Murchie
Whitehead
J. Bateman
With young guys like Horsburgh and Guler on the bench breathing down their necks. Or maybe it is Horsburgh, who I rate above Guler also, progresses to a starting spot in the next season or two?

Re: What's your strongest possible Canberra Raiders 2019 line up?
I know we get excited about our young forwards, but surely we're not starting Horsburgh against the Titans in Round 1? They are expected to start with a pack that has Wallace, Boyd, Arrow in the middle and Ryan James and Proctor on the edges. We couldn't be considering making a kid debut in round 1 away against that type of size.
We continue to **** about with blokes that are part of some fraternity. It's infuriating.
