Bailey Simonsson signs one year development deal with Canberra Raiders

The Canberra Raiders have signed former Green Machine junior and All Blacks Sevens player, Bailey Simonsson, 20, on a one-year development contract for the 2019 season.

"It's very exciting to be back in Canberra, I'm good mates with Nick Cotric so it's great being back with him and playing in Canberra," Simonsson said. "I've got a real desire to play in the NRL and especially in Canberra with the first side that gave me a chance when I was younger. To back here and play is a bit of dream."

To clarify - someone signed on a development contract CAN NOT play first grade at all can they?

I believe they are changing the rule so they can play after June 30 but officially no, unless you apply for special dispensation in an injury crisis. For a winger that would be very hard to get.

Looks promising... However, I am craving a solid, genuine 1st grade option type signing.

Canberra Raiders sign former All Blacks sevens player Bailey Simonsson

The Canberra Raiders have bolstered their outside back stocks, signing former All Blacks sevens player Bailey Simonsson on a one-year development contract on Thursday.

"It's very exciting to be back in Canberra. I'm good mates with Nick Cotric so it's great being back with him and playing in Canberra," Simonsson said. "I've got a real desire to play in the NRL and especially in Canberra with the first side that gave me a chance when I was younger. To be back here and play is a bit of dream."

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

At least he played in our juniors and is a local so is less likely to jump ship at the first chance.

So its only a matter of time before he gets homesick for Brisbane.

I still love him but I think the players/club are a bit stale and need a change of voice for their sanity.
He hasn’t been able to motivate them the past 2 years so I’m interested to see how he does it in 2019.
I have zero faith in the squad, it’s weaker than previous years.

Sums up how I’m feeling right now.

We’ve got our worst side (on paper) for five years, we’ve apparently got no room in the cap to bolster the cattle we have but more than anything the club just seems to be out of ideas on how to make changes.

What is even more sad is that if he was not employed Andrew McFadden would be the coach. If Ricky got the sack in 2019 he would take over.
I don’t know how I feel about that or that it would give me much hope.

McFadden is not an upgrade. He has a Warriors team with the like of Shaun Johnson there and couldn’t take them to the finals. Bearing in mind to make the finals you only have to win about 55% of your games.
He was also assistant to Furner here a few years ago through some dark times.
If a new coach is to come in it better not be a Ex-Raider.

Our coach has made the finals once in the last five seasons, it's the worst five-year period of our club in thirty years. A rotting pumpkin would be an upgrade.

As mentioned on the GH Live during the fan day signing session:

According to Canberra Times reporter David Polkinghorne, the Raiders are set to upgrade Bailey Simonsson’s contract to the 30 man squad after his summer training efforts. This means he will be eligible to be selected from Round 1 onwards.

@Super_Couch

The @RaidersCanberra to upgrade Bailey Simonsson to the 30-man squad for his efforts this summer. Started on a train and trial, then got a development spot... #nrl

Makes no sense unless he plays rd one. He’d have still been there to upgrade until we had to fill our roster, now we just have no flexibility

I kind of agree but he makes it 29/30 so there is still one spot open. If they are saving spot 30 for a higher quality signing and they think Simonsson is really a first grader this year it makes sense, otherwise they potentially lose the chance to play him at all.

Proves 2 things:
1. We arent getting an Edwards, Dufty, Johnston or Jennings prior to Rd 1
2. That he was in fact killing it at training.

I thought he looked very good in the opposed training session on Saturday, he started at fullback, with CNK the other starter at the back.

Thanks matt lippy of sydenham. He has to play rd one otherwise it could still be 1 and 2 and hed be a dev player. The onlything the upgrade changes is that he can play now and we cant get anyone else. Why do that until we have to?

If he doesn't earn a proper contract is it possible he's off to the next opportunity?

Edit:
Nevermind he's already on a development deal.
Wonder if this used the Rapana money.
