Big hair and big heart: Raiders Sia Soliola to shave his iconic locks to help local kids in need

This Thursday night (22 November), Sia Soliola is shaving off his famous locks to raise funds to support disadvantaged and disabled children in the ACT via local charity Kulture Break and while he is quietly nervous about the shave, Soliola says he is committed to the cause.



“As a father, I know how important it is for kids be supported,” Soliola said. “Kulture Break does great things for kids in Canberra, especially those who haven’t been dealt the best cards in life.”

'Anyone would have done what I did': Sia Soliola's desire to help Canberra

Sia Soliola is the type of guy who shaves his head to raise money for charity. And serves food at a homeless shelter. And drives a distraught stranger around the streets to help her look for stolen belongings. The Raiders cult hero will shave his head to raise money for Kulture Break on Thursday afternoon, cutting his long locks for the first time in almost three years.

"He's 'Uncle Sia'. He's always there for the boys, he's one of the nicest blokes you'll meet. He'd do anything for anyone," Jarrod Croker said.

It would have to be the most expensive hair in Canberra. And it's taken Canberra Raiders prop Sia Soliola's breath away - in part because he raised more than $50,000 for charity getting it cut off, but also because he had to front for training in the unseasonal cold on Friday without the warmth of his mop.

"It's breathtaking. It's what it's for, that's really the grateful thing, and what it's going towards," Soliola said. "That was pretty cool. I'm speechless. It's one of the reasons why I love this place, I love this game."

This week, Raiders enforcer Sia Soliola lopped off his trademark long locks for the first time in almost three years to raise funds for Kulture Break, a charity youth services provider that engages young people struggling to cope. Incredibly, Soliola raised more than $50,000 with his efforts.
