Sam Williams to use next two months to stake Canberra Raiders claim

Halfback Sam Williams will use the final two months of pre-season to cement his spot in the team and shore up his Canberra Raiders future.

"There's been a bit of change in personnel, but in saying that we've got a bit of depth there - we're probably underselling what we've got," he said. "We've got a couple of good young players coming through. We've still got two months once we come back from Christmas to really knuckle down and do everything I can to cement a spot."

in case people still weren't sure..

Meanwhile, the Raiders will launch their second pre-season trial at Bega on Thursday.

They will play the Canterbury Bulldogs at Bega on February 23, a week after their first trial - against the Eels at St Marys.

I think Sammy has the preseason interview canned form when he debuted -‘ trying to prove in the off-season I can play regular first grade and try to cement a spot’. He’s been saying that for years.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Canberra Raiders young gun Jack Murchie sees 10 as the magic NRL number

Canberra Raiders young gun Jack Murchie has set his sights on playing 10 NRL games next year and he's got another world-class second-rower to help him achieve it.

"It's probably going to be another learning year for me I'd say, my second year coming into first grade," Murchie said. "There's still so much I can learn from the older boys, but I'm getting to a point now where I want to try and push for a spot in that 17 regularly. I'm hoping to get somewhere around 10 games this year."

Best ever Canberra Raiders nicknames?

Post by greeneyed »

This article has...

‘The Brick With Eyes’ Glenn Lazarus

Arguably Roy and HG’s best because... well for one the brick with eyes is a fitting physical description (even more so when he had the old flat-top head of hair in his playing prime), and two the moniker not only stuck throughout his career but was even used on his parliamentary website when he became a senator in rugby league retirement.

On the top ten, with honourable mention for Steve ‘Boxhead’ Walters.

Terry Fahey, “The Redfern Express” is a pretty good nickname not mentioned... but that was coined when he was with the Rabbitohs.

He's a devastating edge at his best, I'm just trying to figure out how we cope in the middle with the lack of size in our current props and no reduced interchange... and make sense of our recruitment, how to use Murchie in etc at the same time.

2019 season is "make or break" - Jarrod Croker says Canberra Raiders must deliver on their potential

JARROD Croker insists “something has got to give” as the Canberra Raiders approach a make or break season.

"It’s nearly make or break," Croker said. "I’ve been asked it a little bit. I don’t feel it but I feel something has got to give. We’ve said for a while now we have a squad that can play semi-finals football but until we start producing we can’t really say that. We have to come out all guns blazing (to start the year). We can’t be chasing our tails again like the last two years."

NRL 2019 pre-season trials: Fixtures, questions for every team

Canberra is one of the few teams to schedule two trials as Ricky Stuart looks to avoid a repeat of last year’s awful start to the season. The main challenge for Stuart will be sorting out the exact line-up of middle forwards — Josh Papalii and Sia Soliola are assured starting berths but Luke Bateman, Dunamis Lui, Emre Guler, John Bateman, Royce Hunt and Corey Horsburgh will all duke it out for the other spots. The Raiders will also try and get Sam Williams and Aidan Sezer together in the halves as much as possible.

Friday, February 15: v Parramatta Eels, 5.30pm at St Marys Leagues Stadium
Saturday, February 23: v Canterbury Bulldogs, 5.30pm at Bega Recreation Ground

Jarrod Croker: Canberra Raiders ‘back to square one’ in pre-season revamp

Canberra Raiders captain Jarrod Croker believes his team must finally deliver on their potential, having reached the finals once in the past six years.

“It’s nearly make or break,” Croker said. “We’ve said for a while now we have a squad that can play semi-finals football but until we start producing we can’t really say that.”

And the Raiders have rung the changes in preseason, with Croker saying “New trainers, new drills, new assistant coaches. It feels like a fresh vibe around training. We’ve done everything differently. We’ve done different testing. Everything is back to square one.”

Five reasons why the Canberra Raiders will make the NRL finals in 2019
Tim Gavel

It’s fair to say the Raiders have been under-achievers in the past two seasons. But here are my five reasons why I believe the Raiders will perform better in 2019 and make the finals for the first time in three seasons.

1. Josh Hodgson missed the first 14 games in 2018 after suffering a knee injury while playing for England. His absence impacted greatly on the Raiders; they lost five games by two points or less in the first 14 rounds.
2. Jack Wighton
3. John Bateman
4. Aidan Sezer
5. Co-captains

I'm with him on reasons 1 to 4. Pretty ambivalent about the co-captains thing though.

I hope Tim Gavel is right on all counts. I think the co-captaincy will make a difference with a more activist co-captain who now has authority/permission to speak with players and officials. 'She'll be right mate' style is gone I hope.

Playmaker puzzles, coaches and trials: The ultimate guide to the 2019 NRL pre-season

RAIDERS

What needs work?: Plenty. The Raiders have lost five-eighth Blake Austin to the English Super League and will be without the attacking brilliance of Jordan Rapana until the middle of the season. The halves pairing of Sam Williams and Aidan Sezer is unproven. Ricky Stuart will be working overtime to make sure the team not only retains the ability to score points, but their defence vastly improves.
