There are three spots left in the top 30 squad. Sebastian Kris, Corey Horsburgh and Hudson Young promoted to the top 30. Two spots open for development players.

He hasn't really demonstrated that at the Raiders though... no NRL appearances. He has put in some good numbers at Mounties, but I suspect that's his grade.

Was Under 20s second rower this year. Good player from what I've seen.

Can't recall Reuben Porter being linked to us before. Roosters junior, New Zealander, 21 appearances for Wyong Roos this year, second rower. One Test for Cook Islands.

He's been here for 2 years already without making any impact - Hunt, Guler, Knight etc have all overtaken him in the pecking order.

Sign him to mounties, or let him go - lets not waste a spot on someone who wont ever make firsts.

Makatoa would actually really suit a more mobile strategy, he is ahead of Knight and Hunt in that regard. He is great with the footy but like Hunt misses key tackles a lot and doesn't have the salary to allow him to get away with it.

He is about 100:1 to play first grade though, same goes for Hunt. I really don't know why they are kept around when Stuart will not use them.

Surprised not to see Hala as a development player at all, as he was signed to a two year contract I would think he would have to be there. Glad there are a couple more development spots left as O'Hagan is the only one of the 4 listed I think could make firsts and he is some way off (I haven't seen much of Paterson/Niko though).

Depth is an issue, we really need to look at some better players for those last top 30 spots than the train and trialists.

Bateman is an 80 minute player. No way he starts on the bench.
Sutton is young prop who's been playing off the bench in the UK. He won't be a starter - certainly not in round one.
Papalii will start at prop I think and we'll look to get close to 60 minutes out of him a game.

Also surprised not to see Hala' name in any of the lists???

Paterson is a good young hooker.

I'd say it is because he's still on contract to the end of 2019 and still Under 20s... but I'm sure someone reading can confirm!

Probably close to what we'll actually line up with...

We now have a small front row lineup. Papalli will need to carry the team forward and provide the starch in defence, provide all the impact because the other props are all journeymen, plodders or rookies at this stage. Papalli rarely lets the Raiders down but it's a huge ask.

Our back row is very good. All internationals. Whitehead is a workhorse with a nice set of skills. Tapine is powerful and athletic. Bateman- gee I hope he can live up to it. Otherwise, Havili can start at lock in my team any day. Good player, makes things happen.

Our back 3 is very good. Jack has become a pretty effective fullback in structured attack, he's a real physical presence in defence. Not a great kick returner. Tendency to have a run of yips at some stage in a season with his hands. I wouldn't swap Rapana and Cotric for any two wingers in the game. Superstars. And they'll need to live up to it to get our sets started given the makeup of our pack.

Centres are ok. Croker is a good club level player when his knee is right. But if he's lost a yard with that knee then he's average at best club centre. Joey is a big, crazy powerhouse. Can't read a runner or see the forest for the trees gamewise but gee he's fun to watch.

Our halves are much maligned. Sezer can be a very effective half. Good defender for a half. Sammy can look smart and skilled. Bit of a speedbump. Then again, Sezer can seem anonymous and Sammy not quite up to it. Let's just say that at their best, with some chemistry between them and room to operate in they are capable of getting the job done. But... behind a small pack, this could be a train wreck.

Hodgo is going to have to play like it's 2016 all over again... Like Papa, it's a big ask but he's been that good before...

Bench: I have confidence Havili and Sia can come on and get a job done. I'll settle for solid from Sia but Havili actually provides a bit of impact too and whats more he can do it with a nice pass/offload, a big hit or a great charge. Guler should be solid this year. We'll all hope for more but it'll be his first full year and he's going to be right in the thick of it each week. I'm not sure Sutton is going to be effective in Oz. I hope he proves me wrong.

On the face of it, we are a team with a suspect looking front row rotation, our best players are wingers and our halves are no great shakes either. Usually, that does not bode well. We are basically hoping lightning strikes again like in 2016 and a few guys play the best season of their lives at the same time. Papa, Hodgo, BJ, Tapine, Wighton- I'm looking at you as players good enough to swing a season (and assuming Jordy Raps, Cotric will be their usual standards and that everyone else performs about as expected).

Early season success will be based on how well Guler and Sutton go in the front row.

Man we could do with another quality front rower in our squad. Our depth there is atrocious - and in the halves. If either Sezer or Williams go down we're ****.

Agree we need to sign another front rower but I’d like to think what we’ve lost in size might be replaced with a bit more mobility. Hoping that may help us defensively in the back end of games.

I hope Westcott gets added to the list of development players. Whatever the level of footy, players who perform well in finals footy are always worth a punt on imo.

Probably already on an under 20s deal, now we run our under 20s there isn't a big reason to upgrade him unless we think he could play firsts this year. Same as Hala.

Dean Matterson is the nephew of Terry Matterson, and the brother of Ryan Matterson. He was with the Roosters last year and he shifted to the Sea Eagles mid season. Played junior reps with the Parramatta Eels and appeared at five eighth in their narrow 20-18 2017 NYC Grand Final loss to the Manly Sea Eagles.

He's aged 21, born 20 November 1997, and made 10 appearances for the Wyong Roos ISP team last year, mostly playing five eighth, but also at centre. After his mid season shift to the Manly Sea Eagles he played six matches for Blacktown.

Last year, he scored five tries, produced seven try assists, four line break assists and three offloads, forced two line drop outs and averaged 63 kicking metres. He averaged 54 running metres and made a total of 861 running metres. He had an 85.2 per cent tackle efficiency rate: http://ow.ly/6ANF30n0zXx

Was playing with his brother Ryan at the Roosters: https://www.roosters.com.au/news/2018/0 ... attersons/
