Elliott Whitehead on short list for Golden Boot Award

Post by greeneyed »

Canberra Raiders Elliott Whitehead and new recruit John Bateman nominated for Golden Boot

The nomination list for the Rugby League International Federation Golden Boot awarded to the players who have produced the most outstanding performances in international games throughout the year has been extended after the weekend's games.

England has supplied John Bateman, Tommy Makinson and Elliott Whitehead while Kiwi players, Shaun Johnson and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak have also been added to the list. The list already includes Tonga's Jason Taumololo and Sio Siua Taukeiaho and from Australia, Valentine Holmes, James Tedesco and Boyd Cordner.

If Whitehead plays well this weekend he should win it. He was great in the world cup and has back to back man of the match performances vs NZ. Johnson would be the other player with a shot as he was MOTM vs Australia.

However Tedesco has the profile so will probably win it despite playing only 2 games vs 5.

Elliott Whitehead and John Bateman on the long list for Golden Boot

Canberra Raiders duo John Bateman and Elliott Whitehead have been added to the long list for the Rugby League International Federation's Golden Boot award following England's win over New Zealand.

The pair and joined by their international teammate Tommy Makinson and Kiwi stars Shaun Johnson and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak on the list for the award which will be announced on November 7. The list will be reduced to four names later this week before the winner is announced at an event in Leeds.

How can they cut the short list to 4 before the last game? Has it already been voted on or not?

Canberra Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead one of four players on the short list for Golden Boot Award

New Zealand captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Australian fullback James Tedesco and England duo Elliott Whitehead and Tommy Makinson have been shortlisted for 2018 RLIF Golden Boot award.

The quartet were chosen following England's series winning 20-14 defeat of New Zealand at Anfield on Sunday in which Makinson scored a hat-trick of tries to cap a meteoric international rise after only receiving his call-up after Sydney Roosters-bound winger Ryan Hall suffered a season-ending ACL injury.

He should win it comfortably. The judges don't include the usual News limited and Channel 9 suspects so Tedesco shouldn't win it by default.

If Whitey wins the Golden Boot he'll become only the second Raider to achieve this award.

Mal Meninga (1989) is our only winner.

The Golden Boot wasn't awarded between 1991-1998 and I reckon Mullins and Daley would have went close to winning it as well.

Good luck Elliott...

The media in England actually nominated who would've won the years it wasnt awarded. According to that Mullins would've won in 94 and Daley 96.

This is one time that I think we're not being one-eyed. Judged solely on International games, Whitehead looks the strongest candidate for sure. Especially as an 80min forward. His defence and attack has been great in each of the international games.

DWZ really has been brilliant in his time playing fullback for the Kiwi's, which included the Denver test. But that has been mainly as an attacking player, he does have some holes in his game, especially defence. He also didn't play fullback in the World cup, and his team was ordinary and didn't make the final.
Judges could be swayed because he has been brilliant in attack, and these awards can often go to the flashy players.

You wouldn't think Tedesco could win it, just based on the fact he didn't even play in the Australian side that won the World cup, and has only played 2 games, a win against Tonga, and a loss against New Zealand.

Also the judges that are selecting this award would be overall skewed towards England. Mascord doesn't even watch NRL these days, he watches Super League.
The panel comprises NRL.com senior reporter Brad Walter, BBC commentator Dave Woods, renowned journalist Steve Mascord, film maker and Pacific specialist Joanna Lester and League Express managing editor Martyn Sadler.

They gave it to Makinson.
This is the classic flash player gets recognised for scoring tries. He didn't play in the World cup final, played off the bench in Denver, and has been good in this series against NZ.
Even though Whitehead played in all games as 80min forward and got 2 man of the matches.

But Makinson scored 3 tries last week.

Whitehead is very hard done by. Makinson didn't play in the World Cup Final or against France for starters.

The fact that this pommie kid won it over tedesco or Whitehead is an absolute travesty. No one even knew he was outside of England until 2 weeks ago

Tedesco only played 2 games.
I would have understood if DWZ won it, he's been surprisingly really good in a spine position.
But Whitehead overwhelmingly deserved it.

I think Whitehead should have won it, but Makinson was very good in Denver and played well in the first test of the current series - before putting in one of the best performances of any international in recent years in the second test.

If I was being cynical, the fact that he's better looking, speaks very well and is based over here might have something to do with it. We have plenty of good players in ESL, but few that are known by the general public. The game might be trying to hang its hat on Makinson.

Should have been Elliot whitehead

Mid season test
- 2 tries
- 5 tackle breaks
- 155 running metres
- 1 try assist
- 29 post contact metres

End of season test game 1
- man of the match
- 14 hitups
- 101 running metres
- 2 tackle breaks
- 30 tackles
- 32 post contact metres

End of season test game 2
- 1 try assist
- 12 hitups
- 48 post contact metres
- 38 tackles

Not to mention all the off the ball work he does, and the important one on one strip from Tapau in the dying minutes of last game

The usual suspects in the media saying this should have been Tedesco. When the Kangaroos play more Tests, their players might have a shot. Whitehead the best, clearly World Cup Final on.

He was man of the match in the Denver Test too.

I thought he was one of, if not the best Englishman in the World Cup final as well. He made 52 tackles in the match, and that was topped only by James Roby (56). He also made 67 metres from nine runs. I rated him an "8" for that game.
