I'd like to see the following:

1. CNK/Oldfield
2. Cotric
3. Croker
4. BJ
5. Oldfield/CNK
6. Wighton
7. Sezer
8. Papa
9. Hodgo
10. Sia
11. Tapine
12. Whitehead
13. Bateman

14. Williams
15. Havili
16. Sutton
17. Guler
18. Horsburg
19. Lui
20. Bateman

I want to see 1-13 play 60 minutes (40 minutes for the props). The final 20 minutes can then be an opportunity for a few guys who put in a strong performance last night to have a run.

21. Starling
22. Simonsson
23. Niko
24. Abbey
25. Kris

Reports are that BJ has a hamstring injury should be right to start the season but definitely won’t trial.

I'd like to see Kris get a run. Wouldn't be surprised if it was Bateman

Hmm I suppose Bateman might see some more minutes that way but I'd rather see him getting used to the size and style of NRL forwards than trotting around a centre...

It's a trial and BJ is a lock starter so not a bad time to throw Kris into it.

Canberra Raiders primed for NRL trial against Canterbury Bulldogs at Bega

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart says his team will make the most of their visit to the Bega Valley for a trial match against the Canterbury Bulldogs.

"We'll be there for four or five days in camp and we'll spread ourselves around amongst the town and schools," Stuart said.

The Raiders will also hold a public Captain's Run and Stuart said it would be a great experience to meet some of the NRL players.

I'd like to see the top 17 as the side with 2 extra middle forwards on the bench. No experimenting with the spine positions.

Assuming Joey is out:
1. CNK
2. Cotric
3. Croker
4. Kris
5. Oldfield
6. Wighton
7. Sezer
8. Lui
9. Hodgson
10. Papalii
11. Tapine
12. Whitehead
13. Bateman

14. Havilii
15. Guler
16. Soliola
17. Sutton
18. Bateman
19. Horsburgh
20. Murchie
21. Simmonson
22. Abbey
23. Starling
24. Williams

Hopefully the starters play at least 40-60 minutes. I think it was the 2017 trial where most of the starting 13 played about 15-20 minutes in the only trial? Ridiculous. Very excited for this game.

Surely Starling won't play, he is not in the first grade squad. It would be a waste of a spot.

I'd hope that the starting spine except hooker play nearly the whole game. Giving someone like Williams some time just seems like a waste to me, since we know what he will bring if he comes into the side anyway.

Canberra Raiders name stars for Bulldogs trial

The Canberra Raiders will take their best available squad to Bega, for Saturday’s trial match against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

The likes of Jarrod Croker, Josh Hodgson, Aidan Sezer, Josh Papalii, Elliott Whitehead, Nick Cotric and Sia Soliola will all have their first hit out for the season, while Joe Tapine will back up from his strong performance for the Maori All-Stars on Friday night.

Michael Oldfield, Joey Leilua, John Bateman and Jordan Rapana will miss the match with injury, but all players with the exception of Jordan Rapana will be available for selection in round one.

A number of the clubs’ younger players will get the opportunity to back up from Friday nights trial win against the Eels, with Corey Horsburgh, Hudson Young, Ryan Sutton, Bailey Simonsson, Seb Kris and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad all selected for the Bega trial.

Experienced players Sam Williams and Luke Bateman will also play a part on Saturday.

Raiders Coach Ricky Stuart said he was happy with the performance of the team in their first trial match and the Bega Trial would now feature a stronger squad.

“I was very pleased with how our younger players performed against Parramatta’s NRL players,” Stuart said. “The team we take to Bega will be our strongest team that we have available.”

“We will be looking to give our main squad around 60 minutes and we will be looking to field our strongest team while we’re down there.

“What I really like about our squad is that there is a lot of young players coming through pushing a couple of our senior players which is really healthy competition.”

Stuart said the Raiders were looking forward to getting amongst the community while they were in the region.

“We enjoy getting out to the country areas, we will be heading down for the whole week, we want to buy into the community, all of our training sessions will be open so we would love to see a lot of kids come out and meet the players.”

Well there you go. Lots of players who can't possibly play first grade. Hopefully if they are used it's as a unit and they don't come heavily into the first grade rotation.

There were a few rumours late last year around Abbey possibly going to Superleague weren't there? I wonder if there is a release coming soon given our recruitment of guys like CNK and Simmonson and the fact they have seemingly jumped straight ahead of him in terms of first grade spots/depth

Stuart did not even mention Abbey when discussing potential fullbacks, so you would think he is out the door.

Very surprised Lui was not picked - always puts in a decent effort, you would think it has to be an injury (even though it is not mentioned).

Ricky Stuart: Canberra Raiders new halves pair must prove themselves before round one

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart says his new halves pairing Jack Wighton and Aidan Sezer will have to prove themselves in a trial this week before they get the nod for round one.

"That [round one selection] will come down to their performance this weekend against Canterbury, they have to perform," Stuart said. "We’ve got a couple of other players who can play in those positions as well. Like the players, we’re hoping everybody comes out and trials very well and performance is important."

Maybe he is getting FPNd. It would be pretty odd to give him a decent 3 year deal and drop him/ship him off a few months later though.

It's possible he has a spot already and stuart wants to maximize the fringe forwards in the side to see how they go (despite "strongest lineup"). If it's not though and it's all going off trial form then surely Horsburgh firming for a round 1 bench spot.

Pretty big fall if he goes from starting -> 3 year deal -> missing round 1.

Don’t know about Ricky’s comments about Simonsson being “very good” at the back on Friday. Looked pretty ordinary to me. Would give him a shot on the wing this week though.

The decision oesn't make sense to me. Horsburgh looked much fitter than Lui in the trial. Maybe fitter/younger guys are getting preferential treatment this year? Or maybe it's an early season strategy to combat the heat and late game fade outs?

Yeah I don't get it either. Training has never been an issue with Lui. Maybe it's a kick up the butt because he didn't lead in the trial like expected for one of the senior guys. Guess we'll just have to see what happens with him round 1.
