Picking up Jacks would take our quota of depth halves to 4. And leave our quota of elite halves at 0.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
How does Jacks play? Organiser? Runner?
If it looks like Hingano is shot then at least it provides a solid defensive option if Williams doesn't aim up.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Jacks would be solid for next season. Definitely better to have someone who can challenge Williams for a starting spot than have nobody else.
I've advocated for May from the Panthers but I'd say if the club wanted him we'd have made a play by now.
Putting my attention on Jahrome Hughes. I think he may get the squeeze at the Storm in 2020 with them likely to retain Munster (in my opinion) and Croft nailing the halfback spot in their run to this years GF. Drinkwater looks a special talent who I highly doubt the Storm will let go. Meaning Hughes is the likely odd man out. He would look good in a Geen 1 or 6 jersey. Surely we will have cap space to be players after November 1 for the 2020 Free Agents.

Unlucky Ryley Jacks has contract hope with Canberra Raiders
MELBOURNE playmaker Ryley Jacks is officially the unluckiest bloke in the NRL. Jacks has had three solid contract offers fall through, but has his fingers crossed that the Raiders will come to the party with a deal.
In the past two months, Jacks has been chased by Brisbane, the Titans and Parramatta, only for all three clubs to pull their offers off the table at the eleventh hour. However, Canberra coach Ricky Stuart is said to be a fan of Jacks and the 26-year-old hopes to finalise a deal with the Green Machine over the coming days. Jacks has won 20 of 25 games at the Storm for an excellent 80 per cent success rate but has fallen out of favour with coach Craig Bellamy, who is showing faith in rookie halfback Brodie Croft.

I can't speak for the other teams, but I believe that Brisbane pulled their offer because he doesn't like pies.El_Capitano wrote:I like him but... why are they pulling the offers? Is he a Scientologist?

Will make a great backup hooker now that Hingano has been shifted to the wing

So we are the last club standing. Glad to know we still have the pulling power to attract a solid first grader.
Good be a good foil for Sezer.

Re: Ryley Jacks linked to Canberra Raiders
He’s a very very good defender from what I’ve seen, and a more than handy player in attack.
He’d slot right in at 6 and be a definite upgrade on Williams.

I wrote about this one a couple of months ago, I was told that initial discussions came to nothing, a quite surprising turn of events! Great player.
Re: Ryley Jacks linked to Canberra Raiders
Well, we need another halves player with FG experience. It seems Bellamy has made his half back choice and Croft, Hughes and Drinkwater will be at the Storm in 2019. At 185cm Jacks is tall for a half. Good defender. Could his utility value include full back? Jacks for Jack maybe? It would be interesting to know why the other teams fell off signing him.
Should this signing go ahead, we will have lost two regular FG forwards and replaced them with 2 Englishmen on of whom is a current International. We have lost a 5/8 and possibly picked up Jacks. All three appear to be better defenders (The Raiders biggest weakness) than the players they are replacing. If we can pick up another outside back with FG experience (I understand Robert Jennings is off contract) then we will look much stronger defensively for 2019. We are the second top try scorer in the NRL for 2018. Go Raiders!

I’m a little concerned he’s 26 years old. I thought he must have been younger.

Re: Ryley Jacks linked to Canberra Raiders
His defence is quite solid apparently..much much better than Brake Austin..
My defence is better than Austins so...not much to go on.
26yrs is ok BJ, he's got plenty of time to be part of our premiership window..

The most mediocre of players made to look better in an outstanding team. Great pickup.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

He is a clear upgrade on Austin. Hopefully Ricky doesn't try and over-complicate his role.

Re: Ryley Jacks linked to Canberra Raiders
Its a decent signing if its true, hes a solid player, being from the storm system he knows his role, he only has to be solid in defence, feed his backs good ball and have a kicking game of some sorts, he will play third fiddle to hodgson and to sezer, exactly what he has been groomed to do at the storm.

Re: Ryley Jacks linked to Canberra Raiders
If he'd be third fiddle behind Sezer he must offer very little.
Re: Ryley Jacks linked to Canberra Raiders
I'd hope he is going to be a starting half and Williams will be back in Mounties. There is no reason to sign him as backup.
However it's more realistic he shows up as a bench player after training at hooker full time all offseason.

I still can't believe we re-signed Sezer after 3 miserable seasons here from him.

Re: Ryley Jacks linked to Canberra Raiders
Williams and jacks is more dangerous attacking wise, sezer has proven in 3 years that he is barely first grade level.

Ryley Jacks linked to Canberra Raiders
Other than Sezer I’m trying to think of the last half that came to Canberra Raiders as a regular NRL first grade starter at half..
?Jacks - mostly bench and 2nds
Hingano - 2nds
Williams - Superleague
Cornish - home grown
Austin - bench player
Sezer - first grade starter
Milford - home grown
Cornish - home grown
Campese - home grown
McCrone - home grown
Carney - home grown
Herbert - home grown

It's a stretch but Brad Drew finished his Eels career at halfback and we played him there. Otherwise it's back to the early 80s.Sid wrote: ↑September 23, 2018, 4:45 pm Other than Sezer I’m trying to think of the last half that came to Canberra Raiders as a regular NRL first grade starter at half..

Most of our positions are like that though. Maybe not so extreme but we just don't sign ready made NRL players and keep them in their positions.

Re: Ryley Jacks linked to Canberra Raiders
Matt Orford and Jason Smith both came from SL but had been first-pick starters for a decade?

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Assuming*** there isn't some awfully big skeletons that caused the other clubs to pull out, I think Jacks would be a good pickup.
Big bodied, aggressive defender who only needs to get early ball to the blokes outside him (and run it on occasion to keep the defense honest).
Defensive wise he'd be an upgrade, which is the most important and honestly I think if he doesn't dummy and run every time he'd end up an upgrade offensively.
Add in that we should have a more mobile middle, able to push a cross and help outside and we might not have the
same defensive issues on the edges.
*** I think this is pretty unlikely, happening three times is pretty fishy and suggests there is more too it then just chance.
