Re: John Bateman signs with Canberra Raiders
Canberra certainly are in the right direction signing John Bateman , one tough cookie, looks like all the UK international players will be playing there footy in the NRL in the near future, which has the making for one hell of a test match

I don't follow the ESL so I had absolutely no idea who this guy was. I knew he was vouched for by Whitehead and Hodgson and that was good enough for me to trust he was decent, but I've been blown away in utter delight by how incredibly good he is.
As far as I'm concerned, he's ours now. No take-backs.

I'm attacking in the right way, instead of just...attacking in the general direction. - Max Aaron (also eerily apropos for the Green Machine)

Re: John Bateman signs with Canberra Raiders
I've been a fan of his work since I first saw him play in his first test match. I think I even defended him on here through some of his lesser centre performances. I don't think anyone could have reasonably predicted he was going to go this well. Definitely not this soon.
As much as some people like to promote the ESL there's still a huge week to week gap between the 2 comps but he's not only adjusted to the pace and consistency he actually seems to be getting even better.

I’ll be honest about my Bateman claims.
I saw him play in the centres for England and was not impressed.
I have completely changed my tune. What a footballer.

Re: John Bateman signs with Canberra Raiders
According to the man himself we have a conversation he had with Wayne Bennett to thank for his coming to the NRL. Raiders were interested and when he made the jump it was to us. Given his family situation, of which his behavior is an absolute credit to him, it was a big step to come to Australia.
All 100% effort in attack. As a defensophile, I was concerned with his 6 missed tackles against the Storm. Sticky having Sam ride shotgun for him sure worked against the Knights. Hopefully more of the same this week against the Cowboys.

You have to give credit to the talent spotters, we have seen other NRL clubs fail at overseas signings
Re: John Bateman signs with Canberra Raiders
I thought he might be a bit undersized but the guy is smashing it early days
Re: John Bateman signs with Canberra Raiders
Same. He’s shone in wet weather games where that might help him a bit.
Hope he keeps it up all year- looks like he’s just loving mixing it up and playing his footy too which is a real lift for players and fans. It’s pouring wet, 70 consecutive minutes in, there he is with a huge grin on his face as he flies in at Shannon Boyd once again. Go son!
I’m hoping to see how he goes on the dry and whether he is best on that edge or the middle.
Re: John Bateman signs with Canberra Raiders
Watching him playing in the test match in the U.S I'm very surprised we got him.
He looked all class at centre, natural talent and I'm glad we have him.

Re: John Bateman signs with Canberra Raiders
The way he set up BJ for his second try, with 4 Bronco's on him (ok three and a half as one was Milf) and still got a perfect pass away to the left for BJ to score was sheer footy skill.
But for me the TRY he scored showed his footy smarts. After Sam Williams is tackled near the line, he goes into dummy half and has had a quick look and seen Haas is the nearest defender. Haas is still looking for Hodgo as the dummy half. Knowing the big man is not a great lateral mover he simply goes past him for the try. I'm glad we removed our big men with glacial speed from the roster. Yes they can make good yards, but if they haven't got lateral mobility they are a target in defence. Smart work from JB.

Re: John Bateman signs with Canberra Raiders
He's just a very squirmy kind of bloke to tackle. He wriggles under low and tries to shrug up pop out again (as he does in both those tries you mention actually). He hits and spins. Throws palms out. Props and goes again. In some of the interviews they say he's the best wrestler in the club- I'd believe it he looks like a real nuisance.RedRaider wrote: ↑April 22, 2019, 3:26 pm The way he set up BJ for his second try, with 4 Bronco's on him (ok three and a half as one was Milf) and still got a perfect pass away to the left for BJ to score was sheer footy skill.

I can't believe how good he's playing. Sutton is ok, he's a genuine FG'er but Bateman can find half a dozen ways to just turn a game your way with skill and will.

He has excellent footwork, great balance.
I thinks that's what gives him an edge, apart from just being as hard as nails.

There's no way we're letting John Bateman return to ENG when his contract is up.
We get his daughter here, find her a nice school.
You're going nowhere champ...
