Canberra Raiders recruit John Bateman named Wigan Warriors Player of the Year

Player of the Year - John Bateman

John Bateman is the Player of the Year. Batty, as he is also known, has been exceptional all year in what is his final season with the Club. John is set to join Canberra Raiders next year with teammate Ryan Sutton but his energy, passion and resolve has endeared the former Bradford Bull to the Wigan faithful. A Man of Steel nominee, alongside St Helens’ James Roby and Ben Barba, Bateman’s end of season form was one of the main driving forces behind the Warriors’ push for their fifth Betfred Super League title.

Player’s Player of the Year – John Bateman

The most prestigious award of the night, as voted by his peers went to Bateman. The England international’s inspirational form either as a second row or a make shift centre won the approval of his teammates, as his effervescent personality has always been a favourite on and off the field. Bateman was also named in the 2018 Super League Dream Team alongside his skipper Sean O’Loughlin. He said: “I love playing rugby with these set of lads and I always try to do my best. This Club has given me the opportunity and I can’t thank them enough.”

Bring it on. He sounds like a real goer. Love watching blokes that give it 100% each week play.

I'm not the political correct type so sounds like a top bloke, woke up the other day from a 2 day bender after winning and posted about it on Twitter.

If I was smart I would have posted it, sounds like a likeable person from his Twitter account.

Sorry if mentioned but does he play left edge, right edge or both when 2nd row and centre?

I've seen limited footage of him.

Only at centre and he's played both sides but mostly right.

Hope this helps.

I hope he ends up at 5/8 and plays a Greg Bird type role, without the off field stuff.

That’d be interesting.

I wonder what he would think about that if it wasn’t discussed in contract negotiations???

I don't. I know the halves and defence situation is dire, but it seems a bit odd to buy the best forward in Superleague to then try to convert him into a first choice half rather than trying to get a half.
Is there anything to suggest he'd be a better half option than Elliott Whitehead?

Also he'd lose his utility value as you generally wouldn't move a first choice spine player to cover
for an injured player in another position.

Maybe we'll just call his position inside centre or outside second row.

New Canberra Raiders English recruit John Bateman hopes language barrier isn’t huge in Australia

JOHN Bateman hopes his rugby ability does not get lost in translation – after being driven barm-y in an extraordinary row over bread. One of the more unlikely things he will have to conquer is a language barrier, namely different terms for things Down Under.

“I was in a fish and chip shop in Wigan when I first moved there and I wanted what I call a teacake,” recalled Bateman. “But the woman serving me was having none of it, she had a full on argument with me until I called it a barm cake! I’ve not even asked what they are called in Canberra, I’ll just ask Elliott Whitehead. I’ll probably have to speak to him or Josh Hodgson about what things are called there.

My tip for John..

If you see a person crying uncontrollably in the street..

They are probably a Raiders fan.

So don't think consoling them will help..

So it’s not a cake at all. It’s just a bread roll.

My tip for John..

On the way to your first home match pick a Raiders fan up from a bus stop and give them a lift to the game.
They will get a free ride and in turn Ricky and the fans will give you a free ride in the team for several seasons.

Sorry Greensted, that's a cake. Admittedly, you may have it with tea, but it's not a teacake.

If you offered teacakes as a method of payment, you'd interest the Yorkshire players, but not the rest.

They would expect rolls, barms, baps or cobs.

They're all the same thing. Just a bread roll.

Canberra Raiders recruit ‘Grub’ John Bateman aims for the top after NRL switch

JOHN Bateman is ready to bring his ‘grubby’ skills to Australia’s NRL – and he is hell bent on reaching the very top. Former Warriors clubmate Sutton tipped Bateman for big things with the strange-sounding complement: “I know what John can bring. He’s not the biggest but as we say back home, he’s a grub.”

Bateman said: “It’s a massive test in Australia week in, week out but I enjoyed myself playing New Zealand. I went into it thinking, ‘Right, I’ll see where I’m at.’ I’ll head to Canberra a couple of months before the start of the season to get in the right condition. I’ll see where my body can go but I want to get right to the top.”

Remember whiteheads first couple of games in 30 degree + weather i think we played the panthers in an ugly game full of thuggish behaviour because the heat was making everyone angry and then the roosters.

He looked like he was going to die at the end of the game lol. The nrl is a tough comp but those were real welcome to the nrl conditions

The best story was Hodgson out here for the four nations just before he joined us and after he played Australia he was like **** these guys are freakish athletes i best be rocking up to canberra asap and he showed up earlier than he had to just to try and prepare for the nrl.

I think we need a bit of grubby action in the rucks. Hodgson is the only guy who really works the rucks. That said his size is a bit of a concern. Still gotta give the guy a chance to get used to the pace of the nrl for the above reasons. Its a tough comp

I do distinctly remember those early Whitehead games. He looked shagged after 15-20 mins- like honestly dying, not just pro sport tired- so I kept watching for Ricky to sub him off off or him to start getting lazy. But he kept turning up for runs, running support, sliding and staying alive inside. I think he dropped the odd ball or missed a single significant 1 on 1 on there somewhere but jees I was impressed he just kept turning up in defence and dropping guys when I thought he was going to look for a rest. Showed character.

When I used to live in Oz I'd always see Whitehead and Hodgo (occasionally another guy with them) doing extras in CISAAC gym also. Thorough professionals. :thumbsup

I like this. We need our own grub. Tapine has valiantly attempted to fill the role but he's better suited to being a skills player.

Not many Poms have starred in the NRL taking into account the era they came here.

I can remember Kevin Ward who joined Manly. Ellery Hanley was all headlines and didn't shine, even though he was massive in England. Chariots turned up..did squat. Gary Schofield was adequate, Brian Carney..squat. Ellis had a dig at Tigers I spose. The Burgess boys have been hot and cold. Same as Widdop..average.

But we've been very lucky..Whitehead, Hodgo and now Bateman( I hope).

I'm looking forward to seeing him play, by all reports we scored another good-un.
