While I'm not optimistic for next year Austin leaving will definitely be a boost. You can just see his poor attitude out there is really infecting the team.

Stuart has lost the plot if Hingano starts over Williams.

Sezar and Williams both offer the same though. Hingano does offer a bit of zip

Ricky spent the whole year training Hingano to be a dummy half, so it makes sense he would pick him at 5/8th.

It's not contentious. Jack Wighton will be starting No. 6 next year. There is no other real option.

Nice to see Ricky helping the Eels and Titans for 2019 but giving plenty of minutes to Paulo and Boyd.

If he were playing at first grade standard, perhaps, but he was not close this year.

The trouble is... I don't believe we can depend on a Sezer/Williams halves pairing.

Wighton is our best fullback.

John Bateman offers us the mongrel in defence we haven't seen since Nev Costigan or Josh Miller. I hope he starts at lock.

If Cotric moves I hope it's only into the centres to replace numbnuts Leilua.

I’ll get crucified for this so I’ll just lay down the cross and nails.

Our only positive as an individual in attacking structures this entire season has been Wighton’s play from fullback. He was not far short of sensational all year as a second and third receiver. As soon as he was gone we predictably lost all connection from mid field to the backline. For us to have the highest paid (and best attacking wise) three quarters in the competition with Cotric at fullback would be absolute suicide. (So we know Stuart will do it)

You can keep a mediocre half there, or use Whitehead at 6 who struggled in attack for the most part in an edge. The option (which won’t be considered) I’d consider is Croker to 6 or left half. It’s a more assured body than Williams/Hingano, it gets Cotric to centre and we deadset have not had any footy smarts there for 24 months so we’re not losing anything. It sounds absolutely stupid but if we don’t recruit anyone I’m not convinced it isn’t the worst option. If you have Hodgson, Sezer and Wighton there, Whitehead ball playing at lock I think it could work.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Unless some miracle signing shows up soon, I can't imagine what else Stuart will do.

I don't disagree with it, either. If we could just stem some of the points leakage through the halves, we'd win games.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

If we think Wighton will be 6, Stuart will be looking deeper than us and will likely spend the offseason converting Havilli to play 6 or something.

Preparing for 2019

Post by Dusty »

I do like the idea of Wighton at 6 purely for his defence. If he does end up there he needs to be a run first pass second player, the 3rd kicking option and not the organiser.

I’m not yet convinced Cotric is the answer at fullback. I believe Jack is much better there. I agree that we get more from Cotric on the wing.

I also agree that Sam Williams isn’t our problem. A bloke on a small wage doing a solid job.

In saying that my team for 2019 would be:

1. Wighton
2. Cotric
3. Croker
4. Leilua
5. Rapana
6. Sezer
7. Williams
8. Sutton
9. Hodgson
10. Papalii

The fact is makes sense and there is strong consensus means there is a good chance this won't happen, possibly out of spite as well.

I guess it's hard to judge Cotric at fullback without a quality left edge to take some load, maybe with wighton at 6 and Croker back it changes the necessity of cotric to be the goto

Todd is coming home, why do you think he returned to Sydney for personal reasons to suddenly end up in the UK being coached by Tim Sheens.

Preparing for 2019

Post by LastRaider »

Come on guys, there will be no real change to the team. It will be a repeat of this year, which is a repeat of the 2017 side really.

It will be the predictable following:

1. Wighton
2. Cotric
3. Croker
4. Leilua
5. Rapana
6. Sezar
7. Williams
8. Sololia
9. Hodgson
10. Lui
11. Tapine
12. Whitehead
13. Papilii

14. Hingano
15. Havilii
16. L.Bateman
17. J Bateman

You all know it will be

He's never picking a bench that looks like that.

Edit:
Making a point of how things will be the same then picking a bench that is nothing like 2017 or 2018 in structure, philosophy or personnel :hmmm

14. Baptiste
15. Soliola
16. Lui
17. Havili

Sezer and Williams will be our halves next season.

Ricky knows football better than anyone. And if he says they are our best halves, then they are. End of story. His success and track record of rebuilding clubs to premiership success shows that you do not question his motives. The only people that stand in his way from 16 straight premierships are the refs.

And those pricks don't know what they are doing.

It's what i always say, if you have halves who can defend their position, you can be a solid team. The teams that stink in this league are the ones with multiple pressure points on the edge

If you can defend at the 11-12 3-4 and 6-7. You're going to be a top 8 team.

Preparing for 2019

A lot of people seem to think that moving Wighton to 6 automatically solves a defensive issue on the right edge. Sure he can tackle better then any other half we have had in a while but defending 3 in is a skill set in itself.

Yeah there's no perfect solution with the current roster. Every fix presents it's own set of issues.
Even getting rid of the 2 fat forwards will have some negatives but you'd hope the positive increase in lateral movement will far outweigh the negative issues that come with a smaller pack. We lose that occasional game where Boyd or Paulo could just dominate but we hopefully get some defensive consistency.
Jack being moved, likewise, he's a great defender but we won't really know until he spends a good 5 rounds there as it's the decision making that really makes or breaks the position. You can't see him being a worse decision maker than Austin and he's definitely better 1 on 1 than Williams. He's also got the acceleration and motivation to help cover mistakes.

Ignoring the position argument there's still a lot of signing/re-signing to be announced to fill out the top 30 squad for next year. At the moment:

Raiders
1. Jack Wighton
2. Nick Cotric
3. Jarrod Croker
4. Joey Leilua
5. Jordan Rapana
6. Aidan Sezer
7. Sam Williams
8. Josh Papalii
9. Josh Hodgson
10. Sia Soliola
11. John Bateman
12. Joseph Tapine
13. Elliot Whitehead

14. Siliva Havili
15. Jack Murchie
16. Emre Guler
17. Dunamis Lui

Mounties
1. Brad Abbey
2. Michael Oldfield
3. Seb Kris (not signed yet)
4.
5.
6. Ata Hingano
7. Brendan O'Hagan (not signed yet)
8. Liam Knight
9.
10. Ryan Sutton
11.
12.
13. Luke Bateman

14.
15. Corey Horsburgh (not signed yet)
16. Setefano Hala (not signed yet)
17.

Even with what's been guessed we are still 3 players off. If you look at every position that hasn't actually been signed it's 7 still to sign.
