Playing the whistle

Post by Lucy »

You have to play the whistle. You are a first grade team. It's Rugby League 101.

The below is a whistle.

You play to that. Image

ordinarily I'd agree but when the touchy put the flag up the ref stopped and put the whistle to his mouth, that's enough to stop

Actually its not.
And im very **** proud of Stuart for not going down this path... i havent watched it but apparently he is exactly where he should be... play the whistle.

Ive got no problem with the on field officials. The video ref has no conclusive evidence to overturn that though.

No, it's not. The whistle is a squeaky noise that comes from the little thing with the pea in the refs hand.

It is not a flag.

But the only thing that stops a game is a whistle.

And there was no whistle.

Play on.

Whistle was not sounded. But a flag was raised

Tell me Lucy, oh Oracle of Rugby League, why a player should not..... oh forget it.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Playing the whistle.

Post by Sid »

Players said the referee also called “knock on” on top of the flag going up and the whistle going up to the mouth and the ball actually being knocked on.

I think that’s enough to warrant stopping

Also I can see a lot of late dangerous hits on players from the Raiders now if they either don’t hear a call or wait all the way to the whistle. Remember Shannon Boyd’s late hit on gallens leg when he was in the act of tackling just after the whistle.. a dog shot.. or playing the whistle and being a little late?

What does the rule book say? Is the linesmans flag merely a symbolic thing with no actual power to ajudicate the game? I just assumed that if you put your foot into touch and the touchy raises his flag that their decision is final.

By the logic of the OP, you have to drop a player twice over the sidelines to be sure.

Seems your sanity is in question... yes I agree that players should play the whistle - but that was the most no-brainer decision ever. Which I guess is why Roach and the Bunker similarly got it wrong. Frankly if the Bunker made their decision on the back of the video the tv audience was looking at, they should hand their licences in - were they seriously trying to detect changes in the rotation of the football rather than a look at whether or not the player's hands touched the ball?

I knew they would decide the way they did though. Confirmation bias anyone?

Bateman and one other player were directly in line with the touch judge and saw the flag go up their automatic reaction would be to stop you can’t blame them, the other players then saw Bateman point at the touchy and stopped, the ref also had the whistle in his mouth and the sharks also stopped, there is no way that should have been a try...but why the touchy put his flag up for a knock on should also be questioned?!?!

A touchy can put his flag up, but if the whistle isn't blown and the ref overrules, it's play on.

I actually thought I heard a whistle, but if I want to sleep tonight I just can't look at the replay.

Every game features players not playing to the whistle. Players stop for knock ons or the touchie putting his flag up and the play ends then and there.

It’s just very rare that the bunker gets involved, the controlling ref ignores the touch judge and he puts his mouth to the whistle.

While I agree that players should obey the whistle. The actual issue is that NRL refs don’t always blow the whistle for every infringement they call. Watch for it live at the game. Sometimes they talk the decision, not blow their whistle to award the decision.

Yep, so the players should continue to tackle a player into the advertising boards when they are meters out of play, the flag has gone up but the whistle has not yet sounded.

Ok, lets say we have to do our bit and play to the whistle, that doesnt take away from the farcical way the ref and touchy officiated it. Especially if the ref called knock on. There was a whole lot of doubt created that comes down to them.

Not to mention the awful video ref call.

If he played the whistle it's entirely likely the try isnt scored and the farcical way the ref and touchy officiated it doesnt hurt us.
There is two issues here:

1. Why did the video ref overrule it when there was no evidence to do so
2. Why didnt we play the whistle.

The rest is white noise imo.

Flag and the ref hasn’t stopped play...the players who saw the flag go up had every right to believe that play would be stopped
