Canberra Raiders V Cronulla Sharks
Friday 20 July 6:00pm

Tickets: Click here
TV coverage: Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, 2CC, Mix 106.3
Weather: Windy. Partly cloudy. Partly cloudy, clearing in the evening. Winds northerly 15 to 20 km/h turning westerly 25 to 40 km/h in the morning. Chance of any rain: 0 per cent. Min 11 Max 18

Round 18 2018. Canberra Raiders 38 - North Queensland Cowboys. It was tight for 65 minutes, very tight, but in the end it was comprehensive. The Raiders lost their captain, Jarrod Croker, after he dislocated his knee cap in the first half. And despite scoring three tries in the first 40 minutes, Canberra let North Queensland back into the match - and led by just two points at the break. And the score remained unchanged for the first, tense 25 minutes in the second half. Johnathan Thurston repeatedly looked like he'd break the Raiders' hearts... but their goal line defence was desperate. The Raiders saved at least three tries by the barest of margins. Finally, the Cowboys' own defensive line broke, repeatedly, with the Raiders running in four tries in the final 15 minutes.

More on Round 18: As I saw it

In Round 19, the Raiders head to The Shire for a meeting with the Cronulla Sharks. For the Raiders, Brad Abbey (concussion) returns to fullback, with Nick Cotric shifting back to his regular wing spot. Michael Oldfield takes over from captain Jarrod Croker (knee) at centre. After the team was announced, however, news broke that Aidan Sezer had suffered a hamstring injury during goal kicking practice... so he will also be out, with Blake Austin coming into the halves. The team is otherwise unchanged from the one that defeated the Cowboys last week. For the Sharks, the only team change sees Jesse Ramien return at centre in place of Kurt Capewell (finger).

Late changes: Jack Murchie will debut off the bench for the Raiders, with Aidan Sezer (hamstring) dropping out of the squad and Blake Austin moving into the starting team at five eighth. Emre Guler was the other player omitted from the squad on Friday night, with Craig Garvey and Royce Hunt remaining on the reserves list. Kurt Dillon and Kyle Flanagan dropped out of the Sharks squad on Friday night.

History: The Raiders have won only 33 of 73 matches against the Cronulla Sharks, for a 43 per cent win rate. Canberra has won four of the past 10 clashes between the clubs. In that time, the Raiders have lost every match played against the Sharks at Canberra Stadium... and won every match between the two teams at Shark Park. But until recent times, Shark Park was a hoodoo venue for the Green Machine. Canberra has won just 12 of 32 matches the clubs have played at Cronulla. Earlier this year, the Sharks won the Round 10 match against the Raiders at Canberra Stadium, 30-12.

2016 Qualifying Final Canberra Raiders V Cronulla Sharks

In this week’s "History Happens", we go back to Week 1 of the 1989 finals. The Sharks had been forced into a mid week playoff against the Brisbane Broncos, just to qualify in fifth place... and they proved no match for a Canberra Raiders team on their way to a maiden premiership. The Sharks put up a good fight, but the Raiders ran away with it in the end, 31-10.

1989 Minor Preliminary Canberra Raiders V North Queensland Cowboys

Form: The Sharks have a LWLWW record in their past five matches, with their recent losses coming against the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Brisbane Broncos. In their last outing, the Sharks won 24-12 against the Panthers at Penrith. The Raiders are on a LWLWW form line.

Betting: The Sharks are warm $1.48 favourites in the match, with the Raiders paying $2.67. The Raiders have 5.5 points start in the line betting. The Raiders' odd have lengthened over the week.

Stat attack: It is a clash between sixth (Sharks) and ninth (Raiders) on the competition ladder. The Raiders have a 8 and 9 record in 2018, while the Sharks are 11 and 6. Canberra has played six matches against top eight teams and is yet to win one. The Sharks have won four of nine matches against top eight sides.

The Raiders (424 points, 71 tries) are now just marginally behind the No. 1 ranked attacking team, the South Sydney Rabbitohs (425 points, 72 tries). The Sharks rank seventh in the league in attack (just under 20 points and three tries scored per match, compared with 25 points and four tries per match for the Raiders). The Sharks, however, have a better defensive record, with the Raiders conceding an average of 21 points (3.3 tries) per game, the Sharks 17 (2.8 tries).

The Raiders are the only team in the bottom eight with a positive points differential (+62), and have a better points differential than the three teams above them - including the Sharks (Broncos -26, Warriors +10, Sharks +42).

The Sharks average slightly more running metres (Cowboys 1496m, Raiders 1451m per match) and kicking metres (Sharks 454m, Raiders 395m per match). The Raiders have a slightly better completion rate (Raiders 78 per cent, Sharks 76 per cent); both teams average 10 errors and concede nine penalties per game. Surprisingly, the Sharks make more offloads (12-9 per match on average), but the Raiders shade the Sharks in line breaks (Raiders five, Sharks four per match).

The teams have a similar tackle efficiency rate (Sharks missing 30 of 342 tackles required on average per match, the Raiders missing 31 of 340).

Our tip: Once more, this match is a must win for the Canberra Raiders if they're to keep their slender top eight hopes alive. It's a big ask. The Raiders are significantly impacted by injury and suspension. The Sharks are in good form, and have a good record against Canberra. The Sharks love to niggle, get in the grind, and defend strongly - and that takes the Raiders out of their comfort zone. On the plus side, the Raiders have the advantage in attack. In addition, they have produced some big performances against Cronulla in recent years at Shark Park. Last year, Canberra pulled off a memorable victory at the venue to keep their season alive. The head keeps telling me that the Sharks will win this match. I’ve had a sneaking feeling that the Raiders would pull off upset... but the loss of Aidan Sezer might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Sharks should win... but what a back to the wall victory it’ll be if the Raiders get the upset.

What they’re saying

Luke Bateman on the loss of Jarrod Croker: "Losing captain is like losing a limb really. Everyone looks up to him, he’s played over 200 games and the experience he brings and calmness he brings to the team is huge. We don’t probably have any left centre specialists in the wings so losing him is massive for us.

Siliva Havili: "It’s a big loss, Toots [Jarrod Croker], for the club and for the team itself. We’ve got Hodgo [Josh Hodgson] and we’ve got Sia [Soliola], we’ve got a lot of senior players that can take on that leadership role and it’s something all the boys will be used to because Hodgo and that are pretty much leaders themselves."

Surprisingly, the Sharks make more offloads (12-9 per match on average)
With known offload merchants Gallen, Fifita and Woods in your side you'd be expecting a lot of offloads.

Deja Vu. Feels like we're in this position every year when we play the sharks at Cronulla. Then we beat them and everyone goes berserk and says we'll make a charge to the 8 and we fall in a heap.

Another game I can't catch live but when I do see it hoping it's got more of the same from last week. Specifically:

Papa who seemed to be there to tackle lolo eveytime he ran, hope he gets the same mission for Fifi.

Pressure on the kicker; both Hodgo and Lui came up with good kick pressure in the first half earning us a 7 tackle set and an out on the full turnover (Lui really impressed me again last week as that pressure came towards the end of his 30min stint, as did being the first to dive on a cowboys error). Combined with our patient and accurate kicking this made such a big difference. Every week please!

Not dwelling on errors: The kickoff whoopsie between rapa and whitehead, It was nice to see them not blow up too hard at each other and instead seemed to accept it and adjust for the next time.

All of those things strike me as attitude, which makes watching the games so much more pleasing. Please please show that sort of effort again this week!

Psychologically the sharks have the wood on us.
It tends to be either team smashes the other at this time of year but when the game is on the line they are usually too tough. I think we might get there today because we need to

At this point in the season and looking at the probables one of the best things we can hope for now is to disrupt Cronulla's season. God I despise them.

I'm happy for Murchie but jeez our bench looks like the most likely way we'll lose this match and it would be much much better with Sia coming off the bench to lead it. Tapine needs to have a good hard think about the bonehead footy he plays to put him out of games like this.

our strength was our bench, that ability to bring Lui and another prop on plus Bateman and lift the energy go forward. That just looks beige, Murchie and Knight are 2 guys I want to see playing as I think they both have we nrl careers in front of them but without another big body/experienced prop I dunno how they deal with the fifita/gallen/prior/Graham scragging

This is gonna go one of two ways:

Option A: We're fired up and ready to go, relishing our underdog status, willing to prove everyone wrong, and ready to save our season. We play our best ludicrously brilliant football, and defend with heart. We win.

Option B: All of the changes wreak havoc not only on our defensive line but attacking options. Hodgo stretches himself too thin trying to control the attack and be captain. Our inexperienced bench finds themselves overrun. We get demolished badly.

I'm still not 100% sure which option is more likely tonight. I just feel like A would be something we'd do in this completely hopeless situation, but our season points towards B being more likely.

We're gonna miss the captain, but I'll also wager we'll find ourselves missing Sezer a lot more than some here would have expected to tonight.
And to all the people who doubted me, hello to them as well. - Mark Webber, Raiders Ballboy and Unluckiest F1 Driver Ever

I'm attacking in the right way, instead of just...attacking in the general direction. - Max Aaron (also eerily apropos for the Green Machine)

I'll be intrigued as to how this bench is used. Knight must surely play close to 35 instead of his usual 15.

Just glad this game isnt in Canberra - it’s freezing and windy. Horrible conditions. Hopefully Shark Park is slightly milder.
Go Raiders! Dont get into the niggle - keep on the attack and back each other up. Defend, defend, defend. You can do this!!
When I saw Gerard Sutton was ref, my heart sank! What’s the bet we get penalised about 5 times in the first 10 minutes? Im reaching for the tranquillisers already!!

Ricky Stuart says that he was going to play Nick Cotric at fullback and Blake Austin at centre... until the hamstring injury for Aidan Sezer. Presumably the team list was a SMOKESCREEN! Cotric may still play at the back at times tonight.

Don't forget, Josh Hodgson and Jordan Rapana will be on Sunday Night with Matty Johns on Fox League.

I remember watching Corey Parker for the Broncos. If he was separating them in warm ups he wouldn’t miss during games. If he was on target then he’d be all over the shop when it counted.
