Another good one to lock away.

Michael Oldfield re-signs with Canberra Raiders to end 2020

The Canberra Raiders continue to secure their squad for the future, with Michael Oldfield agreeing to a new two-year deal with the Green Machine. Oldfield's re-signing keeps him in Canberra until the end of the 2020 season.

"I'm really enjoying my time here in Canberra and to sign a new two-year deal is great for my career," Oldfield said. "It's great that Ricky and the coaching staff have given me the opportunity to get into the NRL team over the past few weeks and I'm really enjoying my footy at the moment."

Another good depth signing.
Also worth noting, he hit 36km/hr on the straight run for his 3rd try the other night. That's Addo-Carr, Holmes, Tommy Turbo speed.

Great news. I think he is better than depth and hope he retains his spot for a long time.

His speed through that hole was impressive, didn't realise he was that quick

Just like Havili, Oldfield has put on quality displays every time he has been in FG. Congrats to him. Hopefully he goes as well at center as he has on the wing. Well done again to DFJ.

Very happy with this. I was always impressed from his debut with us against Souths last year.
I’m a fan of BJ but I would almost warm to the idea of letting him go and giving Oldfield the wing spot and Cotric to Centre.
At least with Oldfield you know you will get a solid weekly performer, where BJ is just rocks or diamonds

Been so impressed with him to bits since he got here and he's really risen to the occasion. Well earned!

I'm attacking in the right way, instead of just...attacking in the general direction. - Max Aaron (also eerily apropos for the Green Machine)

Not as crazy as it sounds. Cotric will add as much to an attack as BJ by not year, he's just as quick, breaks as many tackles, not quite as much mayhem and a slicker operator and sharper footy brain already.

Canberra Raiders re-sign winger Michael Oldfield

Canberra Raiders winger Michael Oldfield hopes an extended stint in the Green Machine will launch him into Tonga contention - and a potential dream clash against Australia.

"That's only going to help me there. With Tonga we're blessed with an abundance of talent out there [on the edges] and I'm just happy to be in that pool. If I could hopefully snag a spot in the future I'd love it," he said.

Yeah, didn't realise he was that fast until he made that break. Might even have Rapana covered for speed.

We've only really seen him in short bursts. Either finishing off a try or taking hit ups. He's always looked a good mover and gets across the turf easily. Obviously has plenty up his sleeve when he hits open space.

If we really are as tight on the cap as what everyone is saying then football
Wise if you take the assault charge out of it and judge it just on what gives us a better chance in 2019 then this is a much better move than sacking Wighton as a lot of people have suggested.
I’d only consider it if we had a decent half lined up but if we needed to offload a player on decent coin then Leilua is probably the first to get the tap, we’d
Have Cotric and John Bateman to cover his spot or Wighton if we wanted to give the fullback spot to Cotric

Of course I meant to say to release BJ purely from a cap point of view if it helps us get a decent half.

Good news.

He's a solid player without being spectacular. Been around a few clubs, and I bet he's happy to have secured a 2 year deal to stay in Canberra.

I vaguely recall when he was at Manly there was a lot of excitement about his speed.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Yeah I remember that also. I was a fan of his in Manly, and joins a trio of players I liked watching at other clubs, who sign for Canberra.

The others were Rapana and Sandor

One issue for Michael is his error rate. Rapana and Sezer have a higher one, but Oldfield is averaging one a game (equal third with Abbey)... and they seem to come at the wrong time/place.

Yeah, Michael Oldfield has always been lightning quick, so I figure it must be his error rate or defence that has been keeping him from being an NRL starter for just about his entire career across several clubs.

True, but Rapana was the same for a while until he got it sorted. I think Oldfield will get better the more games he plays in this regard. He often hits the line hard and tries to get as quick a play the ball as possible, just needs to scale this back a bit at times.

I have no truck resigning players who prove consistent form, but Raiders have once again locked themselves into a contract situation based on impulse rather than after careful thought and consideration. He may be fast but Oldfield lacks the basic skills required to be an NRL footballer. I guess thats why despite searing pace he’s never really made it at this level.
