Siliva Havili's Canberra Raiders future guaranteed ahead of Josh Hodgson return

Canberra Raiders hooker Siliva Havili's future is guaranteed for another two years just as England rake Josh Hodgson could make an early return from a knee reconstruction.

“We hope to have that finalised in the next 24 hours. He's made the most of every opportunity," Mulholland said. "He only needed to be given an opportunity. He's been a wonderful substitute for Josh Hodgson and the fact he can play 13 as well as he can play nine has made him even more valuable."

Well done - deserved a contract with his performance and application this season.

Very happy to have him continue on with our club.

Hopefully the club got it right and signed him for minimum wage.

Another good off season of fitness will do him wonders. Really developing into a good player. I think the Raiders are a great place for him to develop his skills.

I keep saying to make him our starting 9. His bodyshape is perfect to stand in the middle and do the job. Play Hodgson at 7 early and if he needs to roll into 9 during the game so be it. It gives a different bench dynamic depending on who we have there but at least we're playing football. We have to do something different.

I hope to be reading later today that he has actually signed with the Raiders. This is wonderful news. He has all the skills needed to be a fine player at FG level. His passing game is top notch as is his defence. He has showed a good scoot out of dummy half and not afraid to kick the ball either. Get it done Don.

Papa should be back in town later today. Hopefully Don can meet him at the airport, contract in hand. Get it done Don.

It's amazing how many unconfirmed "done deals" there are. It seems Mulholland likes to come out saying these resignings are "all but done" and "just finalising a few things".

Sezer supposedly a "done deal" for another two years, yet nothing. Papa supposedly a "done deal" for 3-4 years, yet nothing. Now Havili is supposedly a "done deal" for two years, nothing. And Boyd and Paulo have jumped ship.

It's like the Raiders are trying to convince people to stay based on their team mates resigning, when none of them (other than Bateman - yay  ) have actually done so.

How much do you think Hodgson’s contract is worth ?

I’d say he is on something between $850 - $1mil pa.

If we are going to pay a bloke that sort of coin then that bloke better damn well play up to his contract value and give that value to the team.

Signing a world class hooker and paying him marquee money on the cap only to play him out of position.

What kind of form at all has Hodgson shown that he is a $1mil halfback ?

I agree though that we have to do something different, I don’t doubt that at all and this move is something different. But in all of this you still need to be getting the most out of your cap which I highly doubt this would be doing.

I get the argument that Hodgo isn't a 1 million halfback, but we are looking at having two 200k halves otherwise. We have no money in the cap.

Awesome news. We couldn't really ask for a better substitute considering we had low expectations.

Good on him. Good player.

I hope he gets used to spell both Hodgo at hooker and Papa at lock so he gets enough minutes to be useful. He can handle the defence no worries and is a wiser choice to make yards up the middle plus add something with his hands and spark at lock too.

This is exactly what I think will and should happen. Obviously it depends on the make up of the rest of our bench too.

Hopefully there is a clause about kicking field goals....

hard to kick a ball with tree trunks

i think hodgson is a smart enough player to be our halfback, considering the other options we have.

hopefully he has been googling "game management" during his time off

Prefer one about attempting field goals. Not much danger of him kicking one.

I think the standard Raiders clause is don't know the score or understand the situation of the match. They must have rushed his contract through as showed far too much match awareness after his halfback ran it on a crucial play.

Great to see (assuming it actually happens) that Havili is getting a decent contract and we are keeping him.

As for how to best use him, Stuart is still our coach... I'm assuming the plan is to leave him on the bench for 75 minutes then throw him on with 5 to go and we just gave up our lead to try and pull some miracle out of the ashes... Seems to be our go to plan every week.

Tonight’s match shows exactly why we shouldn’t be spending anymore than close to minimum $ for the guy.

As much as he has shown and yes - he is a 1st grade standard hooker. We have a Superstar at 9 and 3 international 80 minute backrowers on the books.

I really like the man and want him in our 14 - but going forward he really isn’t getting more than 10 odd minutes a match.

I doubt he will be on big $

I hope we aren't stupid enough to make the same mistake we did with Baptiste, tying him to big coin for minimal output

Yeah, as good as Havili has been we saw in that game the difference a top class hooker makes. I think his value at 14 could be more than just a few cameos at dummy half. He's quite a capable middle forward and could easily come into that rotation. No reason he can't play 30-40 mins in the middle and slot into dummy half if Hodgo needs a spell.
