Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
Some of you folk are very hard to please. A chance to bolster the squad with an England rep player, who scores tries at that level, and wants to prove himself in the NRL gets bagged as not being good enough for our failing team?? Wow. On another topic, Wighton’s case is coming up soon. EDIT

It's not that he's not good enough, for me it's about where he fits at what $$ we'd have to pay?
If he comes and plays 13 and papa goes to prop is that better than buying a decent prop at the same $$? He's a current English rep so I'd assume he's in that $400k range, so would we be better off with a $400k 40 to 50min prop with papa an 80min 13? I'm not sure.

Players at that level are well capable of playing in numerous positions. I’m sure Ricky will be able to find one for him. I’d certainly prefer a proven international over an unproven prop (which is all $400k will get you). In any case, I’m not convinced on the big bopper strategy - certainly didn’t do us much good this or last year.

Yep pretty standard around here. Actually pretty standard in Australian Rugby League too be honest. There is an air of arrogance about the game and a lot of fans in this country.PhilY wrote:Some of you folk are very hard to please. Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
It's nothing to do with arrogance. I watch these players before commenting and I was the biggest cheerleader of the Whitehead signing on here. He is a decent enough player and if they do fit him in people will like him because he puts in, but for me he makes no sense as a priority to sign.
It feels like a signing they are chasing because they have a chance of actually getting him.

Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
They were replacing Jarrad Kennedy and Glenn Buttriss. It was short odds they were going to be some sort of upgrade.
Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
Granted it's getting better, but this a competition where our worst halves win their POTY award. Where their best players come here and fail more often than not.100%green wrote: ↑June 25, 2018, 8:21 amYep pretty standard around here. Hodgson/Whitehead/Burgess... these sort of guys are the exception, the rule is the Chris Thorman types. We're right to be skeptical of these english players making it here. It's not arrogance, it's factual history of the success rate.

Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
Pommie forwards have a good history, all the way back to Mal Reilly and Vince Karalius, up to Morley, Gareth Ellis, and the Burgess boys.
Pom backs like Andy Gregory, Schofield, Davies, Edwards, never really lived up to the hype.
Chris Thorman is a low blow! As bad as Jordan Turner

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Bateman isn’t that small he’s on par with Whitehead just not as wide in the chest/shoulders

Nor is he as big in the Quads, Calves, biceps, lats and forearms. But I think his Spleen size is on par with Whitehead.Nadruku wrote:Bateman isn’t that small he’s on par with Whitehead just not as wide in the chest/shoulders

So if I understand correctly, if a Pom with Gregory type skills came available to the Raiders as a Half, we’d knock him back?

If John Bateman wants to come he’ll be a great signing.
We do need Andy Gregory as well... Well the Andy Gregory from 30 years ago!

I’d love him. He’d certainly give the refs a work out as well!!

Yeah but does his manager own a pen?
Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
I reckon he's coming to play 6, just a hunch.

This Bateman to 6 rumour is getting some traction!! Where has it started? Because I don’t see it

Seems odd why not target an actual 6 from the ESL like George Williams instead of a makeshift 6??

Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
Bateman has never played 5/8th and has no real kicking or passing game. Whitehead would be more suited.
Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
You mean stick has come around to my Whitehead permantly in the halves plan. Good stuff, Smelly can do no wrong. Next step is to give him both halves slots and just play a 2nd fullback (maybe Cotric back there and promote another winger).

I was a fan of Hodgson's when he was with Hull KR. I liked how he would go from hooker into the halves and create more opportunities for his players.VictorTheViking wrote: ↑June 25, 2018, 1:45 pm Whitehead or hodgson werent that impressive to start with either when it was first said we were chasing them

Bateman is a good back-rower, which means Sia or Papalii can move into the front row when Boyd and Jnr go. I honestly don't rate Gubb and the other options are works in progress. Knight might surprise us with more game time.

Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
Too much hate on Gubb. He's a depth player, nothing more. He was solid before he got injured. That's all I expected.
If anyone expected him to be Klemmer or Fifita that's your bad!
Gubb is a squad filler. Another Clay Priest, if you will.
