Plenty of room if you rebuild the convention centre as part of it, I'd have thought

If you demolished the casino, the office blocks, the convention centre and apartments, it could fit on that block, probably while retaining Glebe Park... Glebe Park will be heritage of some sort, but probably not anything else on that block. You wouldn't need to do anything to Constitution Avenue. Suspect the building owners might have something to say about it though!

Alternatively, it'd fit if you knocked down all the buildings between London Circuit and Allara St and built over the two blocks, that one and the pool. The owners of those buildings might be upset with that plan too!

OR... build it on Commonwealth Park!

They could certainly reclaim the Casino/Convention Centre block, build it there, pushing up into Glebe Park and linked with a bridge between buildings across the road to the current pool site. Deliver a brand new Stadium/Convention Centre/Casino complex. Constitution Ave can be closed on game day for foot traffic.

New Canberra Stadium decision needs to be made

It's a source of pride that a lot of talking goes on in Canberra. More often than not, it's about things that matter, and leads to enlightenment and resolution.

But sometimes - and famously - the talking goes around in circles and nothing ever comes of it.

It is a Canberra Times editorial about how the ACT Government needs to take a decision about building a new Canberra Stadium. And stop putting it off... and coming up with endless options. Good editorial.

If they don't bite the bullet and build somewhere near the city they are kidding themselves.

It's really not that hard. The Civic Pool location and adjoining car parks are just about big enough to construct the same size stadium as Bankwest. At worst they may have to narrow the stands at either end of the ground by a few metres, but they'd have enough room to stretch the sideline stands back a couple of metres to compensate.

It would possibly take a minor realignment of Parkes way (as you approach the Coranderrk St roundabout), to give you a bit of extra room at the southern end of the precinct. That's debatable though - with some slight modifications I'm sure you could fit a 30k capacity stadium on that site.

Stadium needs to be near restaurants etc. Doesn't have to be Civic. Woden, Belconnen even Tuggeranong would be ok. But not Epic. It's not like Olympic Park in Sydney where they have built entire entertainment precinct

Or Phillip District

I doubt cricket and AFL are going to give up the space they invested millions in

You can’t build on a creek at Turner.

The only thing near Phillip District is the hospital and the cemetery.

If they can build in a swamp, they can build on a creek

They managed to build skyscrapers over the Tank Stream in Sydney

Should a new Canberra stadium be at EPIC or Civic?

It has been more than a decade of ideas, achitects, talks and ... more ideas. Canberra sports fans just want to see the plans and some action.

The winner? It has to be Civic. Yes it has its complications and it will be expensive, but it makes so much sense. Transport, food, drink and location? Tick, tick, tick and tick.

It's a good article.

Civic is the best option on paper, and the option most would consider in line with other major cities - world wide.

The EPIC version could work, BUT, and it's a really big BUT. It couldn't be a staged entertainment/ eating precinct. It would need to be done all at once. Meaning a 2-3yr completion for the entire area. Even if they do that, getting the design of that right is very tricky. Creating an atmosphere from scratch isn't easy, but it is doable.

Subscriber article so not for me.

I don't know who came up with the Epic idea but it's dumb. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

It's shifting the problem from a poor location to another poor location. It's not central. It will create a different transport bottleneck. There is nothing there. There is less chance of attendance spontaneously - nobody is just going to wander past the stadium and say 'oh there is a game on, let's go'. There are no pubs, clubs or restaurants. It is dumb.

EPIC is an even worse location than Bruce... by a long way. The traffic is always terrible when there is an event there. The road network just won't support a stadium there. If they expect people to catch the tram... the problem is it doesn't serve the vast bulk of the population of the city.

And it is in the middle of nowhere. We were told that we need to move from Bruce so we could put the stadium in Civic in the midst of restaurants, cafes and bars. We should just keep it at Bruce, if we're not getting that.

I've said this many times before, but as an out-of-towner who has been to PLENTY of games in Canberra over the years... it really needs to be in Civic.

The game-day experience would be enhanced by a thousand percent if you could have a pre-game feed/beers in the city, walk to the stadium and then celebrate in the bars/restaurants in the city post-game without having to get on a bus or spill your beer in Fergus' new car.

I’m waiting for the announcement that it’s happening at EPIC, the outrage that follows and then ow the track the announcement that they’re just keeping it in Bruce and then everyone is relieved. Then kick the can down the road for the next decade.

It has to be in Civic, there’s no other answer. It has to be central, it has to improve the economy and the businesses in the city, that’s to be easily accessible and it has to be a world class venue.

EPIC would be a disaster for those of us in Tuggeranong.

Get it done.

Agreed, as a fellow person who lives in Tuggers, the thought of having to drive down Northbourne Ave is a nightmare at the best of times, let alone when a game would be on. If it was built in the city, I would definitely catch a bus/LR in, have a feed and a beer then head to the game. It's a no brainer.

As someone who lives in South Canberra, having to drive down Northbourne Avenue isn't the most appealing prospect. It'd be probably faster for me to drive up the Majura Parkway.
