Re: NRL ban Jack Wighton for 10 matches, impose $30,000 fine
The NRL should immediately change their decision to 12 games and 50k and tell the club to STFU or we'll keep increasing the penalty.
Shoving it in your face since 2017
Re: NRL ban Jack Wighton for 10 matches, impose $30,000 fine
if increased performance on simple tasks is a side effect our whole team should come up pregame...

Just to clarify, I was being sarcastic
Re: NRL ban Jack Wighton for 10 matches, impose $30,000 fine
Now would be the time to shut up and accept the punishment with ref controversy the focus of the news cycle..

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLRedRaider wrote: ↑July 20, 2018, 6:24 am I'm no doctor, but I think some facts from those who are in the profession are relevant. You be the judge.
Immediate effects
The effects of cocaine can last anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours, depending on how the cocaine is taken. When the immediate ‘rush’ of the cocaine has worn off, the person may experience a ‘crash’.
Low to moderate doses
Some of the effects that may be experienced after taking cocaine include:
immediate rush, feelings of euphoria
feelings of invincibility
a sense of wellbeing
increased talkativeness or quiet contemplation and rapture
increased confidence and a feeling of invincibility
feelings of great physical strength and mental capacity
increased libido
anxiety, agitation and panic
paranoia
upredictable violent/aggressive behaviour
feeling more awake, reduced need for sleep
increased performance on simple tasks
enlarged (dilated) pupils
dry mouth
increased breathing rate
increased blood pressure and heart rate (after initial slowing)
reduced appetite
increased body temperature
increased strength and energy
indifference to pain and localised pain relief.
Higher doses
A high dose of cocaine can cause a person to overdose. This means that a person has taken more cocaine than their body can cope with. Not knowing the strength or purity of the cocaine increases the risk of overdose. Injecting cocaine increases the risk of overdose due to large amounts of the drug entering the blood stream and quickly travelling to the brain.
Higher doses of cocaine can produce symptoms, including:
anxiety
sleep disorders
paranoia
tremors and muscle twitches
nausea and vomiting
rapid and weak pulse
chest pain
heart attack
kidney failure
hypothermia (low body temperature)
seizures
increased heart rate and body temperature
brain haemorrhage
stroke and convulsions.
Many of these can lead to coma and death.
High doses and frequent heavy use can also cause a 'cocaine psychosis', characterised by paranoid delusions, hallucinations and bizarre, agressive or violent behaviour. These symptoms usually disappear a few days after the person stops using cocaine.
Depending on how much is taken and the physical condition of the individual, alcohol can cause:
Slurred speech
Drowsiness
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Upset stomach
Headaches
Breathing difficulties
Distorted vision and hearing
Impaired judgment
Decreased perception and coordination
Unconsciousness
Anemia (loss of red blood cells)
Coma
Blackouts (memory lapses, where the drinker cannot remember events that occurred while under the influence)
LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL
Binge drinking and continued alcohol use in large amounts are associated with many health problems, including:
Unintentional injuries such as car crash, falls, burns, drowning
Intentional injuries such as firearm injuries, sexual assault, domestic violence
Increased on-the-job injuries and loss of productivity
Increased family problems, broken relationships
Alcohol poisoning
High blood pressure, stroke, and other heart-related diseases
Liver disease
Nerve damage
Sexual problems
Permanent damage to the brain
Vitamin B1 deficiency, which can lead to a disorder characterized by amnesia, apathy and disorientation
Ulcers
Gastritis (inflammation of stomach walls)
Malnutrition
Cancer of the mouth and throat

Nobodies arguing that abusing drugs isn't dangerous. But there are strong compelling arguments to legalise certain drugs.

NRL considering Canberra Raiders fullback Jack Wighton's appeal
The NRL expects to finalise Jack Wighton's punishment for the Canberra Raiders fullback's involvement in a late-night incident next week. It's believed it contained additional information not previously provided to the NRL integrity unit, challenging the premise his assaults in February were unprovoked.

I hope the NRL reduce the sanction and allow him the play this year. I would like to see him given a run in the halves.
NRL ban Jack Wighton for 10 matches, impose $30,000 fine
How does the NRL make their previous public statement about the punishment not meeting their expectations and then later admit they didn’t have all the evidence when they made their public claim.
I don’t think the Raiders board have managed the Wighton issue very well, but the NRL Commission has ‘once again’ displayed their unique level of ineptitude as a sports administration body.
Lucky the product is so good, because the administrators of rugby league are abysmal.

Canberra Raiders Jack Wighton appeal over ban for assault rejected by NRL
Jack Wighton will not be allowed to return this season unless Canberra make an unlikely charge to the finals after the NRL rejected his appeal over a 10-match ban for his nightclub assault earlier this season.
The NRL on Friday announced the proposed penalty previously imposed on Canberra fullback Jack Wighton for his involvement in a pre-season incident would stand.

NRL media statement on Jack Wighton:
The NRL today said the proposed penalty previously imposed on Canberra fullback Jack Wighton for his involvement in a pre-season incident will stand.
Wighton was suspended for 10 weeks and fined $30,000 after pleading guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court to five counts of assault and one of public urination.
He responded to the breach notice and sought a reduction in the penalty.
A spokesman said that, after considering the response, the NRL had determined that the original proposed penalty should stand.

NRL upheld the 10 week ban. Interesting to see if Raiders cop it this time or continue with the worlds biggest sulk...

Good
The club needs to let this go and move on, they’re incredible lucky the ban is only 10 weeks

Re: NRL ban Jack Wighton for 10 matches, impose $30,000 fine
The club went too soft on this decision, based on what information is available. And the Raiders board has to accept you're only as good as your last decision. There's no credit for getting it right before... and getting it wrong this time. The Raiders really would do well to cop the decision on the chin, as it looks like a fair call.

Yep time to move on. Happy enough with this now.
Let’s hope the NRL are ‘now consistent’ with their application of suspensions due to off field misdemeanours.
Plenty of NRL players have got into fights with the public outside bars, but clubs and supportive media organisations have been able to keep it quiet through various above and below board efforts.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

He got a suspension more or less on par with a player who had a lewd video but faced no criminal charges.
If you can’t join the **** dots on this one, then shame on you.

If we make another huge scene over this I hope the NRL gives him 15 weeks.

Please limit your comments to what is on the public record, which can be backed by a news link.
We've all heard a lot of things... but given sentencing is on foot, we need to restrict to the facts so far publicly recorded.

Re: NRL ban Jack Wighton for 10 matches, impose $30,000 fine
The raiders got this very wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if it does increase after he is sentenced. Even if it was his first offence, what he has reportedly done was disgusting and a club with the values that I'd like to be associated with would have terminated him.
Re: NRL ban Jack Wighton for 10 matches, impose $30,000 fine
Now that the Raiders have gone through the motions of an appeal to support the player, perhaps they will be smart enough to let this go. Every time they open their mouths it hits the media, again, and so Jack and his family are again under pressure. The next round of angst will come soon enough when the Court decision comes. From the moment the guilty plea was made the Raiders needed to shut up and let the process take its course.

Fact comes from people who are associated with him, and I want him sacked and banned for a long time. Absolute Meathead he is... I was standing by keeping him until I found out what he did last night. EDIT

Let me clear my throat here...
JACK WIGHTON PLEAD GUILTY
JACK WIGHTON OFFERED UP NO DEFENCE BECAUSE IN HIS OWN WORDS, HE DOES NOT REMEMBER ANYTHING FROM THAT NIGHT
This is not one man’s word against another. It’s several men’s word, with enough evidence to place charges against a man who offered no defence and in a court of law admitted to comitting the offences
What’s concerning is segments of this fan bases willingness to defend the guy because the colour of the jersey he pulls on 24 weekends in a 52 week calendar year
Re: NRL ban Jack Wighton for 10 matches, impose $30,000 fine
Are you for real?? Do you think if a star player from any sydney NRL club rolled blind drunk out of star and randomly assaulted 5 people it wouldn't have been reported in the media?
I'd love to know why the Canberra Times sports department didn't think that this was worth reporting at the time due to the obvious fact that it would have major implications on our season.
Re: NRL ban Jack Wighton for 10 matches, impose $30,000 fine
Exactly piggy. Furthermore the club and his legal team initially plead not guilty, then they see the CCTV footage and not only did they change their plea but they applied (and won) to have the CCTV footage supressed.
