2018 Rd 5 V Bulldogs: Teams and Previews

Canberra Raiders V Canterbury Bulldogs
Thursday 5 April 7:50pm
Canberra Stadium
Tickets: Click here
TV coverage: Nine, Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, 2CC, Mix 106.3

It is hard to imagine a worse start to the season for the Canberra Raiders. They have now lost their four opening matches. They lost the first three matches in the last five minutes, by two points or less. But it got even worse in Round 4, when the Sea Eagles scored at will in the first half... and it was all over at the break. There is a short turnaround to the next game, against the Bulldogs at Canberra Stadium. Could this be the week the Raiders get that desperately needed win?

Who do you think should line up for the Green Machine? Tell us your team here and see how you go in comparison to the official squad when announced. We will include the official line ups in the first post of this thread as soon as they're available.

Same team that beat the Tigers
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

14. Hingano
15. Lui
16. Soliola
17. Knight

Take all responsibility away from Austin and move to fullback, let Austin rome and follow the forwards in support and hit holes in broken play. Havili needs to play 60 mins straight up. If he can’t bring Garvey in. Sezar needs to take control of the team. Could easily swap Soliola and Papalii around if needed.

When we signed Lui I never thought I'd be sitting here saying that the guy has to be in the team.

You can be sure that Stuart will name the same team with players in their same positions more or less.
Stuart will only drop someone if there is an injury, he will continue to chop and change our halves and hookers.

We have the players to be a top 4 team but I believe Stuart just can not take this team to the next level, tactically Stuart is bad his bench management is also bad. The fact that last year and this year he yet again failed to make any players accountable for their actions. I honestly believe it’s at the point where the team needs a fresh new approach by a new coach. What’s even worse is the fact we have so many players off contract at seasons end the list is huge.

Doesn’t sound like the coach will make any changes.... This is what I’d do

1. Abbey
2. Cotric
3. Croker
4. Wighton
5. Rapana
6. Sezer
7. Hingano
8. Knight *
9. Havili
10. Paulo
11. Tapine
12. Whitehead
13. Soliola

14. Garvey
15. Going *
16. Boyd
17. Papalii

*Watching Nsw cup, these two were very impressive. Knight played massive minutes at prop in warm conditions. Going showed great leg drive and power post contact.

I thought Wighton was good a fullback but he is a better centre. Abbey is a genuine 1.

I’ll have one of these too please. With a finals season still deeply improbable I’d leave Wighton at fullback. Also as reward for a guy clearly putting in, as an example to others.

After the season is lowered into the ground I’d start auditioning new fullbacks and getting Jack back used to centre or 5/8 again Image

Agree that Paulo and Papalii should be on notice. Is there any mail on Papalii having agreed to terms elsewhere? Playing like a man already checked out, not playing for a contract.

if Raiders played like they did against Manly Klemmer, Woods as bad as they are, will look $1m fowards, I mean seriously ok Marty Tupau caused damage but raiders made Fonua-Blake looked like tamololo x20.

ok so, changes had been made but it backfired.

1. you know its gonna be WIGHTON for the rest of the year, unless injured.
2. wasting his talent on the wing is COTRIC
3. the most boring player in our team, showing no leadership this year is CROKER *
4. the dumbest player that knows he will never get dumped LEILUA *
5. trys every week but can be dumb sometimes and prob wasting his talent on the wing is RAPANA
6. we have no choice but to stick with what worked AUSTIN and he will be back this week *
7. we have no choice but to stick with what worked SEZER *
8. he is not a prop but will be named there is SOLIOLA
9. plays with heart but I still think he will be more effective off the bench as impact is HAVILII
10. only when Raiders are winning and have momentum BOYD looks damaging, but has never been effective or a spark when Raiders are flat
11. either hasnt hit his best or has already lost it, wont be playing rep footy in other words is PAPALII
12. trys and is deadly when Raiders on a roll is TAPINE
13. he has errors and silly penalities in him but would be in my team everyday WHITEHEAD

14. well it has to be GARVEY or HINGANO (poor bloke couldnt really show much with that pathetic effort by his team)
15. he isnt effective imo but LUI over Bateman anyday
16. another name you will never see dropped PAULO
17. it wont be this guy but I just wanna see MAKATOA play a game

* there is something going on inside the club with these players, even if rumors are squashed I still think Austin/sezer will not be with Raiders in 2019, I think Croker is having problems with Stuart, Leilua is not intrested and is just collecting paychecks, he might leave aswell and might lure Rapana too.

dogs are likely to be without Moses Mbye who usually destroys raiders, dogs are playing soo bad too, even as bad as we played against manly (which will be a good kick in the butt) I am sure Raiders will win this game, I mean cmon..........round 5 and the season is on the line.

After that press conference last night, I feel that the coach's job is on the line here. Another pitiful effort will show that the players don't want to play for him any more.
He might stay as coach for a while, but if they can't respond with a big effort, he's done.

1. Whighton - actually playing very well, and his backline involvement both sides of the ruck are creating points.
2. Abbey/Olfield - take your pick
3. Croker - Sticky won't move him yet
4. Cotric - clearly putting in, promoted to centres
5. Rapana - hopefully removing BJ will bring his attitude into line
6. Hingano - deserves a chance as a half.
7. Sezer - still looks lost in attack, but is less of a liability ATM than Williams/Austin
8. Boyd - give him angry pills
9. Havili - he finally got more minutes and the ruck looks so much better with him there.
10. Sia - just needs to simplify his game
11. Tarpine - will be better for the run
12. Whitehead - solidify a new combo on the eg edge with Cotric
13. Lui - Deserves a starting role based on efforts.

14. Garvey - his performances are screaming for a chance, we need a hooker to replace a hooker in the rotation.
15. Paulo - gets strict instruction that if he spends the night backing into the line, he will spend the next week at Mounties.
16. Papalli - is not playing to standard and needs the message sent. Can rotate into the edge and push Whitehead to lock after 30.
17. Knight - played big minutes at Mounties. NEEDS MORE THAN 10 MINUTES!

BJ, Austin, Williams, Bateman can spend the week in Mounties.

Murchie and either Abbey/Olfield can sit in as 18/19 until Mounties play.
