Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors

TV coverage: Fox League live Channel 502
Radio: ABC, 2CC, Mix 106.3
The Canberra Raiders have opened with two disheartening, last gasp, narrow losses to lowly rated teams from 2017. The Raiders looked very good at times with the ball, but the defence was far too often poor against the Knights. Now the Raiders face another improving team, the Warriors, in Round 3 at home. Who do you think should line up for the Green Machine? Tell us your team here and see how you go in comparison to the official squad when announced. We will include the official line ups in the first post of this thread as soon as they're available.

- We can’t have 2 halves who can’t tackle so Williams gets the punt. Sezer better at hooker this week but better for cohesion to have a hooker on the bench
- Thought of Abbey to FB and Jack to center but at a minimum Jack has been ok with kick return meters
- Guler looked good in the Reggies last week but I don’t believe he can play this year, so gotta keep Bateman in
- Think Whitehead is a better edge defender than others so have him there instead of Soliola

Cotric to right centre, Oldfield on the wing
Hunt for Bateman
Garvey for Sezer
If the Warriors play the way they have for the past two weeks we're gonna belted.

17. Gubb/ Makatoa (depending on Gubbs groin)
I was highly critical of Lui last week and said he shouldn’t be in the team. He did enough tonight to earn another week. I’m still not sold though.
Austin’s running game was great. Sezer is no good at hooker. Need his defence on an edge. I know Sammy kicked a 40/20 and set up the first whitehead try but he’s a liability on defence. So is Austin, I know, but I’d rather only have 1 of them out there than 2.
The last try that the knights scored, Jack just stood at the ruck, never even attempted to slide over and prevent the try. That’s a fullback’s job. Back to centre with you. Let’s see what Cotric can do out back. I also liked the look of Abbey in the trial.
Havili was a machine when he came on to play lock. Garvey to take the reins at hooker when he comes on and Havili to lock at some point.
Bateman does nothing but tackle. Sure that’s valuable but it doesn’t seem to be stopping any points since we’re woeful in defence. I’d rather someone who can make post contact metres as well as tackle in the middle rather than just wind up and look like he’s gonna make metres but then get flattened. Mounties for you.
Boyd was a monster again. Why he was kept for the last 12 minutes of the 2nd half is madness. Get it together Ricky.
Also. Learn to defend a set on our goal line. Just one would be a good start.
A forced goal line dropout would also be a nice addition Stick.

Re: 2018 Rd 3 V Warriors: Teams and Previews
Clearly the three halves strategy is not working. Pick your best halves and stick with them. Garvey has to come in, based on the performances this weekend. Bateman is offering no impact and time for a Mounties forward to come up.
The team is putting in effort certainly, but they are not putting in NRL standard performances. Tonight, I feel there is little hope for the season, with this line up. There have to be team changes. I can't remember feeling so disconsoltate, so frustrated, so without hope as a supporter for a long time.
Can we have some players who can defend? Some of the tries conceded tonight were embarrassing.

I would play Hingano against the Warriors, maybe he can sniff out an intercept like Hunt did against the donkeys!! He would know their calls

Re: 2018 Rd 3 V Warriors: Teams and Previews
This team has the meantality of a child their confidence has been down but after these 2 games they must be bone dry on any confidence.
Stuart will name the same team again bar injuries.
Warriors are far more composed and mature they’ll win by 1-12 points easy.
If the Raiders could defend esp their goal line they’d be a top 4 side but unfortunately they don’t seem to get it our defence is paper thin. Stuart is at al loss as what to do. There seems to be no changes whatsoever compared to 2017. Here we go again...........
Raiders need a better tactical and game management coach someone like M Maguire.
Stuart’s had his run.

Re: 2018 Rd 3 V Warriors: Teams and Previews
I totally agree with you but Stuart will name the exact same team bar injuries and he will continue to confuse our players with the chopping and changing of our halves and hookers. Our forwards wear a different number every week. No consistency and no accountabilitygreeneyed wrote: ↑March 18, 2018, 10:59 pm Clearly the three halves strategy is not working. Re: 2018 Rd 3 V Warriors: Teams and Previews
Cotric into the centres is something I'm looking forward to.
If he performs, leave him there and bring Joey back at left centre.
Williams and Austin to stay in the halves for mine.
I think we've got a good side that's capable of delivering plenty of wins.

Unfortunately we have too many players that need hiding on the wing. Williams and Croker are complete liabilities in defence and neither are good enough 1 on 1. Williams needs to be dropped, Sezer back to half. Our best defensive side would include Croker on the wing and Wighton and Cotric in the centres.CJR wrote: ↑March 19, 2018, 5:37 am Hide Croker on the wing please

Cotric
Croker
Wighton
Rapana
Austin
Sezer
Soliola
Whitehead
Papalii
Boyd
Havili
Lui
Bench: Garvey, Bateman, Paulo, Hunt/Knight/Makatoa
Wighton is our best defensive back and our right side needs some urgent help in this area. Time for Sezer to come back in the halves at Williams expense. Garvey and Havili to share the 9 role. Hopefully Whitehead and Cotric come through the week OK.
I would actually look forward to seeing Wighton at right centre and what Abbey can do at the back.

Have a look at the replays. You will find both tries down our left side were from Austin's misreads.gergreg wrote: ↑March 19, 2018, 6:26 amUnfortunately we have too many players that need hiding on the wing. Austin was great for the Tigers when he filled in at fullback from memory.
Re: 2018 Rd 3 V Warriors: Teams and Previews
Do we know the mysterious players 29 and 30 yet? Guler was already promoted to start for Mounties, so I would think he may be on his way to first grade some time this year.

Did Guler play for Mounties this week ? Id be interested to see how he goes, especially if Paulo is suspended.
Edit, just checked Mounties thread, promoted to start, hope he played well

Re: 2018 Rd 3 V Warriors: Teams and Previews
If he names Whitehead in the centres and a half on the bench again I will be ropeable. Why sign depth players if you never intend to use them?
I also would not have Wighton at fullback. But I've come to accept he'll be playing there until the heat death of the universe:
1-Wighton
2-Oldfield
3-Croker
4-Cotric
5-Rapana
6-Sezer
7-Williams
8-Paulo
9-Havili
10-Gubb
11-Papalli
12-Soliola
13-Whitehead
14-Garvey
15-Boyd
16-Murchie
17-Lui
I would strongly consider the Austin at #1 and Wighton at #4 option, or also consider giving Abbey a crack. Papalli is on thin ice at this point, and would consider benching him when Tapine is fit. Bateman is going to get picked which makes me sad, he really is barely of NSW Cup standard.

Oldfield has been playing centres for Mounties. Will just be a straight swap for BJ. That'll be the only change. You watch.

Re: 2018 Rd 3 V Warriors: Teams and Previews
I wont rule out Ricky playing Whitehead at centre, however, with our forward depth being tested by Tapine, and likely Gubb, out injured, I dont think he has the luxury of doing so.
There are other more drastic options, like Wighton to centre with Austin, Rapana, Cotric or even Abbey to fullback, however, you dont mess with your spine, and Ricky has already passed on these options in the previous two years.
So, this is his chance to give Cotric a run at centre. It will be on the right which is where he played in u20s too. He will be playing next to the guy he modelled his wing play on in Rapana too. So I think this is a win-win situation for everyone.
So, who comes onto the left wing? Probably Oldfield or Abbey. Oldfield was injured preseason, so not sure if he is fit yet, but I think he is 1st cab off the rank. Abbey played a lot of wing in the preseason games, though he is really a fullback. Abbey was named on the extended bench in Rd 1, but Oldfield was last week.
Raiders do have a few 'left field options' too. Mikaele Ravalawa is the u20s Fijian flyer that was impressive late last yr, but is probably too raw. They have Seb Kris, who was another big centre type in u20s last yr. I thought Siticeni Moceidreke was also in the Raiders squad, but can only find him on the Mounties page. He was the Fijian flyer we picked up from the Bunnies. I thought he looked pretty good in his couple of games last yr, very fast and quick on his feet.
As for who replaces Gubb?!?! That's anyone's guess. Hunt has been on the extended bench both weeks. Murchie was named last week. These are the two more likely straight up swaps.
However, I'm going to throw out an option that I think Ricky has only just thought of last night...
9. Garvey
13. Havili
14. Sezer
Therefore, Garvey in for Gubb.

Sleek, your thoughtful and measured comments have no place here. Please try to include more chaos and calamity in future posts.Sleek the Elite wrote: ↑March 19, 2018, 3:03 am Cotric into the centres is something I'm looking forward to.
If he performs, leave him there and bring Joey back at left centre.
Williams and Austin to stay in the halves for mine.
I think we've got a good side that's capable of delivering plenty of wins.

Re: 2018 Rd 3 V Warriors: Teams and Previews
Assuming Whitehead is fit, I expect him to be named at centre for BJ.
Croker is getting smashed these days and I'd prefer to see him at fullback where he can read and direct the team in defence. We know he can jump and catch because of the tries he's scored that way. Wighton to centre where he can use his body mass to effect.
Time to put a rocket up Papa. He comes back from rep duties overweight and makes dumb mistakes during games. I'd have him on the bench and see how he responds.

10. Makatoa (though knowing Ricky, even if he did name him in the starting side, he'd make a last-minute change and bring Papa back in <sigh>).
11. Soliola
12. Lui
13. Bateman (let's face it, we're stuck with him until he's injured).
14. Sezer
15. Paulo
16. Papalii
17. Gubb if he's fit, Hunt if he's not.

Oldfield is fit, played Round 1 for Mounties and was 18th man for Round 2. Moceidreke is Mounties contracted, I believe.
